Rafa Benitez is very successful at what he does and being a workaholic helps.
So when the boss was asked what he has been doing over the summer he had a very simple answer – working,
And working hard most of the time from his beautiful home in the Wirral with his family – and 3 dogs.
It’s got to be difficult for Rafa to be away from his family so much during the season but he has put roots down in Liverpool and it’s a short trip from Newcastle to get there on the train.

Even quicker by helicopter.
Rafa has talked about the summer window and that the club knew that Mikel Merino would be leaving this summer.
Here’s some of what he said when interviewed on nufcTV:
“As I normally do, working.”
“I was in England, in Liverpool. I went to visit my family, a weekend in Spain.”
“But the rest of the time in Liverpool, working, working hard, trying to do the same in this difficult transfer window, to work hard and do our best.”
“To be fair, we knew about the interest of Spanish teams in Mikel Merino, and his release clause, so we were trying to be sure we had an option.”
“A player like Ki, a player with quality, with experience in the Premier League,”
“We will be looking to bring out the best in him.”
Rafa is not one to dwell on things so it does seem that Ki Sung-yueng is a direct replacement for Mikel Merino and he has a lot more experience.
Ki’s also played over 130 games in the Premier League for Swansea over the last five years.
And it’s a tough transfer window for Newcastle – but we already knew that.
The key is to somehow get our targets through the door.
And to do that we must be aggressive and move quickly when that’s required.
We still feel fairly confident that we can have a good transfer window – but Mike Ashley has to help Rafa.
