Our Players Do England Proud With Brilliant World Cup Performance

I remember back in 1966 when my Dad and I were ready to toast England’s victory over West Germany in the World Cup final at Wembley.

We had already poured the vodkas at our Chapel House residence and were all ready to toast England’s success with our boys ahead 2-1.

So exciting.

And then Wolfgang Weber equalized in the 89th minute.

What – hey – it was a handball ref!!

It took two more goals from Geoff Hurst in extra time to make it 4-2 for England and our first World Cup win.

Kieran Trippier scores after 5 minutes

And with England doing so well this year in Russia it looked possible we could win another one.

It was a real pity last night that England were beaten 2-1 by Croatia after extra time.

A great goal from the excellent Kieran Tripper after just 5 minutes put us on track.

But mid-way through the second half England seemed to lack concentration.

Croatia came at us, and we let in a really poor equalizer and then a goal in extra time was it – again a lack of concentration at the back.

Croatia seemed to have so much space on their right wing.

To a large extent, it was a lack of experience of this young England side that finally did us in – but they did fabulously well in Russia.

They will get a hero’s welcome when they return to England and will deserve it.

These new players have put England back on the football map again, and they can only get better and more experienced too.

Things look good for England for the future.

Unexpected but great displays from our England team and the players showed strong mental strength and courage in games too.

And new heroes in the team like Jordan Pickford, Kieran Trippier, and Harry Maguire – to name just three.

They have minimal International experience, but that will change.

Well done lads – you made us all proud!!!

Did Delli Alli ever take more than one or two touches?
Did Harry Kane have more goals than shots on target?
Did Southgate realise they were out flanking us and he had to make changes?

Anyway back to the real thing soon enough!

Roller coast ride for England, sadly ended v Croatia, but the best ride us fans have had for many a year.
Usual suspects coming out with their expected negatives now that it’s all over, but f##k ‘em I say.
Anyone who thinks this is the last run we’ll have for another twenty eight years will be mistaken.
We have a team which will improve and we’ll be contenders for the big prizes for some time to come.

BREAKING: Fulham have signed Jean Michaël Seri from Nice for a deal worth £25 million. These are not bigger clubs with bigger budgets, just clubs with far bigger ambitions.

From my point of view (being Irish) any “hatred” (I think that’s a bit strong) for the English football teams come mainly from the hype in the English media and the footy hooligans rather than the 800 years of oppression!

I think this world cup because media hadn’t been coming out with the usual England are going to win this, before a ball has been kicked, the Irish had really softened any dislike towards your national team.

We’re looking forward to future competitive games against our neighbours too. Since Ireland beat England in ’88 the two sides have been inseparable in games even with the gulf in class of squads

No info on whether the move will be made permanent at the end of the season or not.

Does it depend on Rafas future?

    Questions questions.

It’s a bit rich having a pop at us for a minority of football hooligans given that a minority of your population had a thing for explosives!

I think another net spend as low as last years with the club dithering over Rafa’s first choices will confirm that this is his last season here.

Not having a pop, it was just an explanation as to where the dislike towards the national team is coming from. I should clarify that the hooligans is reference to the 90’s and not recent.
I certainly don’t want to get into the politics of it! I’ve lived in the UK for 6 years so I’ve nothing against anyone there

barkel – there is a “sliding scale” with words like love/like/hate – which individuals can choose their level. But there are a full spectrum of views dependent on who holds them.

The English football hooligans are/were a disgrace and brought shame upon the nation. I acknowledge the distinct difference with Irish fans who seemed to have no such thoughts of causing trouble.

It may be some time before England play some of their nearest neighbours but I will be doing a cockerell strut and crowing loudly when we twang your jackies, good and proper!

I’ve a lot of Irish friends and have spent a bit of time in Dublin, the hooligans really were a blot on footballing history, they very nearly ruined the game here and it’s such a shame it took what happened at Hillsborough to get something done about it, despite that not even being caused by hooliganism. Like I said to belbunnen mag, I wouldn’t hold it against any Irishman for supporting the opposition given our histories, it’s just that Munster’s slyness gets up my nose.

I’m obviously gutted for England but I think the most entertaining team went out too early.

    That being Japan.

They were awesome to watch and extremely polite during the tournament. They even cleaned up after themselves after they were knocked out by Belgium. Nothing but respect for them.

Strikes me that Mitro has been very quiet since his outburst demanding a move to Fulham. It’s been weeks and you’d think his agent would be forcing the issue.

I think that particular deal is already done, just needs signing off.

Also, Southgate was massively found out.

We needed to change something in the second half because Croatia were completely negating any build up play that we had by tracking Lingard and Alli’s runs whilst pushing up against our defenders resulting in constant hoofball. We needed to close down the crosses earlier too but our formation was being badly exploited by Croatia switching the play, especially to there right.

Fair play to Croatia, they did there homework and located our weak spots and Southgate just seemingly wasn’t prepared for that. (shows his inexperience as a manager?)

We scraped through into extra time but we definitely didn’t deserve the win overall.

Could have been out of sight in the first half and that is the gutting thing.

Proud of the team for our first semi final in 28 years, but I do think the easy route papered over the cracks when it comes to plan A England.

Luckily it seems we have a great future ahead of us with the u17s winning there world cup, the u20s winning there’s and then the u21s winning the Toulon tournament. It’s a very good place holder regardless of the fact that it was an easy route. Something to build on and hopefully exciting times ahead. Southgate will have learned from this loss more then anyone.

What do you all think to Erik Lamela? I’ve seen a report suggesting if Spurs sign Malcom then we might turn our attention to him.

Could he be a better prospect than Andros? Only 2 goals, 2 assists in 25 games though!

Lamela in the number 10 role with Kenedy and Townsend alongside him with a fresh new ST up top?

    Mmmmmmmm. Lol.

That would be a brand new forward line. I feel like Perez is going to be important next season, hes technically very gifted when it comes to shooting. His decision making is the problem.

But he was our top scorer last season and seemed to play better when Kenedy was in the team.

In Italy he was a sublime little player but since we went to spurs he has had serious repair work carried out on his hip… I think he is a player that hasn’t reached his potential because of injuries, given spurs only sell for big money I’d hedge my bets that he’s too pricey and untested after serious injuries and given he was close to 30m from Roma they’ll be looking an astronomical fee. Similar scenario to ings but ings won’t carry the same sort of pricetag, Levy drives a very hard bargain for spurs players he’s selling!

If the Kennedy photo shoot was at SJP first thing then not too difficult to zip up to the airport and be in Ireland now.
No doubt someone (thanksJib) will check the flight times to check that feasibility.

Dubrovka,Ki and Kennedy in for say £5m and Merino our for £10m is good business in anyone’s books. Rather that than the West Spammers approach of seeing how much money then can burn for the sake of it.

Keep it up Charnley just the additional players and top strikers now to buy and a few to move on still. Know you can do it.

Ed, nice to have that fantastic memory of celebrating with your Father.

Lamela is definitely someone I think Raffa could improve for us.

What about a striker ? So far there’s only been one name mentioned that I feel could do a job for us (Abraham).

Has there been anyone else realistic and worthwhile mentioned ?

Lochinvar – you might have to wait while jib checks the bus times to the ferry and of course the ferry crossing times, then the buses to the camp venue.

England did us proud, but we ran out of steam, Harry Kane looked totally beat, that said looks like world cup top scorer so fair play but he tailed off badly, oh and Raheem Stirling six games and he did not produce one telling final ball in any game, Gareth me old son keeping faith is one thing but come on fella, young loftus cheek would have given us a different perspective and a better one imo.

    “Brilliant performance” ?
For first half an hour maybe.
When Croatia’s midfield started over-running Englands weaker midfield it was a matter of when not if Croatia would equalize
And Kane’s misses…..and Sterling’s falling down…..and Ratchford’s aimless running nowhere (but not in the box)
