One In – One Out – That’s What Football’s All About

We were sorry to see Mikel Merino leave the club yesterday – he’s a young player who looks like he has the skill to become an excellent player in the future.

But he didn’t want to stay at Newcastle so there’s not much Rafa or the club could do about it.

But just before Mikel left us there was news that Rafa had managed to get a season-long loan deal worked out for Brazilian winger Robert Kenedy – who was dazzling for us this year on loan.

At the same time Merino, after recovering from his back injury couldn’t get back into the side because of the great form of Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame – who was a revelation in the holding midfield position.

Ayoze has pointed out on his Twitter account that one friend has left the club but another is coming back – so it kinds of evens itself out.

But it also shows how footballers careers can be unpredictable and it’s often difficult to settle anywhere for any length of time.

We are hoping that Ayoze can improve further his goalscoring prowess next season.

Last season he was our top scorer with 10 goals – 8 scored in the Premier League – the most he’s ever scored in a Premier League season for us.

Kenedy scoring against the Saints

He is another player who has improved under the guidance of Rafa Benitez.

Howay The Lads!!

Be great if Mikey finally turned up to the face to face meeting with Rafa wearing a bright red shirt and Rafa stood up, charged to the other side of the room and headbutted him to death 😀

    Jail,

I get it, but unfortunately we are where we are. I would love Ashley to move on but until someone put’s us out of our misery we are stuck with him. I have learned to live with that. I personally wouldn’t swap either. Have them both, yes but I don’t think he is an upgrade, personally.

Problem in having both Ritchie and Townsend is simple ( nevermind cost and greater priorities) – neither would be happy at their age and career stage in being an occasional player . As well as Kenedy we have Atsu and Murphy for wing positions where would Rafa fit them all in?

are you making conspiracy theories to support what you think? isn’t it more likely Rafa is working with the owner and club officials. would Rafa allow himself to be railroaded like that?

I googled Yannick Toure and got this.

Swiss youngster Yannick Toure has signed a pre-contract deal with #nufc and will join this summer. He’s arrived this week to “get acclimatised” with his surroundings. [@Neilfarrington]

This is Summer so I assume he’s with us.

    Don’t think is new news!

I understand the frustration from fans that Townsend showed no loyalty to the club when we went down, But he was here for half a season..Was By far our best player and he has no affiliation with club like Nufc fans do.

We played palace at home last season and scraped a 1-0 win when palace were far the better side that day, But Townsend did plenty of tracking back that game, something he seems to be questioned on.Again it is all about preference mate and mine would edge towards Andros coming back, And if we could keep both that would be all the more sweeter

hate is a negative emotion. anyway we might buy some players before the window ends and then you will have wasted all that negative emotion unnecessarily. also many of the players other teams are buying that you are envious of aren’t great buys. Rafa may bide his time but he will probably hopefully get the right players. so worry not!

remember just because we haven’t bought as much as some teams isn’t necessarily because Ashley isn’t making the funds available, the chances are that Rafa is waiting for the right players.

Rafa has been interviewed in the Chronicle today and he talks about what it will take for Newcastle to compete in the Premier League next season:
“I think that the approach has to be the same as last year.” “It’s one game at a time.”
“We won’t put any targets on this game or another.” “For me, it is just to be sure we do the right things to compete.”
“But they (other clubs) have squads that are already strong anyway.” “We know what we need to do and we must try.”
“If we are strong enough we can compete in the table to finish in the middle of the table or higher.”
“But if we aren’t strong enough we will try to avoid relegation because every single team is spending some money.”

Say no more Jane really and I don’t see Rafa staying beyond this season do you if funds are not made available.
Then let us see what the Ashley apologists have to say then

No mate not at all but we are stood still and have not improved which is the worry. 4 week left is it ? 600 million spent and we have spent what 4 million on a player we knew was coming in anyway. Over the moon Kennedy has returned albeit on loan and the South Korean lad in to replace Merino.
So as you were captain ..No loss or improvement from the end of last season

Ritchie over Townsend for me. Yes Townsend had no affiliation to us but he should have stayed when we got relegated. He was banished to the reserves at Tottenham and fell out with pochetino and another coach there, nobody was going near him until we saved him. When we needed him he bailed at the first opportunity. No getting around the fact.

Yes he is faster and probably is the better player going forward but end product suggests it is much closer when Townsend past two seasons is 3goals 4 assists and then 2 goals 7 assists this season. Ritchie for us in the prem is 3 goals 5 assists. Consider that palace are more attacking in terms of letting their wingers have freedom and we only had gayle and Joselu up front.

What our main strengths last season was the fact that we were together, worked hard and constantly were told that the players here play for the club and the fans unlike previous players that got us relegated. Add to this that Ritchie dropped down to come to us. Furthermore, when he has spoken on his own or with lascelles I’ve always taken from that as Ritchie supporting lascelles as captain and acting as his no2. His work rate is infectious, chips in with important goals and vital for when we choose to press. Don’t think Townsend offers this except for important goals maybe. Townsend was good for us when we went down but we are different now in terms of style and personnel and want players that WANT to be here. Players like kenedy and dubravka. Recent comments by Townsend scream mercenary to me too.

Overall, it’s Ritchie for me. Although, if we have ambitions to play in the top 8 or higher is Ritchie the type of winger you need to start every week? Possibly not. Is Townsend that winger, I would say possibly not either. If Rafa wants that deal then fair enough but I don’t think Townsend over Ritchie is exactly an upgrade overall and would rather replace Ritchie with someone else than him.

Ideally would keep Ritchie and improve the squad that way but it doesn’t seem to be an option.

“One In – One Out – That’s What Football’s All About”

We have a bit more to do than that. We need to shift or fix up quite a few players. Sels, Colback, Saivet, Lazaar, Aarons, Mbemba, Mitro. Seven out, and four or five of real quality in. That’s a lot of business in a month, and you do need them out if you want proper upgrades. I’d happily see Ritchie, Gayle and Joselu shifted for better too. I don’t doubt the club is working hard on reshaping the group, but there is still a lot to do.

Difficult to say. We haven’t exactly strengthened but have pretty much the same team that ended last season other than ki over merino who hardly played since Christmas. I would say that we were one of the youngest squads so after a year in the premiership, we will have improved from the experience. Think this isn’t often neglected.

Perez for example has had a full year of being moulded to the no 10 role, kenedy will have a pre season and not sign for us after having hardly any game time. Lascelles and Lejuene have built up whatlooks to be a very promising partnership. We have dubravka from the start of the season. What I will say is our team starting the new season is much better than the one that started last season and that should hopefully count for something.

    Wow, what a day.

Ronaldo, agree with you on the fact the team now is better already than the one that started last season. It will take the right players to come in to improve the starting 11, not just any old rubbish or players with plenty of skill but not the right attitude.

I think to be balanced, you have to look at Townsend’s stats from the time he spent under Rafa in the Prem also, which you very carefully left out. He was a new signing in the January, starting cold in a new team struggling against relegation but managed 4 goals and 2 assists in just 13 games. Very respectable stats, considering the circumstances.

Rafa knows him inside out, trusts him and if he wants him, thinks he could improve the squad, which is easily good enough for me.

We have to trust that Rafa knows what he’s doing. His budget is obviously limited, for whatever reason. Someone mentioned earlier the FFP implications of wage bill increases, which is a point I’ve made before and could well be the major factor in our supposed one in one out policy.

Another possibility is that he wants to have a serious look at the likes of Arma, Murphy, Victor Fernandez and others in the squad environment in Ireland. If he deems them worthy of a place in the squad, he may think he can spend his budget elsewhere.

Certainly we don’t have to panic yet – we still have a month of the transfer window remaining.

As for Mitro, Mickey I know he’s on holiday but his team aren’t. They would be screaming blue murder at the moment if they thought he wasn’t getting his move. There’s no doubt at all that Fulham can afford him, though I’m not sure how they are bypassing FFP at the moment.

Remember when Mitro’s World Cup ended there was a story which came up about him going on strike if he wasn’t allowed his move? That story went away very quickly and hasn’t come back. Something changed at that moment but hasn’t yet been made public.

I have a feeling there is a lot going on behind the scenes and we’ll get to know about it in due course.

Finally, Rafa himself has been quick to let us know via the media when he hasn’t been happy. He hasn’t done that this window so far, just said ‘it’s been difficult, we’ll keep trying’. Platitudes, not protests.

When Rafa starts to get upset, that’s when I’ll get nervous. Or two days before the window closes and we haven’t signed anyone, but I don’t think it will come to that.

2nd finally – it just occurred to me that Kenedy must have had other offers, Ki Sung Yeung too. What persuaded them to come to us? Certainly Rafa is a draw, but under Ashley we haven’t been a leading wage payer and they could have presumably moved elsewhere for more money. Would they have come to us if they knew that we would be looking at another season battling relegation or have they been assured that other signings are inbound?

Everything at the club is on a need to know basis and at the minute, those outside of that don’t need to know. They’re keeping tight lipped with everything and rightly so after the takeover saga.

I predict our next signing will be………………….
