Newcastle have been linked with trying to sign Salomon Rondon since early June this year when we were told he had a relegation release clause of £16.5M in his contract.
Salmon has one year left on his contract and Newcastle cheekily tried to arrange a one-year loan deal.
But West Brom only want a sale this summer so they can get some money for him before he would become a free agent next summer.
This thing has been dragging on and on all summer, and it appears that Newcastle don’t have the £16.5M to buy him.
Dwight Gayle – wants to stay at Newcastle
So Rafa has been pushed into trying to do a swap deal involving Dwight Gayle, and one report is that agreement had been reached with Dwight and£3M going to West Brom for Rondon.
Ig that goes through we will not have added to our striker numbers although Rondon has done well in the Premier League these last three years.
The Birmingham Mail today are reporting the deal is not close:
“Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle is a target and could be involved in a deal that sees Salomon Rondon head in the opposite direction.”
“The Magpies have expressed an interest in signing Rondon on loan, but Albion will only let the Venezuelan leave in a permanent switch.”
“Talks are ongoing, but a deal is not thought to be close, contrary to some media reports.”
George Caulkin of the Times has also reported today the reason for the hold-up is not all that surprising – Dwight Gayle wants to stay at Newcastle and doesn’t want to move to West Brom and back into the Championship.
This is a tweet George put out in answer to a Newcastle fan asking what the situation was with the Rondon deal:
“As things stand, I don’t think Gayle wants to leave NUFC which is both fair enough and impressive in many ways.
“So that is delaying things.”
This is Newcastle’s summer saga – why does it always take Newcastle so long to sign a player?
They make it look so very complicated and difficult.
Comments welcome.

according to the Chronicle Rafa has told Gayle he doesn’t want to lose him, and that it’s his choice if goes or stays
bit of reverse psychology going on there i’m thinking

Comment #44Raul Albiol supposedly available for £5m. If rafa wanted an experienced cb who could step in for lascelles then this is perfect. Much better than the proposed Skrtel rumours start of summer. Not sure what his wages are like,

Comment #45Let’s not forget that Gayle was a key part of the Championship winning team and again an influence in last years performance. We saw a very bonded team under Lascalle’s leadership and loosing Gayle could be disruptive if he’s an integral part of the dressing room group. He has more to offer staying.

Comment #46Would love to see the Magpie Group sit down and make a proper plan, which they could then approach potential suitors with…Perhaps Staveley would come back with some armoury to oust the FCB!!!

Comment #48Maybe we should make a loan offer for Lucas Perez and he can play as a No. 10. Then loan out Woodman and Aarons to Bristol city in exchange for Bryan and £3 mil

Comment #49Gayle is an interesting dilemma. Last summer Colback was told he wasn’t part of his plans although still on a contract for 2 years.
Rafa didn’t send him to U23’s for disciplnary reasons just pragmatic ones as he wouldn’t be needed in training drills and could possibly have a detrimental (albeit not intentionally so) effect on squad. I believe when Rafa was short of players for first team training he called Colback in but he refused. Presumably knowing he had no way back he thought there was no point but it certainly meant that was then the case when he refused.
At present Gayle is presumably still in Rafa’s plans if an upgrade can’t be sourced. Would Rafa want to force issue by telling him he has no future?
Big gamble but unless Gayle ( or Ritchie for example) can be persuaded by a better club/offer – how likely is that? they will be content to stay under their contracts. Both will know that club have considered selling but that is often the case and players can be easily settled back into squad for the coming season. Some rankle though?

Comment #51Someone please correct me but in the last set of accounts, some people (kieran, the price of football guy, chris holt etc) say the high wage bill was attributed to include the wages of players like colback, saivet, lazaar etc over the remainder of their contract. If this was the case then it shouldnt really affect us if they are not moved on as they will not be in the squad and their wages have already been accounted for. It only really matters to the players if they want to play football.
This type of thing isn’t really my forte.

Yeah I appreciate the irony there. WB must be desperate to cut costs – such as wages – but Gayle is a proven Championship striker who could get 20 goals and spearhead a promotion push. He’d be a great bit of business as far as they’re concerned.
As Ronaldo (and others) have said, I’d be happy to keep Gayle for his work rate, movement and the improvements he seems to be making under Rafa. Would be good to sign an out-and-out CF as well though. Rondon is such a player, but there are large question marks over how good he’ll be – his goal scoring record of late is not good.
If the Rondon deal collapses, we can expect a flood of rumours regarding possible signings up front. I just hope Rafa is allowed to spend some money on another target – if we even have one – who can lead the line effectively next season. Having players like Gayle, Perez and Muto buzzing around a strong CF would give defences a right headache.

I think you are right about reverse psychology. If another strker comes in where would that leave Gayle in pecking order with Perez Joselou and Muto seemingly in his thinking.?

I really like how calm and measured your posts are. I agree that moving out another couple of players and making a couple of decent signings (LB & CF ideally imo) would make this window a relative success.
I also notice that many people seem to think that the HoF loan is being plucked from the pockets of the club – and that PL football teams are some sort of money-making wonder machines – which I disagree with. As Nezza & Magscar have pointed out, Ashley is a billionaire with many businesses and assets – as the HoF article served to highlight – so he has money avasble to sanction a loan that isn’t strictly ‘nufc momey’. That said, I don’t profess to fully understand the fiscal complexities of multi-million pound businesses, or their owners, and I never will. I’m in the dark – just like everyone – as to why we don’t have more money available and it frustrates me. But the HoF thing is surely incidental – I see no point in banging our collective drums about that.
I think the thing that most disappoints and angers me, and probably many others, is that we have a golden opportunity to make progesss here – how often does a club like us have a world class manager like Rafa? Ashley’s lack of ambition as the owner of a football club is a constant barrier to us improving, and a perennial source of irrigation for the fans. I genuinely believe that he didn’t really know what he was doing when he bought the club. And probably now regrets it. Didn’t he even say that much?
That – and the lies and moments of crass idiocy that have haunted his tenure (Joe Kinnear, first and foremost) is what drives a wedge beyeeen Ashley and the fans.
Losing Rafa because of Ashley’s lack of ambition will be the greatest upset of all. God only knows who we’d end up with after that.

Comment #58NUST recently did an interview with True Faith, which is on the post Porto match Podcast.
I got the impression they are more interested in achieving a proportion of fan ownership in the club, reflecting the policy of the Trusts of other PL clubs. He also expressed that they shy away from being on social media and i extrapulated that that meant fan protests.
