Rafa has wanted to sing Salomon Rondon for months, and he has finally arrived this afternoon on loan for the season with no option to buy.
Dwight Gayle joined West Brom a couple of hours earlier than Rondon was announced, and again there is no option to buy in his loan contract either.
Salomon’s four-year contract runs out next summer, but West Brom have a one year option which we assume they will take up.
Salomon Rondon – happy to be at Newcastle
Salmon has been interviewed by nufcTV in his very first interview, and this is some of what he had to say on arriving at Newcastle:
“I am very passionate and happy to be here. I can’t wait to get started and meet my new team-mates now.”
“The clubs were talking for a long time but now it is done I can focus on the season. I want to help my team-mates to do well and get the points this season. I’m just happy to be here.”
“It’s a big opportunity for me to come here. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. The manager too, I understand his targets and was happy to come and play for him.”
“It is a great pleasure for me to wear the number nine because I know its history in this club.”
“A lot of star strikers played here like Alan Shearer and Tino Asprilla. You just say the name Shearer and everyone knows who he is, how good he was and how much he did for this club.”
“And Asprilla is a South American player – he’s Colombian – so we know a lot of the South American players over there.”
“I am Venezuelan and I am now here and I want to make history with this club.”
“For me, I am a striker and so my mentality is that I always have to play with the number nine. “
If Rondon plays well this season the danger for Newcastle with no option to buy in his loan contract is that West Brom could ask a hefty fee for him after Rafa has made him into a better player.
Anyway – that’s in the future – we are delighted to have him on loan for the coming season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #87I really hope Rondon proves a good-natured brute, who runs around battering defenders. I think he might be.

Comment #91Lochinavar – ‘has Charnley thought about that…” What a question. How could you doubt our excellent – what ever he does – has he not brought us in a load of top players this window?
In other words – it would be a miracle if the arse had the ability to think!

Comment #93This very brave of you all making your martoon predictions before the window shuts. What if we sign Messi? What if Shelvey or Lascelles leaves? I know those are extremes but we could still bring in/ lose players.
Thus, I shall wait until Friday to make my predictions.

Comment #98I think West Bromwich have got themselves a cracking deal. They’ve just bagged a prolific championship striker on loan and we’re paying them two million quid for the privilege. Look at the fees bandied around for Bamford, Vydra, Adobe etc. They must be pissing themselves.

Comment #99Going on the extra year scenario that west Brom have with Rondon, it usually has a trigger status that kicks in after ‘x’ amount of games and I would have thought the player would have some say in it too?
Anyone know any of the intricacies with this as it could get complicated and effect the players demands should we wish to take him AND have to pay a fee, hopefully one of you gentlemen (and/or ladies) could shed some light?

Comment #101Jane – It was Joselu with 5 goals actually – everyone is entitled to their opinion
Lascelles – cheers – it’s not too bad I have perfected the spreadsheet from doing it previous years.
SredniVashtar – Very wise however I will allow people to change if they want to before Saturday – so should I put you down for Messi as TGS?

Comment #102I think we’ve had our pants pulled down because we can’t afford anyone else to be honest. There’s still not enough goals in the current squad at all in my opinion.
And how annoying is Manxpie going to be when Mitrovic scores more than Rondon? Meh!

Comment #108I would take Markovic for 6m – I’ve always rated him and thought he didn’t get enough of a chance at Liverpool. Markovic on the right, Kenedy on the left, Muto and Rondon through the middle……doesn’t sound too bad to be honest!

Comment #117Here’s my positive spin on Rondon in and Gayle out…
We sacrifice a little pace for a lot of strength with this swap and giving the pace we have our wide I think we won’t miss the little bit of pace up front and will massively benefit from a mobile, hard working presence as a result. I like Gayle but now we can have options on the counter attack by swinging balls into a ballsy forward (which is Joselus’s real downfall imo) as well as cutting in from wide with the interchanging of the wingers from traditional to inverted. With Gayle we played it inside too often as he was too weak in the air for what we needed for crosses and it broke down more often than not and becomes predictable. Now we have a player who is quite quick for a big lad and very strong, the ball stays up more and we become dangerous inside and out… He is our new Demba Ba I hope.
I was also thinking that on the second season up last time we finished 5th without spending that much but bringing in players required. After that season we pretty much bought tosh in France hoping for big profits again but never really worked out so the necessities that were actually needed didn’t get bought because the focus was to buy cheap and sell for profit (that worked really well lol)
