Newcastle Fans Have Their Say On This Summer’s Transfer Window

Forget about the money Rafa was not allowed to spend – that’s all Ashley’s doing – and he will drive Rafa out of the club.

But for £22M the players Rafa brought into the club we think are very good.

Dubravka and Kenedy were Newcastle stars this year in the second half of the season.

Salomon Rondon and Yoshinori Muto replace Aleksandar Mitrovic (who Rafa never played) and Dwight Gayle and that has to be an upgrade.

Kenedy listens to points Rafa Benitez is making (good)

Ki Sung-yueng could turn out be the signing of the season as a free agent – and Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez are two quality center-backs.

So while we are furious with Mike Ashley we have a better squad than last year at this time.

What’s missing is Mike Ashley needs to allow Rafa to spend £20M or £30M or more, on players who are already top-notch to further strengthen the team.

But he won’t do that.

Here are tweets from our fans.

Alan’s right – this is now what we have to do.

It was always thought that Amanda Staveley had a good relationship with RAFA dating back to the time when he was at Liverpool & Staveley & Co showed interest in buying them. Rafa needs to sweet talk her back into making a renewed offer hopefully before the end of the year.
At least it should look attractive enough before we are involved in another relegation struggle.

Rondon and kenedy, a couple of million loan fee for Rondon is it. It’s good business i suppose, prob would cost us 40 million for those two, I know Kenedy will most probs go back to Chelsea, but our season is starting on a positive note for me after all the shenanigans as usual, looking forward to Saturday.

So little back up for several positions. Left back for me is a problem if Dummet, heaven forbid, has any injury woes. Not too sure who is going to be the back up, unless we use some of the youngsters. Another problem seems to be lack of scoring punch…….again! AHHHHH! Sure hope we find the net often, but think we will be looking at nail-biting defensive struggles again. Oh well, a win is a win. Right?

Dind’t take long for the Ashley apologists / glass half full types to show up now the window’s snapped shut.

You are all delusional. This has been a disastrous window. Ashley did not keep his promise of a net spend of 50M to Rafa has made it clear there’s nothing to invest in facilities & academy and hasn’t even fired and replaced Beardsley with a coach of Rafa’s choosing.

The guff Ashley gives he can’t afford to compete with Citeh is true only in that he couldn’t buy Citeh’s squad oturight. But that was not Rafa’s ask which was only:

    – net spend of 50M this window
    – every penny the club generates
    – complete control of transfers within the constraints above (so yes smashing the Owens record if that is what Rafa wants to bring in say a Townsend or proven striker)
    – investment in academy and training grounds

Ashley has and could have done that but gave the middle finger to Rafa and the person who posted Rafa is going to stay on for his project after this season ends really is in cloud cuckoo land. Rafa wasn’t just shafted he was humiliated publicly before the entire sporting world. He’s off we’ll be lucky for him to see the season through.

    Then of course we have:

    – No 10
    – No cover for Dummett (Lazaar lol) so we either play Clark at LB or 3 CBs and 2 wingbacks if he takes an injury
    – Rondon’s hardly a proven prem striker and clearly bottom half of Rafa’s “list”
    – Kenedy (loan no option to buy)

and then there’s this (repost of mine):

We should survive the season provided we don’t take serious injuries to Shelvey, Kenedy, Lascelles or Clark (possibly include Dummett in that list). Those players are key for us. Our long term problem is Rafa is leaving he will not sign for Ashley period so it’s that or Ashley sells up before spring to a buyer Rafa wants to work with and we don’t have options to buy Kenedy (or Rondon if he proves to be able to score under Rafa’s system).

If we do fail and go down we are going to have to sell Lascelles and Shelvey and Ritchie (those 3 won’t go down a level again) and probably several others, so that’s the core of the team right there.

As for managers to replace Rafa we won’t get anyone as good period and they will have to work under the same restraints so there’s everything to lose and nothing to gain.

Ashley has to sell. I just am at my wits end because I don’ see that happening until we go down and don’t pop straight back up (whether this year or next or the one after that). Ashley gets too much selling players and free advertising and tv money there is no way we are a money losing club from Sports Direct point of view and only reason to sell is if we stay down in the Championship more than one season.

I can see us doing a Coventry, Leeds, Forest and god forbid Sunderland… Seriously time in the wilderness is probably only thing that will make Ashley sell for what anyone is willing to play. Really, really worried… Thought we’d get a buyer with Rafa in charge but seems not.

Worst is that the more successful we ae this season the more convinced Ashley will be in his ownership… minimal outlay, selling club forever in the bottom half. It really is hopeless at this point yet I know I’m still going to support the team. It’s us that are punished by this, Ashley just makes money off our club.

    Give you heads a shake.

    Good window my backside.

    Rant over

the squad should not be judged on how much the players cost, it should be judged on how well the play as a team.

I honestly don’t give too hoots how much is spent in any given window, i just want to see a well coached team trying to win games, and hopeywin more than we lose.

Neymar cost nearly €200mill and caused chaos at PSG. Pogba £90 mil and only turned up for a hand full of games.

Hoping for a top 10 finish again, and actually think we will finish 8th

Been following the blog for the last week between sunbathing and swimming on the Norfolk Costa Del Sol!
and despite all of the false alarms and red herrings it hasn’t been as bad a window as it was looking at one stage.

Yes a (large) tad of commitment from our club owner may have helped somewhat but on the other hand it could make Rafa and the players we have more determined to succeed and closer knit as a unit.

We now have two Fernadez’s and I reckon the younger one will be the one to really shine for us and he has filled in pretty well as a defender so injury to Yedlin may not be such a problem.

And as Toonces pointed out Rafa seems to have been given Roberts a testing to see if he could fill in for Dummet and it looks like he could.

Hoping to be home in time for the game Saturday, hate to miss the 1st game of the season, we owe Spurs a bit of revenge for the 1st game last season, wouldn’t it be a shame if one of our defenders (Big Mo’s twin brother) unfortunately injured Harry Kane causing him to miss half of the season.

I can see our opening team having a familiar look to last seasons teams with the defence apart from lejeune being the same, Ritchie, Jonjo, Big Mo and Kenedy midfield and Perez upfront, the other upfront position being the real puzzler with several possibilities.

    Roll on saturday.

So getoutofworeclub what’s your solution then? WE are stuck with the owner & so regrettably is RAFA. Sadly it’s the best of a bad do! Just get behind the lads who over performed for us last season. We have added a few new faces. Buying big does not always guarantee success. The Fulham & Wolves managers have got to get all their changes to gell. Not easy , we’ll just have to wait and see won’t we?

Time has come to throw in this one.
Perhaps Armadillo Ashley has done what he has – i.e made the Club “leaner” in order to sell it. He has now taken a very large chunk of cash out i.e. £20.5M net from transfer dealings, the money from Rafa & the players efforts in finishing 10th last season & ALL the TV money. Enter Amanda Staveley & Co again? – here’s hoping.
Someone tell me what is the current value of the Club today?

I get absolutely no sense of feeling that Ashley intends to sell, I know a lot of optimists are putting forward the idea that he is preparing the club for a sale but frankly I don’t see it happening, not in the near future anyway.

Pain, cheers buddy, I checked in a few times and tried to post but pub / campsite wifi made it a challenge….

    My thoughts on the window:

Could have been better. We have obvious areas which need cover / strengthening such as LB and No 10 (these don’t grow on trees btw) and had the money available to make it happen. That this money was not released is bewildering and supremely frustrating.

The signings we made are good. Kenedy loves it here and could be our player of the season, Dubs is a steal, Muto could be brilliant and KSY, Schar, Rondon and Fernandez have strengthened the spine of the squad.

    My thoughts on the squad:

Better than last season but by retaining key members Rafa has kept its integrity. This will stand us in good stead for the season ahead and I don’t see us being relegated at this point.

However, we’re thin in places. Left back is a concern if Dummett is injured, although Kenedy could slot in with Ritchie ahead of him to provide cover. Sterry looks like he’s bulked up this season and may be a good proposition also. Neither is ideal.

    My thoughts on Ashley:

He’s up to something. Either he’s hedging against a replacement manager requiring funds after Rafa leaves, or he’s paying off his loan or keeping the club accounts looking healthy for a potential sale. Time will tell, but if he’s promised Rafa one thing and not delivered (again) then Rafa won’t be happy.

    My thoughts on Rafa:

He seems frustrated and I can understand that. For whatever reason, his top targets have failed to arrive. Only he knows what has been going on behind the scenes and if he is happy with the way the club have conducted business but I suspect he’s not. He will be having a good hard think about his future with NUFC and will be devastated to have to walk away from yet another massive club because of the lack of vision from its owners, but it won’t happen during this season.

    My thoughts on the protests:

It’s good to see these becoming more organised and the various groups delivering the same message. Peaceful resistance is the order of the day, violence and personal abuse will lose us any sympathy we are building in the wider National consciousness very quickly. Having influential people like Shearer and Chi Onwurah speaking out is very useful to bring our grievances to a wider stage.

People are free to protest as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. Nobody has the right to tell anyone else how to go about this, whether that be ending season ticket subscriptions or keeping them, carrying flags and banners or protesting outside Ashley’s shops. I respect those that have given up their season tickets as much as I respect those that have retained them. Each have valid arguments and who am I to tell folk how to live their lives?

Personally, I’d prefer to see any formal protests kept away from SJP on match days as it can become toxic, affecting the atmosphere on the pitch and becoming intimidating. We all saw the scenes at West Ham last season which quickly got out of control and the upset kids and worried parents in the stands. I wouldn’t want to see that at SJP. I would hope at least that any protests were kept to times when the players were off the pitch. When they’re on it they need our full support.

Ashley ain’t selling. Not until a £400 million offer comes in. We’re stuck with him until then.

Unless of course we get relegated and don’t come back up. Two years in the championship will devalue us to around £250 million and at that point someone will take a punt at buying us and hopefully we can return to where we should be as a club.

Until then, enjoy the season lads and lasses.

Well that brought a response didn’t it?Just playing devil’s advocate. My view is he’s playing the gambler again – just shelving out hopefully enough for RAFA to give him yet another season in the top flight. So what does he do when RAFA walks out either at the end of his contract or before? He’s stuffed then because nobody in their right mind will come to manage our club under this pathetic unambitious regime

I wouldn’t be too sure of that

Fulham announced five players, all after the deadline – Marseille midfielder Andre-Frank Anguissa in a £22.3m deal, Bristol City left-back Joe Bryan for £6m and Sergio Rico, Luciano Vietto and Timothy Fosu-Mensah on loan. That made them the first promoted team ever to spend over £100m in the summer.

Where do you start after that debacle. How about a few facts. Ashley’s statement of ‘every penny’ has resulted in approx 20 million going OUT of the club into the FCB pocket. He has spent more on his PR in the last year than on players. He states he no longer gets involved in the day to running of the club, leaving it to Rafa and Shrek but clearly sticks his heed in when it comes to spending £££
I keep reading about we need a left back and what if we sell Lascelles in January? I may be wrong but my main concern at the moment is what happens if Shelvey gets injured? Have we got another creative midfielder. Rafa’s biggest fight should be against the clubs we face next season and NOT the owner of the club he represents.

JIB seems to be overjoyed with all the journeyman players we’ve brought in. These are the calibration of players that Sunderland used to buy and we used to look at them & laugh.
At least when Carr was here we bought young players with potential, a lot didn’t work out but some did exceptionally well.
Now we are just buying players who have already proved to be mediocre at best. Exceptions are Dubravka (who was already here) & Kennedy but he isn’t even ours.
No-one else wanted these players, there’s a reason
    Journeymen Utd
In fact we own literally one player who is young and has the capacity to become a very good player and that’s Lacelles. It’s frankly depressing that everyone else is at the peak of their powers and still bang average.

But Armadillo won’t sell for £400M will he . If an offer came in he would want £500M. In any case a suitable investor has then got to take into account how much it would cost to take the Club from 10th & into the top 6. What , another £400/500M for players plus taking training facilities, the academy etc to the next level. you’re talking £1000Million plus. Therefore very limited marketplace. Ashley accepts he can’t do it with his “wealth” so happy to keep milking it. Just like the Oyster family have done at Blackpool on a much much smaller scale.

Yeah, the group will stay up under Rafa and depending on injuries possibly finish upper mid. Negative twenty million net spend and so you have to think Ashley really does have the club in the shop window now and his plan B is for the banked money to be offered to Rafa as a war chest to sign on again or as a war chest for someone else to be enticed to take his place, if they can’t find a buyer. I tend to think plan B might actually be plan A. Loads of broken promises, but for sure something is up behind the scenes. That’s the best I can up with to explain this very odd window, though it has to be said not untypical window under Ashley, where the books certainly do come first.

After 11 years of Ashley we know the ambition died the day he took over, come the end of the season unless a miracle happens No Rafa No Kenedy and Lascelles will no doubt want out too.

Look at Wolves team on paper its very good better than ours will they finish higher? who knows we have Rafa, at least they are giving it a go.
