Missed Penalty In Stoppage Time Denies The Win – Hayden, Kenedy Will Get 3 Match Bans – Manquillo Injured

Newcastle were second best most of the time against Cardiff City today and we had a man sent off after 68 minutes when substitute Isaac Hayden was given his marching orders after a poor tackle.

Isaac looked out of sorts in the second half and was a forlorn figure as he walked off the pitch – maybe his personal situation is affecting him.

He had been brought on for the injured Manquillo at the start of the second half but he had as much success in stopping left winger Josh Murphy as Manquillo had – very little.

Josh had terrific pace down the left wing.

Cardiff looked the more likely to score in the second half and that was before Isaac was sent off but we held on well in those final 20 minutes.

But then in stoppage time, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Sean Morrison handled in the box, but our usual penalty taker, Matt Ritchie had been subbed.

So up stepped Kenedy but the goalkeeper saved it – and we lost an excellent chance to get our first win – even if it wasn’t deserved.

You have to be able to convert penalties in the Premier League.

And as well as Isaac Hayden getting a three-match ban so will Kenedy after lashing out in the first half at Victor Camarasa as he kicked the player deliberately.

That is certain to bring him a three-match ban with a retroactive video review.

So there was a lack of discipline today with Manquillo lucky in the first half not to get a second yellow as he had a difficult time of it up against Josh Murphy.

And we’ll have to see how Manquillo is with his injury – and we haven’t got many fullbacks.

Luckily Yedlin should be back for the Chelsea game next weekend.

Rafa cannot have been pleased with this game – we looked very poor.

We have to play a lot better than this in our next three very tough league games against Chelsea (H), Manchester City (A) and Arsenal (H).

Teams:

Cardiff: Etheridge, Bennett, Morrison, Manga, Arter, Ralls, Zohore, Murphy (Mendez-Laing, 78), Camarasa (Decordova-Reid, 76), Bamba, Hoilett (Paterson, 83).
Subs not used: Smithies, Richards, Cunningham, Madine.

Newcastle: Dubravka; Manquillo (Hayden, 46), Clark, Lascelles, Dummett; Diame, Shelvey; Ritchie (Murphy, 70), Perez (Muto, 65), Kenedy; Joselu.
Subs not used: Darlow, Ki, Rondon, Fernandez.

Bookings: Ritchie 3, Manquillo 30 Camarasa 62, Ralls 80
Sent off: Hayden 66 Referee:
Craig Pawson (Sheffield)

If Yedlin played today the Cardiff Murphy wouldn’t have been so dangerous watching as he’d need to be more defensive with Yedlin energy and runs.

And the Cardiff Murphy looks so much more confident than our Jacob. Maybe he needs a consistent run in the team to improve and gain confidence, which he has never really had in all honesty

The only positive to take from that is surely we can’t get worse. It will be funny as foot if Ashley has to sack Rafa.

Everyone blaming Kenedy is a joke. It’s a sorry state of affairs when you haven’t got a good enough striker to be taking the pen, not even an attacking central midfielder, a winger. Disgrace and shows how rubbish the side is

He’d look like the biggest bell end in the world of football. Sacking a manager that finished tenth on a shoestring and made you 40M in transfers, having to sack him because you thought you knew better than him ha ha.

I thought our Murphy did ok today when he came on considering the circumstances, overall I still think he’s a very good young player, certainly played better than Kennedy today.
The only reason his brother is first choice is because Cardiff needed him straight in there team,we don’t or didn’t when he came so it’s going to take him longer to break into first team starts, but I think he will this season and we will see who the best brother is.

IMO shelvey should have taken the pen purely because Kenedy had such a poor game. Expecting him to score after such a poor game was a huge ask. Rondon should get a start against Chelsea hopefully. There were some positives to the game we played a hell of a lot better when we got rid of the dead wood at RB felt sorry for Hayden tho was never a red.

Will Kenedy miss the next four games when he gets the inevitable 3 match ban?
Our next game is against Chelsea who he couldn’t play against anyway therefore will the suspension only be applicable following next weeks match?

The kickout by kenedy is not the first time he’s seen red mist in a black and white shirt. He got away with similar last season too. Sooner or later he will cost us during a match.

That said, he is one of the only players we have who has the confidence to take on defenders. He does make a difference for us but only if he keeps his head.

I agree that I think he is the potential to be a cracking little player, he just seems like the occasion gets to him anytime I see him, Josh looks to have settled very quickly, he looks like he is enjoying it whereas Jacob looks awestruck at times, maybe it’s the being a fan thing!

Tbh Kennedy looks like a poor man’s Ben Arfa, sure when he pulls things off he looks great, but everytime he had the ball he refused to pass or cross ect before first attempting to do a trick or beat a man… He is one of the many players who has tricks in his bag but also has no comprehension when to use them and when not too.

And I have no idea why he took the peno, I wouldn’t want him on penos even if he was having a stormer never less the pitiful game he had, it should of been Shelveys all day long just like the earlier free kick, which was equally a abysmal as his pen.

Much as I am a great fan of Benitez I have found some of his decisions in the first two games absolutely unbelievable. Against Spurs we were on the offensive looking for an equaliser when he takes off Ritchie who looked really up for it and brought on a shocking Atsu. This killed the attack threat after that.
Today he took Perez off early who looked the only player capable of getting away from his man and brought on Muto. I would have left him on and put Muto on instead of Kenedy who was having an absolute shocker. Then to leave Joselu on and keep Rondon on the bench didn’t make sense.
Finally to let Kenedy take the penalty when, because of his disgraceful performance, we ALL knew he was going to miss was just insane.
What with Ashley’s reluctance to spend on reinforcements, injuries, the poor ability of the majority of our players and these absurd managerial changes the outcome can only be relegation.
That penalty miss today could be vital and with the frightening looming fixtures I can see us being rock bottom by Christmas.

Poor poor performance. Is it not time referee’s are held accountable – this fella was utter rubbish for the second week in a row. Haydin may be recinded as it looked a poor decision. The ref gave a foul for the incident with kenedy so as far as i understand it the foul was given so therefore no further punishment for kenedy?? Wtf is Perez even getting into our squad never mind starting eleven. I wish i could take some positives from this but i cannot !!!!!!!

Think we need a little bit of perspective. The whole midfield didn’t perform today. Shelvey got deeper as the game went on and Kenedy got crowded out. Hayden left his brain on the bench when he came on. Sadly only 1 point but more importantly it looks as though Kenedy will get a 3 match ban on Monday.

Joselu is so bad I am actualy baffled to how he got a professional contract in the first place, he is incapable of scoring unless its a total fluke or if its put on a plate for him and he still missed most of them.

Thanks for clarifying the rules for me. In most teams you’re best striker will be a striker and therefore best penalty taker. Yeah there’s a few exceptions, usually world class players eg lampard, Gerrard. Kenedy is neither of those, he’s not even a double digit goal scorer, he’s a winger; a young, inexperienced one at that with raw skills that can make him a decent prem player consistently, over time.

So I stand by if we had a decent striker they’d had taken the penalty, my point is we haven’t, and it’s a disgrace

I 2as just about to post that Hayden was playing better that manquillo about a second before the red card,he’d got a few blocks in and was up for the tackles but I think that tackle was thoughtless ,there was other players to cover him and he didn’t need to take the risk but that’s about her player who had a disrupted pre season ,overall our preseason was terrible ,players signed too late to gel Hayden with family issues,Kennedy on peteraty leave.

Prior preparation and planing prevents pish poor performance, and the club defiantly planned badly this season. Ashley or Rafa? I think the majority on here know the answer to that, and for those who need a clue Rafa warned him!

Referee was following the ball during the Kenedy incident and didn’t see it properly. So he can still face retrospective action because he wasn’t yellow carded for it.

We were shocking today. Kenedy was lucky not to be sent off, but I thought the decision on Hayden was very poor from a God awful ref.

Cardiff were unlucky? with the pen. Was it really inside the area? Why didn’t Shelvey take it, anyone but Kenedy.

If we play like this it will be a long, long season.

    Moonraker,

I think that they were different incidents, so I expect Kenedy to be banned. I just hope Manquillo’s injury is sufficient to keep him out also. Where did he come from? One of the worst players I have ever seen. Even worse than Tommy Gibb (God bless him).
