During his loan spell in the second half of last season, Kenedy said that Rafa Benitez was like a father to him and certainly Rafa improved the player a lot last season.
We are hoping that will continue this season and so far Kenedy had a good game against Tottenham and was our Man of the Match – and he got great reviews.
Some Chelsea fans were asking why he was on loan and not in their squad – he was so good.
But he had a poor game on Saturday at Cardiff and now he will get a three-game retroactive ban for kicking out at a player in the first half.
And some Chelsea fans said the club should sell him next summer – because he looked hopeless.
We have to remember Kenedy is a work in progress but that part of his game – discipline on the field – is not particularly good.
He has often reacted and lashed out when things are not going well – and that has to be cut out – and soon too.
Kenedy and Rafa Benitez talking in training
But Rafa Benitez is the perfect man to guide Kenedy in his football development and this is what the boss said about Kenedy after the game, as reported today in the Chronicle:.
“It will not be good if he gets a ban but it is important that he stays focused.”
“It is a time when we know everything has changed since last season.”
“We have a lot of players who are the same players as last season, and we need to make sure we start playing at the same level we played at before, towards the end of last season.”
“We have new additions, we have increased the competition, and what we need to make sure is that every player is focused and ready to give everything for the team.”
“They have to keep pushing every game.”
“Yes, he (Kenedy) listens to advice. This group of players, they are quite good in the training sessions.”
“They are keen to do and learn things. Sometimes they can do them, sometimes they cannot, but we have to keep working.”
“Yes I think all of us will learn from this game.”
If Kenedy is suspended, he will miss the Chelsea game on Sunday, the League Cup Carabao Cup second-round tie with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday and the visit to the Etihad Stadium the following Saturday – September 1st.
Not sure if the Chelsea game will count because he cannot play in that game in any case, so if it doesn’t count he will miss the home game after the International break – against Arsenal – September 15th.
But Rafa is upbeat and Kenedy listens to him, so the Brazilian should soon put this lack of discipline behind him.
We hope that happens.
