Newcastle went out to contain Chelsea this afternoon at St. James’ Park and it was 0-0 at the half.
But then the referee gave a dodgy penalty after 76 minutes to Chelsea when Fabian Schar seemed to get the ball in his tackle on Alonso – and Hazard made no mistake from the spot.
But then Joselu scored his second goal of the season and it was 1-1 after 83 minutes and it looked we could get a good point.
But would you believe it – but an own goal from DeAndre Yedlin made it 2-1 to Chelsea with only 3 minutes to play.
And that’s the second successive home defeat for Newcastle.
DeAndre Yedlin own goal – ouch!
Newcastle and Rafa will get criticism (as usual) with Newcastle having only 19% of possession in this home game.
Our next league game before the two-week International break is at Manchester City next Saturday.
Here’s Alan Shearer’s reaction to a tough loss.
What a sickener that was. Great effort from everyone. Wasn’t to be. #NEWCHE

Comment #1Well the apparently the guy on charge of refs has said if VAR was used in that incident then it would have been a pen. Surprised at that as I thought he won the ball first, apparently the scissor action is what penalised him.
I honestly can’t keep up with these rule changes on tackles

The only thing pathetic here is you for a so called fan I’ve never once seen you post anything positive about the club, all you do is predict to lose every game an did we lose make snide remarks. Your either a troll or a sad pathetic excuse of a fan.

Comment #4Simply put I blame the amateur ref, it had 0-0 all over it until his ridiculous decision, people moaning how we played where calling rafa a genius last year in games like this where we got a draw or nicked a win.

Wat a crock of shite i expect at least 3 penalties a game for each team from now on then

Comment #7Defended well, we got beat, atmosphere was non existent, fans flat as a f a r t. Imo Benitez again shows no trust in his players setting up like that, soul destroying at SJP, parking the bus at home, I’m embarrassed, looking for a point to save his own face.

Comment #8I was expecting a caning off Chelsea so quite upbeat
We’ll likely get humped off Man Shitty but then there’s
a break – this is a good squad with great spirit.
No way we are relegation material

Comment #11Souness is an absolute hypocrite because we played awful football when he was manager and he had much better players to play with. Souness is saying he’d rather lose 0-3 but give it a go as a player. That’s how you get relegated.

Comment #14All you morons saying you’d rather lose than play like this???? What the hell???? You are not fit to call yourself fans of this club.
I want my team to win. I don’t care how we win, whether it’s by parking the bus and nicking a goal or by kicking the other team off the park so long as we win. All the other big clubs are cheats – it’s a dog eat dog world, and honour and playing attractive football at the expense of results will lead to relegation.

You should be on the anti-NUFC blog. You’re a downright disgrace.
Did you see who were the Chelsea subs ? Barkley, Willian and Giroud !
It was a top prem. side against a good championship side. Thanks for that Mike.
If goal difference decides things at the end of the season, that will put this result in perspective.

Comment #18Negative set up and tactics and it was always going to end up this way. I remember it going down the same way against Man City last season. We may not have the players to beat teams like Chelsea but at least give it a f**king go! If you defend so deep with the whole team the relentless waves of attack from the opposition will always end up with them scoring, us chasing the game and them scoring another.

Comment #19Rafa has said that Lascalles was one of six players we have injured and didn’t play due to an ankle injury.
Refs are giving decisions they can’t be certain on as they want to force the introduction of VAR to get them off the hook.
We’ve dropped four points in three games and these are the points we need.
Sky are getting the start to the season they’ve paid for.

Comment #24Ah rubbish vashtar. A team can defend bravely but still offer a threat. We didn’t. We wasn’t a fret :). Seriously we have all seen weaker teams beat or draw with better teams because they had an attitude to be positive when they had the ball. We have international players in that team and we played like Halifax town. Not at home Rafa please.

Comment #28I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Benitez is not the messiah and tactical genius he’s made out to be. Ironically enough, he was found out at Chelsea – just ask any of their supporters and they’ll tell you. There is something seriously amiss at this club and it’s not just the owner!

Comment #30For being thrown together last minute I thought Schar and Fernadez played well and we kept a higher line
Diame has a good game in midfield
Rondon – poor mans Leon Best lot of running well kind of running
Lot more movement from Josrlu when he came on and great flick header for equaliser
No way was it a free kick for their winner
Marks
Dubravka 6- nowt much to do but did well what he had to do
Yedlin 6 – decent game great cross for goal
Schar 7 – did defended well won everything in the air
Ferdinez 8- my MOM defended well and organised the defence
Dummett 6 – gave their wingers far to much space
Clark 6 – unlucky with pen and defended well but needs one touch to many on the ball
Diame 7 – getting back to his best
Ritchie 7- Another who played OK did not see much of the ball tho
Ki 5 – some nice touches but very lightweight and easily bossed off the ball
Murphy 6 – decent but again to easily gets knocked off the ball and always wants to cut inside or back onto his right foot
Rondon 5 – poor battled away but has not got the control to play up front on his own
Subs
Joselu 5 great goal and a lot more movement than Rondon
Perez 4 – won free kicks which we wasted ok
Mutu – not on long enough
Rafa – 6 subs still baffle but went out with tactics to get a point nearly worked but awful to watch giving possession and space to the opposition at home

Comment #31Arsenal had a go last match v Chelsea. Arsenal have aubameyang, lacazette, Ozil, mkhitaryan. Arsenal lost. They got zero points. We got zero points with different tactics. Why would things magically be different if we ‘had a go’?

Comment #32Rafa got his tactics spot on today. We defended fantasically and were really unlucky.
The first penalty was right in front of me – he got a huge touch on the ball, not one of these little brushes, but a proper touch. The referee couldn’t wait to give it, the barsteward.
We scored a great goal – lovely ball from Yedlin, lovely header from Joselu. Girouds dive was a disgrace – clutching his face after Yedlin brushed his arm. Goal should defo have stood.
Maybe we should have defended better for their winner – could Yedlin have done better? Hmm not sure.
Fernandez was great today – looked a class above Clark and Schär (who both did well)! Hopefully he and Jamaal will form a solid partnership until Lejeune returns. Dummett was solid. Yedlin was okay defensively but offered loads going forward – he should be a winger not a full back. I was disappointed with Ki and Diame still needs to get back to his best. We missed Shelvey. Ritchie and Murphy both played well. Rondon did nowt – but fair enough to be honest given his lack of service. Although he’s clearly not as good as Joselu – you give him one chance and he takes it! He played really well after coming on – I was surprised.
We didn’t deserve to lose – I am absolutely livid at the referee and those cheating cockney scumbags. HWTL

Comment #36Sarri has been interviewed and could not understand Benitez setting up like that at home, we did it last season v man city, lost, goal difference pattern makes me I’ll, we are three games in, i feel we have not got a relegation team, Benitez has already been moaning about the loss of certain players before the game, and weather his full squad had been available he would have done the same thing, the ghosts of SJP will be turning in their grave, I cannot believe our set up after after 3 games in. Just my opinion, breaks my heart at SJP.

Comment #38We were missing 3rd of our first team (lascelles, Lejuene, shelvey and kenedy). It’s obvious we don’t have great quality in depth yet people expect us to be strong enough to go out have a go like Arsenal did but do better than them without having the attacking quality they have. Mind absolute boggles sometimes!

Comment #39We really need a more forward thinking coach.Loosing 2-1 to chelsea is fine but the way we played was misrable. See what Fulham are doing and how they are utilizing mitro.Players can only shine when we play to their strengths and play football. For sheer number of supporters in the stadium we deserve more entertainment.Loosing Rafa won’t be a big loss as far as footballing intrests goes.Afterall we pay to see football being played and the way we play is certainly not football.

Comment #40I wonder if those who are saying we should have had a go saw the city Huddersfield match where Huddersfield got hammered 6-1 and it could easily have been more. With the players we have having a go against teams like Chelsea is only going to end up badly for us we’re not going to magically win because we’ve “had a go”.
