Rafa Makes A Point And Gets A Dig In At Ashley

Federico Fernandez made his debut yesterday for Newcastle and looked such a good player at the heart of Newcastle’s defense.

And in Florian Lejeune’s absence, he could well become Newcastle’s number one center-back,

The £6M man from Swansea looked a bargain buy yesterday in Newcastle’s valiant but unsuccessful attempt to get something out of this game against Chelsea.

A soft penalty and an own goal were our undoing but we were so unlucky – just like against Tottenham two weeks ago.

Federico Fernandez – played so well on his Newcastle debut

This is what Rafa said after the game about Federico who was with Rafa for one season at Napoli:

“They had some chances in the second half when they changed and when we were more open, but you have to give credit to him and to the rest of the players.”

“It’s confirmation of what I say, that sometimes you need players with experience, in this case experience in the Premier League, to help the players around to be better players.

“To make so many changes because you have to do it today and also to change the system.”

“And to put players who don’t know each other too well in another system on the pitch performing the way that we did.”

“I don’t remember too many Chelsea chances in the first half.”

Rafa was short of experienced players last season and we dropped points because of that.

Ashley wants to sign players 26-years-old and younger but as usual, he’s just looking at the money angle – and the profit he can make on players.

Rafa’s thinking about building a good team and those are two different things,

Rafa managed to get Rondon, Fernandez, and Ki in this summer – Rondon on loan – and they all have lots of Premier League experience and they all started yesterday.

Fabian Schar and Yoshinori Muto are experienced Internationals but have to get used to the Premier League.

What do you think?

    Catchy
Rafa at real is irrelevant to us in our situation under Ashley.

Somewhat agree that we have a better squad even though it was not exactly strengthened. It was all about wheel an deal. Sell someone and replace. Still lack any quality in depth other than at cb. The first team though is not exactly improved on last season. Possibly on rondon and muto over Gayle but I was a fan of him and think we miss him.

Still in light of this, others have strengthened around us so to finish mid table is still an overachievement.

Be interesting if we go on the front foot against Forest. Rafa adapts the same tactics and he is gonna get slaughtered

I reckon he’ll play a completely different team so it would be unfair to compare the performances between that match and the Chelsea match. Although some will do so regardless lol. I reckon sterry, longstaff, woodman/Darlow start and possibly Roberts to get significant game time.

Some were making a point about Mitro scoring for Fulham yesterday. The thing is IF he’d been in our team yesterday he wouldn’t have got a sniff on goal. Two completely different approaches to the game by them and us.
Rafa’s letting other clubs dictate our game.

I thought pre season if we didn’t sign a striker (proper striker) we would probably get relegated this season. I’ve seen nothing so far to convince me otherwise.

I will still cling to the hope that most others on the blog are correct with their top ten predictions and I’m just crackers. (For the time being)

Yeah agree I see a different team and also hopefully a different set up mate. Forest although spent big money haven’t exactly hit the ground running so should be an interesting game..Hopefully a win

Rafa selects the games we need to park the bus! Note; not all games so it’s called a game plan ! It’s not a philosophy! If we had set up to attack Chelsea we would’ve been beaten 4 or 5. The pundits would be eulogising over Hazard and Georgino and slaughtering Rafa for being naive. Chelsea’s goalie cost more than our team! Get real; Ashley is strangling our club! He has to go !

If any Newcastle fan was asked to name our three most influential players from last season it would be Shelvey, Lascelles and Kenedy. All three – basically a third – were missing.
If you took David Silva, Aguerro and De Bruyne out of City’s team they wouldn’t look the same either.
Strength in depth is not one of our strong points. That’s down to Ashley, not Rafa.
Nor would I worry about what Rafa says to the press. He’s probably already told the squad that it’s politics, not personal.
Without our three best players we lost to Chelsea. Did anyone expect different?

After reading some of these comments I’m starting to understand why we get called deluded. Here we have the best manager we’ve had in over a decade who has gotten us promoted and got us to tenth last season yet after 3 games where we’ve played 2 of the top 4 people are turning on him and even calling him to be sacked. All I say is thank god none of these are our managers as we’d be on the end of constant hammerings as they think attacking football is the only football. Also can one of these people name one manager who would do a better job that we can realistically get?

prey tell, i would love to know our philosophy.

whoscored has us as a team that

    Newcastle United’s Style of Play
    Take a lot of shots
    Long balls
    Attempt through balls often
    Attacking down the right
    Aggressive
    Rotate their first eleven
    Playing in their own half.

    – Weaknesses
    Finishing scoring chances
    Weak
    Avoiding individual errors
    Weak
    Defending set pieces
    Weak
    Keeping possession of the ball
    Very Weak
    Avoiding fouling in dangerous areas
    Very Weak

all seems to match up with how i see us play..

some of you guys must use pretty good specs to see anythinng other

There’s a reason we’re weak, it’s down to not providing funds for the manager to do his job.
We can dance all night but the facts are we’re not good enough because we won’t spend like every other club does.
Seriously, give me one manager who could get better from this squad?
Our first eleven is good enough to survive, but take the best three out and we will always struggle against billionaire clubs like Chelsea. Their keeper cost more ffs.
And no, money doesn’t guarantee results, but if you believe it doesn’t help you’re crazed. Managers are generally careful who they pay a small fortune for after all.
Give him the tools to do the job and he’s a proven winner. Even Pep couldn’t win the league before spending another quarter billion on City.
Blaming Rafa for this is short sighted. Pathetic even. There’s only one man to blame and it ain’t Rafa.

Catchy, you know perfectly well I was talking about outfield players, which is why I deliberately missed Dubravka out. A goalkeeper doesn’t influence games, he does a singular job. He may change games with saves, but he doesn’t really influence performances. Shelvey does. Lascelles does and Kenedy does – generally anyway. One bad game – big deal.

Your right we have a generally weak squad for the premier league and with cirtain players out we become a below average team and yes MA is holding the club and Rafa back.
But I think we are capable of more than Rafa and many fans give us credit for.
Sorry but we shouldn’t be sitting back for a whole game it’s not competitive at all and 9 times out of 10 we lose anyway.
I can’t speak for others but I’d rather loose 3-0 and say we gave it ago than that performance yesterday, which we lost anyway.
