Rafa Benitez has said some positive words about the contribution of Newcastle’s new goalkeeper Martin Dubravka who was our Man of the Match on Saturday at Manchester City.
The lads put in another good performance, but we couldn’t get any points for the third league game out of four so far this season.
We have one point from the first four games, but our goal difference is -3 which is the best of the bottom six clubs.
That’s not really the stat we wanted to be talking about this early in the season.
But we seem to have brought in one or two bargain buys this summer and Martin Dubravka could be the best of the lot.
Rafa Benitez congratulating Martin Dubravka last Saturday
Here’s what Rafa has said about the goalkeeper who seems to be a leader on and off the field:
“When we signed Dubravka, we knew we were signing a good keeper.”
“Not too many people knew him, but we were following him for a while and we knew he was a good keeper.”
“We also knew he had a very good mentality and was a good professional.”
“He has been very good in the dressing room, and in these type of games, his contribution is very important for us.”
“When you have teams that are attacking so much, the keeper is the one that can give confidence to the defenders and he is doing well.”
One reason we think we have a better squad and better first team this season compared to a year ago is that we have this man between the sticks.
Dubravka will prove to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League as this season progresses.
He’s a fantastic acquisition for Newcastle

Comment #1A lot of people on here (including myself) were championing Darlow to remain first choice keeper until Dubravka arrived. I must say, I would much rather see Dubravka starting over Darlow now, however, Darlow is still young, and could still have a future with us, so I’m not writing him off yet.

Comment #3I think because we signed Darlow the same time
as Lascelles from Forest that folk think he’s good
as well – he’s crap – typical English goalie – pulls
off the odd spectacular reflex save but hopeless at
the nuts and bolts of goalkeeping which is 98% of
his time on the pitch.

I had to laugh at one of your typical fifty faced posts from earlier.
You went to great lengths to defend players flinching from a rasping shot
Yet
You made a blogging career of slagging off Fabricio Coloccini for the same
thing – even branding him a “curly haired coward”
You should leave the rigs and become a politician

Absolutely optimistic I agree

Forget that you are a coward for a minute

Comment #11I wonder who would be regarded as NUFC’s best ever goalkeeper? I feel like it’s been a pretty average position for us over the years.

Comment #14Yeah, I guess it would be Given. Would you say he was elite though?
