There’s a piece in Ojogo in Portugal that say Newcastle got only €4.5M for Chancel Mbemba who we always thought was a good player but was hardly used by Rafa Benitez when he arrived at Newcastle in March 2016.
It was a very good move for Chancel, and we had estimated the fee at £5M from reports at the time, although €4.5M is around £4.1M.
We paid around £9M for him when he was signed in the summer of 2015 from Anderlecht, so we surprisingly lost money on Mbemba.
The rumors of why Rafa didn’t rate him was that he didn’t follow instructions during games and today the Chronicle is reporting he was late for training a few times – which – if true – is not good.
Rafa demands that his players are professional.
Chancel Mbemba – in Porto’s colors
But we don’t want to stain the name of Chancel Mbemba either because he played very well in his first season on Tyneside, but then was almost ostracized by Rafa after he joined the club.
So if Rafa isn’t going to use a player – the same can be said for Aleksandar Mitrovic – we should sell them.
Newcastle got about £26M for both Mbemba and Mitrovic this summer, and they both joined us from Anderlecht three years ago for about that same combined amount – £26M.
This is what Rafa said about the center-back when he left the club:
“We are talking about a player where we know he has quality if we analyse him technically.”
“After, you have to settle down in the team, the city and the country. All these things together can make a big difference to the performance of a player on the pitch.”
“We had Jamaal [Lascelles], [Ciaran] Clark and [Florian] Lejeune doing well, so he didn’t have his space in the team for him.”
“There is an opportunity for him now to go to an important club and do well.”
Newcastle now seem to be very strong at center-back with Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar the new recruits, and we still have Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, and Florian Lejeune – when he’s fit again.
Newcastle could let one of those go next summer.
Florian may be back as early as January if all goes well with his recovery from a severe ACL injury he picked up in training.
We’ll remember Chancel Mbemba as a good player for us, and we hope he does very well at Porto.
What do you think?
