Elias Sorensen has scored eight goals this season for the Newcastle reserve side, and he scored the second goal last night in the 2-0 win over Notts County at Meadow Lane in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Newcastle signed the Danish youngster to some fanfare when he was 16 three years ago in 2015, and it looks like he’s coming through well under Newcastle’s new reserve team coach Ben Dawson.
We’ve had Peter Lovenkrands play for us from Denmark and also Jon Dahl Tomasson who was sold to Feyenoord after only one season at Newcastle when he was just 19-years-old.
Rafa Benitez
But Tomasson went onto success and played 112 times for Denmark with 52 goals and played at AC Milan for three seasons.
Sorensen has said this in the Chronicle today:
“Jon Dahl Tomasson is one I know about from Denmark because of the Newcastle link but it’s one I have had to look at the clips online as it was before my time really.”
“The player that I really looked up to when I was a kid was Fernando Torres at Liverpool. I thought he was unbelievable.”
“It’s a massive thing to be at a club where Rafa Benitez is. He is a big-name manager and he has won the Champions League.”
“It would be the dream to be managed by him.”
“I’m very happy to get that goal because at 1-0 up I think we were a bit shaky and with the scoreline like that anything can happen.
“Scoring that second goal just killed it off.”
“We knew that this would be a different game to Doncaster because they like to play football and play out from the back.”
“Notts County like to lump the ball long but we prepared very well for it.” “It was tough but we got the win.”
“You can tell in the Checkatrade Trophy that the teams are much more professional. They’re much bigger lads and I was struggling myself to hold the ball up at times.”
“You can see they just like to kick the ball long and try to win the second ball then play from there. It’s very tough.”
“It was massive for us to see the game through. We took our time from throw-ins and managed the game.”
“If they’d have been 2-0 up they’d have done the same to us.”
Let’s hope Elias can get his wish and he’s managed by Rafa Benitez.
That would mean that Elias makes it to the Newcastle first team squad and Rafa stays at Newcastle past next summer.
