It was an awful game and a poor performance from Newcastle yesterday, but the team is doing something right when you don’t play well yet still pick up a point.
At this stage, it’s a lot better than yet another defeat.
The last thing we wanted to happen was for Southampton to get their first home win of the season, and we at least prevented that from happening.
But the home side had much the better chances to score and but for our goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, they would surely have taken all 3 points.
Ayoze Perez in action yesterday
This is what Rafa Benitez said to Sky Sports after the game:
“I think we have to consider the circumstances. To go away when you are bottom of the table and get a clean sheet and a point, you have to think it’s more positive than negative.”
“It could be better but when they were pushing at the end, to get a clean sheet is a positive.”
“I think throughout the first half we were more or less fine. We could be better in possession.”
“In the second half we have to defend a bit more and we should have maybe pushed up a bit more. But it was difficult because they were pushing.”
“The positive is the team were working really hard.”
“I would say give credit to the other team. They were pushing hard and trying to win for their fans.”
“You could see they were a little bit nervous, we were a little bit nervous.”
” I think at this point you have to take the positive more than the negative. “
We may not be out of the woods for a while yet, and it’s that first win that hopefully will set us on our way.
Surely we can beat either Watford and/or Bournemouth at home in the next two games?

My main concern about the proposed boycots is that it reminds me of the Board Busters campaign in the 80s. Nobody came out of that one with dignity intact.

Comment #2I am all for a compleat boycott of a home game ..let’s fly by the seat of our pants let’s do it with complete abandon for the consequences ..
The message to Ashley will show he cannot treat fans, who give him their very hard earned money, with contempt.
The players can take it ..the 50 thousand to 100 thousand pounds per week they receive should offset any little twinge of dissapointed they will feel ..back to the range rover or in Shelveys case his lovely Ferrari .. takes it to Waitrose dontcha know ! , and then off home to the big house .
Shouldn’t feel too bad about the Boycott . We hurt more than they do with the massive compensations they get …
…Win, loose, or draw.

Yes, the proposed boycott is against Wolves rather than against Watford, but I still am fully behind it, as we have, to date, lost all our home matches so far this season without there having been any boycotts, so to blame a loss on a boycott would be stretching credibility.

Comment #5What’s worse, boycotting one home match or risking your place in the premier league by selling your top striker in January while in a relegation place ?
Ashley treats we supporters with utter disregard and contempt .

Comment #7Anyone have any footage of Perez shooting with his laces? Instead of his side footing balls straight at the keeper.
Seen better finishers of a ball at non league level.
Yes I’m deadly serious. He wouldn’t get a game for South Shields

Comment #8There’s too many people who go to the match and see it as a social outing and getting pissed, without a care for the Football .. At least 20 thousand . Its getting as bad as race days.
See them and smell them pouring out of the West stand , pissed and overfed ..makes me queezy
Would the mice please make some noise at the next home game ? Your a disgrace and don’t deserve to take up a seat at a Football Match .

Comment #9No need to worry about relegation. Burnley, Southampton, Cardiff, Brighton, Huddersfield are all worse than us and have worse squads.

Comment #10Our owner is rightly ridiculed for failing to provide funds for the manager.
But which owner would offer a 5 year contract to a manager with a record of 1 win in 16 and 11 defeats. Every other owner would be sacking the manager.
It is either a magnanimous gesture or pure incompetence again by Ashley.
Regardless of the poor players, should not a great manager be getting a better return from the same squad which came 11th 5 months ago?
I suspect Ashley is trying to stuff Rafa down our throats and saying you can stick your great manager. You can have your cake and eat it.

Comment #11A very sad day for football after yesterday’s news, especially with the Leicester situation. It’s awful to see things like that happening, not a day for bickering for me today!!

Comment #15Talking about boycotts I thought most fans liked dross football they’ve been paying to watch it for years, alot need to take a good look at the situation and realise how MA regime works. United?? Err certainly works for Ashley.

Comment #19We drew with them and should’ve beat them. They were both away games. Gutted about the Leicester owner. Was a successful bloke and was on about expanding the stadium to 42000.

Comment #22Been following the story about the helicopter crash involving the Leicester owner. What a contrast to what he did for his club and the city compared to Mr Tubbs ownership.
He would give people scarves, tops, free drinks, food etc etc. As well as big donations for local causes. He brought the fans, club and city together.
And we end up getting a scumbag like Mr Tubbs.

Lascelles,Kenedy,Diame,Perez,Ritchie are performing no where near as well as last season, there looks to be no commitment no sense of urgency, couldn’t give a stuff attitude, that’s down to the manager. After watching Hudders against Watford , they may have been second best but you couldn’t fault their attitude and commitment against a far better side than Southampton. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lascelles bails out in January.

I don’t give a rats if you’ve been supporting for 40 years. I’ve been supporting for 49 !! who’s b—y counting!!!
when have we ever, ever truly and meaningfully boycotted a match, when ?????? A few protests maybe down the years but never a full blown one off boycott. But if people can’t even be a—ed to do that, we kind of deserve havng Ash go nowhere for the forseeable.
If you count the Fairs cup in 69 well that’s alright that’s only 49 years ago. YCMIU !!!
Jib
You do seem to go a bit overboard and get very defensive with your endless support for Ashley. We might know he’s despised on Tyneside, but an empty stadium in front of sky cameras sends a much wider and broader message nationally and internationally and becomes less provincial, insular and inward looking.

I think it was reported that his son was in Thailand working on a business deal. Lucky escape for him but to have to live through the tragedy of what has happened maybe lucky isn’t the right word
If anything I think clubs / owners should rethink helicopters at stadiums, it could have been much worse for the fans in and around the area
