Salomon Rondon has had a tough start to this season on loan, but he showed last Saturday against Bournemouth what he can do when he’s fit.
He led the line magnificently drawing praise from none other than Alan Shearer – who knows a good striker when he sees one.
Rafa wanted to bring Salomon to the club permanently in the summer, but Mike Ashley would not pay out the £16.5M release clause in his contract for a 28-year-old player; Rondon turned 29 in September
He is on loan from West Brom for the season with Dwight Gayle going in the opposite direction.
Rondon still has 19 months left on his contract at the Baggies, but it seems like he is keen to make his move to Newcastle a permanent one.
Salomon Rondon – his young family are now with him in Newcastle
This is what Rondon has told the Chronicle today:
“Ever since I arrived here it has been friendly.”
“When I first signed some people recognized me around the city and they came over to say welcome.”
“They shook my hand and I asked them about the city.”I was settled here quickly.”
“I have played around the world but to be settled already is good.”
“I am settled and my family is settled, I now have to just keep on working.”
One question mark is how much will West Brom want for their striker in the summer.
It could even be more than £16.5M and depends on how well he does at Newcastle.
The irony is that the more goals he scores at Newcastle the higher the transfer fee will likely be, and Mike Ashley may refuse to pay the fee for a second time.
That would not surprise us.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1A fee of £16m would set Ashley off frothing at the mouth and as Rafa piles on the grief by asking to pay money, yes money, for more players this winter, I can see Ashley being taken off for counselling
Rafa really must learn to be more empathetic to the pressure Ashley’s under dealing with dissatisfied SD shareholders, customers, staff, closing HoF branches, MPs, councillors and Newcastle fans making life difficult for him.
It’s a hard life.

Comment #2He just turned 29 two months ago
Including this season he’s probably
(with a bit of luck) got 4 seasons left.
He’ll have no resale value but at £4M
a season if he proves to be the player
I think he is , he’s a bargain.

Given the grief Jib’s had over the jobs some claim he’s claimed he’s had and the suggestion that imposters have been posting lies, I’ve decided to take the advice offered by other posters – added an avatar to my account.
I’ve had an imposter post under my name on here years ago. It was spotted Bo until it was spotted and removed.
But, unlike poor old Jib who’s busy 24/7 and has a PA who doesn’t scan ‘his’ posts and thus ‘his’ claims became more and more incredible.
It’s so easy for things to get out of hand when you’re living life in the fast labour. Have a heart and go easy on him

At £4m a year plus wages, Rondo could be a bargain but Ashley doesn’t see things that way – as well you know

Comment #6lesh, Jib, in my opinion it’s really less about what Ashley thinks about an individual player at this point and more about what Ashley thinks about Rafa.
If Rafa wants to keep Rondon and Ashley wants to keep Rafa, we’ll keep him.
If Rafa wants to keep Rondon but Ashley’s not bothered about Rafa, they’ll both be down the road.

Comment #7The real challenge will be if West Brom come straight back up. If West Brom look as if they’ll stay in the Championship then a deal is so much easier to do but I’d say at the moment they have every chance of coming straight back up due to Gayle’s goals. Now that is irony.

wouldn’t it be much less than £16.5M if he’ll only have 1 year left on his contract by then?

Comment #14The only way Mike Ashley is paying £16.5m for Rondon is if Rondon agrees to giving his wages up and instead working in a sports direct store for free for a year and only goes out in public wearing a full sports direct tracky whilst holding a sports direct mug up in the air 24/7 whilst screaming sports direct at the top of his voice 24/7 (this includes whilst he’s working in sports direct). In other words it’s not happening is it unless Solomon doesn’t mind selling Kangol polo’s and Donnay socks allday.
Mucky Mike probably moaned about loaning in a 28 year old never mind parting with £16.5m worth of actual money for a 29 year old.

Comment #16I think we’re talking £20m plus as I think he’s going to push on now and be a decent player, probably down to Rafa as he manages to squeeze the best out of these sort of players. If anyone needs an example of this look at Diame the second half of last season.

It won’t be a case of Ashley buying Rondon to keep Rafa at Newcastle if Rafa wants Rondon ..and too appease ..why , ? because there is no buy option with Rondons loan agreement and if West Brom want him back it’s out of Ashley’s hands .
If West Brom are promoted they would want a proven Premier league striker ..they got one in Rondon.
It’s catch 22, If he does well for us then his value goes up and WBA will have a negotiable asset on their hands.. it’s intriguing with Gayle thrown into the mix.
Ashley will not give WBA £25 million for a near 30 year old player.

Comment #28Rob…and whosoever proffered an opinion on the waste of space Nike Ranger. Fair play.
I always thought to myself , give Nile a chance , he’s young , daft, and will find his way eventually
Then time after time I read from the south he was getting into trouble with the law.. never learned a thing I thought… and always found it strange when I seen him that his girlfriend walked twenty yards behind him with her arms folded as he swaggered along like Snoop Dawg.
Swinging a little bag on his finger as he moseyed along.
Wrong mentality .
