Newcastle have scouted the 23-year-old Polish international striker Krzysztof Piatek of Genoa this season
It’s his first season in the Italian League, and he has scored 13 goals in 13 games in all competitions for his club so far.
There are some big clubs like Chelsea interested in acquiring the in-form striker.
Newcastle’s best chance of signing him to the club is that he will play a lot of games on Tyneside; he may not get that at bigger clubs like Chelsea.
However, he has said that his ambition is to play in The Champions League and there doesn’t seem much hope that Newcastle can play in Europe’s top competition any time soon.
But Rafa Benitez will undoubtedly require that the club he manages in the future must be able to challenge for European competition.
Krzysztof Piatek – ambition is to play in the Champions League
The current lack of European competition at Newcastle could be a deal-breaker in our bid to sign Piatek in January,
But you never know.
This is what the striker told Corriere della Sera:
“I do feel a little like Christopher Columbus.”
“He set out on an adventure from Genoa and the dream of any young player coming here is to use it as the starting point for a step up to a big club.”
“If I continue this way, I could sign for a big club. My objective is to play in the Champions League.”
“I don’t come near him now, but I think one day I can reach the level of Robert Lewandowski.
“Genoa are a big club, but not among the strongest teams in Italy right now.
“It’s far easier to score goals at Real Madrid or Juventus.”
Piatek may be a bridge too far for Newcastle in January, but at least we seem to be going after some top players in January.
However, until we get a new owner in the ambitions of Newcastle United under Mike Ashley will remain limited.
That’s the sad thing.
What do you think?
