Alan Shearer has been one of Mike Ashley’s biggest critics ever since he managed Newcastle for eight games but was unable to save his hometown club from relegation back in May 2009.
Alan has his regular article out on the betting site Coral and thinks it’s typical of Ashley to put up what essentially is a smokescreen before the January transfer window.
Mike Ashley has done this all before about potentially selling Newcastle.
Alan Shearer – wary of ptential talkeover
Alan rates manager Rafa Benitez very highly and apart from the defeat by West Ham last Saturday, we have done well in the previous 6 games to get 11 points on the board.
That was after we had only 2 points after 9 games played.
🙁
This is some of what Alan wrote in his Coral article:
“I can’t get excited at all about the potential takeover at Newcastle. We have been there before and heard it all before.”
“It seems that these rumors always resurface around the January transfer window and it’s a bit like Groundhog Day to be honest,”
“That said, it is definitely much needed so I hope that this time there does end up being more substance behind the rumors.
“On the pitch, they have been putting together some much better results after a tricky start to the season,” he said.
“They came unstuck against West Ham but they bounced back with a good point at Everton, so overall there has been much more promise and that’s been great to see.”
What Newcastle have to do is to pick up as many wins as possible through the end of the year and by the end of January, we could well have a new owner.
Whether we get a new owner by January or not Rafa must be allowed to bring in his transfer targets next month.
That seems very possible to have a new owner in the next two months, but Alan and the fans are right to remain skeptical until it happens – given Ashley’s history.
Comments welcome.
Please help the needy at Christmas.
The website NEoffers.co.uk are running their Christmas campaign for the needy in the local Newcastle areas.,
Let’s see if we all can help more people in real need this Christmas and give people the greatest gift they will receive this year.
If you can do this it would be really appreciated – please give here.

That tweet from Shearer about Groundhog day
is days old – he probably regrets it now and won’t
be happy with Mark Douglas for dredging it back up
jib

Comment #3The cynics about this deal are quite right to say ‘we’ve been here before’. But, hey, one day Ashley will sell NUFC. It will happen sooner or later. It could be that this is the time.
I’m still excited about it until I hear otherwise.

The buyers seem to be in place and credible, Ashley has said a deal is closer than ever and he wants to sell. Hints from supporters groups suggest that they have had contact from potential buyers. Posters on here with previously proven connections to the club have suggested that something is happening.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not stupid, I also don’t have a memory like a sieve and I know we’ve been down this road before.
Surely, however, there’s room for hope that our purgatory under Ashley is coming to an end. As you say, it has to end at some point, this could well be the moment and until it’s proven false, I’ll cling to the hope like a limpet to a rock.

Comment #7I also disagree that the fan base is split. We’re all united in several things:
We want Ashley out
We want Rafa in (permanently)
We want the lads to continue to build on our recent good form
We want our club to be successful and a source of pride
The one thing some of us disagree on is how we go about achieving that. If Ashley fails to deliver on his promises, I think that will unify the fans on that issue also. Ashley has to know this, as others have pointed out.
Would he make such a desperate gamble on two months’ worth of getting the protesters off his back, just to have them come back with fury and hugely increased numbers in February? It seems like a poor strategy to me and as someone says, why have a PR firm and not use it?

Comment #9I’m hopeful a deal will take place, but it is hope more than expectation. What does worry me is the brass neck the owner has and I wouldn’t put it past him to be trying his tricks again to keep the protests at bay, I think he is definitely brazen enough to try the ‘I’m in negotiations to sell the club’ trick again to quell the rage that is directed at him and the negative light that shines on him. Only time will tell if this is the real deal or not.
Another point in Almiron, given the MLS season ends around the next few weeks I had always thought that this deal will be a loan (with possible option to buy) as Atlanta are in their off season, it suits both parties by putting Almiron in the shop window in Europe to maximise his price if he succeeds, it negates the risk of having an expensive commodity on the books if we are relegated and it’s a way of getting a potential top player in whilst the club (if the buying rumours are true) goes through the motions of a sale without Ashley having cough up the expense for something he has no interest in (ie. NUFC as a whole).
