Rafa – I Am Still A Young Manager And Want To Improve Every Day

Rafa Benitez has been on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek.

And we get a closer look at the man who is driven to succeed in football management.

Rafa has had a terrific career so far, and even though he has not been supported financially by Mike Ashley he has done so well on Tyneside.

To keep Newcastle in the Premier League is no mean feat with Mike Ashley still the owner.

We hope that will all change soon so that Rafa will stay at the club under new owners and he will be given the finances to build a top team.

Rafa Benitez – talking to Marco Silva last Wednesday

That’s what we’ve been hoping for since he arrived at the club on Friday, March 11th, 2016, to great fanfare.

This is some of what Rafa told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek:

“We like to keep updated all of the time.”

“I have good staff, always I try to bring someone younger than me, which is not difficult now, to help.”

“But the main thing is the passion that we have. I still think I am a young manager and I want to keep improving every day.”

“I am still a young manager but society has changed. With social networks, you need to know and use Instagram and Twitter or if not me, the players do and my family.”

“My daughter is always saying you are too old, but you have to keep updated.”

Rafa’s passion for the game rubs off on his players and notice he wants to improve every day.

There’s no limit to how good you can become in your profession if you have an attitude and character like Rafa Benitez – and the drive to succeed.

He’s not only an excellent manager but also a terrific person and perfect for Newcastle United.

Catchy we have got a few good players but in the premium League you need excellent players and good back ups, like most teams in the league who improve their squad while we never push on from lack of investment.

i think super obsessive catchy will only ever be happy when people have a go at Rafa. Otherwise he seems pretty redundant and just sounds like a spiteful little biatch who the other children won’t play with. Was never here when we won 3 on the spin. How odd. Imagine though, Catchy wanted / s in no particular order OGS, MClaren and Martin O’Neil. Cue me now being called a retard in catchy’s own inimitable charming way.

I have said he spent a lot of money, and the only players i would not have bought were Joselu, Murphy and Atsu, as i thought they were either not good enough or we had better.

to many on here judge our players by price, and say our net spend means we bought crap. I only look at ability.

i dont and never have rated Lascelles, not as a footballer or captain, he is great though at talking to the press, but his positioning is poor, and his passing is terrible, esp for some of our fans to rate him at england level.

i think its an important poll that Ed is running about the CB, i have Lascelles on par with Clarke, behind Ferandez, Schar and Lejeune, but dont see Lascelles ever being dropped.

Im not a fan of perez in the no 10 role, but i think he is not a bad striker, but i wouldn’t say he is a 15 goal a year striker either.

most of all i dislike the poor football we play, i struggle to watch it, i dont understand why anyone defends it when they slated others for less

And who do you suggest we get in to replace Rafa then? Our performances in most games have deserved wins or atleast draws and the only time I can remember us being really outplayed this season and losing was against Leicester. Not many teams with our net spend would push City like we did (Look at Cardiff’s etc result at city for example), should’ve got 3 points at Chelsea, Man United (robbed by refs), totally outplay Arsenal until a forced defensive change, match Spurs for 90 Mins, beat 2 clubs in the top 7 back to back. For Me and probably most Newcastle fans, Rafa has his tactics spot on considering the conditions he’s forced to operate in. As I’ve said numerous times, our performances have been a lot better than results suggest and by My calculation we’ve been robbed of atleast 8-10 points this season which would have us on 21-23 and around the top 8.

Not bad going for a poor manager operating with his hands tied in double knots behind his back whilst making his team pass backwards is it.

Be careful what you wish for.

I think Rafa will learnt a lot managing Newcastle United
In the past he was able to buy who he wanted probably why there was so much churn ie Liverpool – I think he signed about 70 players while there.

He has had to work with and manage with ‘poorer’ plsys

Well Sunday was devastating. Only just managing to sit back up in bed because maybe going wasn’t the brightest thing to do. ?
That said, I enjoyed the game. Until the last minute at least.
We were certainly the better side for most of the first half and played some nice football, reacting really well to going a goal down by striking back quickly.
I have no doubt that with eleven men on the pitch we would’ve won that game comfortably.
The most annoying thing about the red card was their player committed the original foul, pulling back on Yeddlin’s arm, but Mike Dean was so far back he missed it.
Even so, we held on comfortably with ten men for most the second half and then should’ve won it with a blatant penalty, but we don’t get much luck do we!. Elbow – WALLOP. Didn’t even stop it for a head injury.
Mike ‘I have to be the most important person on display in every game or else’ Read, seeking Centre stage yet again. How did he miss that elbow?
Not often you hear Rafa have a go at the ref so says it all really.
Ideally Yeddlin should’ve let him go through and rely on Dubs to get him out the mire, but it was instinctive I suppose. We came back once, could’ve done so again IMHO – if they’d scored.
Thought my motm Rondon was immense again. If he had better support up front we’d be fine, let’s hope we can get someone in January – Santa Clause is real, right?. Gonna be a tough old week on my body but got time to recover before the next game at least.
The things we do for love eh? Starting to question my sanity though.

You know we’ve lost, the divvie’s back. Never a peep when we win, at least others post win lose or draw.
We don’t actually care who you would want. You’re not a member and it is a club – the clue is in the name actually.
We’ve all had managers we don’t like, but you get behind the team regardless. I think you actually believe you know more about the game than a football legend, which is actually hilarious. None of us do. That’s why he earns £6m a year and we don’t.
Get over it ffs. He can only work with what he has. Strange how when he’s backed he’s won virtually every trophy possible.
You hide when we win and gob off when we lose. You’re incredibly boring and predictable. And clueless to boot.

Haven’t slept more than three hours since Sunday anyway, surprised I’m functioning at all tbh.
Big mistake thinking I could make the game like. Still, not going to regret it now am I? Look a right Pillock if I do lmao! Dean, Dean Dean. I’ll get it right eventually.

Rob, as it’s not much further to Sunlun than the Toon from here, I’m thinking of going to that. See how I am obviously, but just the thought of being there if we beat them with wor bairns is just temptation beyond belief. 🙂
Wor lass might put her foot down and tbf I won’t go against her wishes, but it’s so hard to resist.
Sunday was too early after the fracture if I’m honest but I still enjoyed it, just the last couple of days, have been really hard. I’m actually in agony all over again.
Still, I knew it before I went so nobody to blame but myself. The older we get, the dafter we get and never let anybody tell ye different mate.

Jeez, I must say your devotion to the cause is commendable but maybe it’s time to get in touch with the club and make alternative arrangements to make attending SJP more comfortable. Under the circumstance, you might be able to persuade Miley boy to enable a change mid season.

You put the fickle, whining ‘fans’ to shame and your loyalty’s admirable

geordietom, I’m not sure it’s a false dawn – essentially it puts in place a structure to expand the Directors to a board of up to 10. This means that a potential buyer could put their own board in place as soon as they take over, which is a hurdle out of the way.

So, maybe not the end game we were hoping for, but maybe a step along the road.

I think the timing is interesting – the articles were signed in August, but only just submitted. The question here is ‘why now?’.

The Mag are notoriously negative and their writers don’t always consider all the angles, in my experience. You get a more balanced selection of viewpoints on here.

Does it matter who he wants? No manager worth his, salt will work for Ashley now which is why he probably realises if he doesn’t sell soon his investment will be worthless.
I despise Gareth Southgate, think he’s a weak yes man, but do I want England to win? Course I do. Nor do I bring it up every post about England.
I hated a couple of out managers, but did I stop going to games? No. Because I support the team and want them to do well. Hoping we lose so I could gloat never would cross my mind. Nor should it to any proper fan.
I’m not the biggest fan of Perez but was delighted he scored on Sunday. Its not about individuals it’s about the team. So you don’t like Rafa. Who’d have thought it, never heard you day so before, but you can still get behind the team and stop gloating when we lose. It’s beyond childish.
We won’t get a better manager in most of our lifetime and keeping us up last season was a minor miracle, doing so again will be a major one.
We can’t all have what we want out of life and only children sulk when they can’t. Put your personal animosity aside for the sake of the team and people can then talk to you on a sensible level. No wonder other fans, call us entitled. Most clubs would swap Rafa at the drop of a hat because they know that with adequate backing, he’ll win things. Only one man to blame for our troubles and it ain’t Rafa.
And in that I got to lie down again. 🙂 Love to say ‘teach me a lesson’ but I know it won’t. Later lads.

It actually looks like I was wrong – I had heard that the max cap had increased but it’s been a busy morning and I hadn’t had chance to check it out myself.

It looks like the max cap of ten was already in place, it’s the minimum number which has been reduced so Lee Charnley can run the business on his own in law as well as in fact.

That’s quite interesting in itself, though.

Still, as before the question remains ‘why now?’.
