The Newcastle U21 side went down 4-0 at Sunderland last night after the lads had done well to hold Sunderland to 0-0 at half time.
But it was lack of concentration and sloppiness that lost the game for us last night – but the scoreline of 4-0 wasn’t an accurate representation of the game.
But that’s how it ended up.
Coach Ben Dawson says that some of the finer details had cost Newcastle in the Checkatrade Trophy game last night, but that his players will learn from that.
Our lads were effective in the first half, but lack of concentration and some defensive frailty cost Newcastle the game.
Coach Ben Dawson – in the dugout last night
This is what Dawson said after the game when asked if 4-0 was harsh:
“I think it was.” “We are disappointed with the first two goals, they were a little bit scrappy and we paid the price for not paying attention to the details.”
“I thought we did well defending set plays in the first half.” “The two early goals (in the second half) kills the game a little bit.”
“The third goal is a great strike and you are always fighting at that point to get back in it.”
“I thought we more than matched them in the first half. We had the best chance of the game at that point.”
“If that goes in and you go in at 1-0 it changes things a bit. Key moments have made the difference tonight.”
“It was a great experience for the lads. The lads learned the finer details tonight. The higher you go up in football the better opposition you play.”
“The fine details make a difference. But we didn’t really do what we normally do enough.”
“We normally get down and play but we didn’t do it in the areas where we want to play.”
“It’s back to the drawing board. We will review the game and look at why we didn’t impose ourselves on the game as much as we wanted to.”
“Our fans never seemed to stop for 90 minutes and the lads really appreciated that and applauded them and said thank you at the end.”
The Newcastle fans at the game last night were fantastic, and they backed the boys big time.
Thinking of our first team – wonder if we can get anything at Stamford Bridge on Saturday?

Comment #43Our home form has been patchy at best since we were relegated, even when we won the championship there were dodgy games and results…this isnt something new….players look paralyzed with fear and scared shitless of losing, making a bad pass or having a shot that myt miss!….thy need to grow some bollicks,be brave and get stuck in,have shots, try passes…. they are desperately in of need confidence….not sure where thats ganna come from apart from the players themselves.

I think that might be asking for too much…. but we can dream.
I don’t even care about big money, just spend enough to compete around 6-10th in the league, looking to invest in the local area, treat the fans well, nothing more.

I think it depends on how desperate Ashley is to keep us in the premier league. Also whether the takeover is real or not and how close it is.
There are far too many permutations but I’d guarantee that Ashley will do anything he can to avoid having to spend anything.

Comment #48Good point Transfer. Exactly the way nufc should be. One of rafa’s qualities is bringing people together and stuff like his trip to the disabled(?) party when he had only just arrived was a great sign. Same with bringing in the cancer sufferer to training.

It’s all tied up in wallpaper mate. As for the team being low on confidence. It’s ok because Ashley is full of err……………….. ignorance.
Who needs confidence eh! 🙄

Comment #50Springy, I’m convinced we have money, it’s the desire to spend it that I’m unsure about.
Transfer Sage, yep, I think this is what Rafa expected also, with the money released that we made each year to gradually improve year on year until we were challenging for Europe within 4-6 years. It doesn’t sound so unreasonable, does it, given we’ve been there and done it within the lifetime and memory of most of the fans.

Comment #51I have a new theory about Ashley – and it still means nothing good for the club as a venture in competitive football and the fans. As we know Ashley wants NUFC as a marketing vehicle for SD. I think he has fully realized how to get maximum attention for the club from the media all whilst leading the fans on a merry path. He has realized that the media only cares about the Top 6 “Big Clubs” and the bottom 6 mired in the relegation battles. No one cares about the clubs in the middle. So since he has decided he doesn’t want to grow us to compete in the top 6, he is happy to have us in the bottom 6. He is even accepting of relegation so long as we are in the fight for promotion. Because, in the Champo, the only clubs that get media attention are those in the promotion and playoff battles. So even if we are a yoyo club it gets media exposure and the chance to be in the world’s richest game. Ge gets PL dollars when we are promoted and parachute payments for the season or two we are down letting him run the club on a shoestring. When we are drifting out of the media’s attention he comes up with the selling lie to get eyes back on him. It’s such a terribly cynical look at things but that is the only value Ashley can even get out of this for himself. The fans are left to twist on our hope that we will get better and all along Ashley is the only one who benefits. The sooner he is gone the better.

Comment #53There are two to three clubs in England that have interest but we have not advanced much.
With Newcastle, I spoke about the player’s salary, but the club needs to raise their offers with Atlanta if they want to get the player.
The above is a quote from Almiron’s agent.

Im not convinced at all tbh…..if and its a huge “if”,we were to say get almiron, like some rags are saying myt be close to happening (dont hold ya breath tho!! ) then al believe links to players but until then, every player we are linked with may as well be messi or ronaldo!….aint ganna happen!…get the feeling it’ll be the same shite as the summer links here, there and literally everywhere but nowt done….so either charnley is the most useless negotiator, and is so slow that he makes a sloth look like an energizer bunny…or there is nothing of substance, money wise.

Comment #55That very much sounds like a ‘come and get me’ and ‘stop fannying around’ from Almiron and his agent. It’s always been clear he fancies coming and working with Rafa, it’s time for Ashley to put his cock on the block and get it done.
Anyone confident of that?

Comment #70I try to stay our of all non-football discussion but I need to chime in.
Catchy – why did you think it was acceptable to use that homophobic term towards anyone whether they actually were gay or not?
I personally enjoy reading your opinion on Rafa and how the team plays – I rarely agree with what you are saying but it does add alternate viewpoints to the blog – but you too often go off the rails outside of football and say stuff like you addressed at Young Mag.
Personally I think you should apologize to Young Mag, or Mag P as it is now, and he wold probably accept it. And be mindful of what you say towards other posters in the future – and you aren’t the only one who needs to do that either. There are other anonymous keyboard warriors spewing personal crap here too. That’s just my opinion for what it’s worth.

Comment #71Appears we are not matching Atlantas’ valuation of Almiron.
If it is near/towards £24 million – I’ll eat my hat if the club cough up that amount.
In the event of not signing him I think it is very probable that reasons why will be forthcoming from Atlanta or Almirons agent.

If a consortium with real intent and big backing was in talks with Ashley (you would think) they would have got the deal done and dusted by now.
If they were really keen there is no way they would leave it so long into the transfer Window and cross their fingers we stay up
Or if they were 100% serious and had the money they would of sanctioned bids with a view of covering the costs when they take over / add to the bid
That’s if they were really serious and want to take the club forward
