When we finished 10th in the Premier League last May by thrashing Chelsea 3-0 at home, our fans were upbeat.
We had been fighting relegation in the first half of the season but had pulled away nicely and earned around £123M for that 10th place finish in the league.
We thought some excellent buys in the summer transfer window, and maybe we could improve on that 10th place finish, and we had some money to do that too.
At least we wouldn’t be fighting relegation this season.
Rafa Benitez – can he save us this season?
Mike Ashley didn’t attend one Newcastle game last season and ensured that Rafa had to again shop in the bargain basement last summer after he had done so well to guide us to 10th place.
Rafa was not allowed to bring in all the players he wanted and needed.
We are in much the same position today that we were a year ago after 21 games – although a little worse off.
Here’s how the last two seasons compare, and they are remarkably similar.
