MP Chi Onwurah Meets With Ashley – Some Confusing Statements In Times Interview

Newcastle Central Labour MP Chi Onwurah’s constituency includes St. James’ Park and she has been interviewed in the Times today.

She has been trying to talk to Mike Ashley about the running of Newcastle United for many years and finally got an invitation to meet the owner Mike Ashley last Saturday.

That probably means that Ashley will not be selling the club anytime soon and he may take the club off the market soon.

The invitation was for a meeting with Mike Ashley and some of his people before the game last Saturday when we hammered Cardiff City 3-0: our best win of the season.

There will soon be a parliamentary debate in the House of Commons about the owner’s running of the Newcastle United and his unwillingness to invest in the club.

Onwurah has said she was not convinced by Ashley’s explanation of why he will not invest in the club.

This is some of what Chi Onwurah has said in the Times today:

“It’s clear he feels very strongly in his own defense, so it’s not a matter of indifference to him that he’s seen as the cause of Newcastle’s malaise as well as seen as undermining the city and asset-stripping the club – that matters to him.”

“He and the people around him think he’s the victim of misrepresentation, that he hasn’t taken any money out of the club.”

“We disagreed strongly.” “He didn’t convince me.”

“Most worrying, in my view, is that he has no intention of investing significantly into the club.”

“He said to me at one point, ‘Would you put all your money into it?’”

“But this isn’t just any company, it’s a huge part of our city.”

“I would have recognized I was buying a cultural asset that required investment.”

“One of his people said, ‘But he has invested’.” “Buying the club wasn’t an investment, it was buying something.”

“Giving the club loans isn’t investment.”

“Mr. Ashley said the club can only spend what it generates but, as I’ll say in the debate, that is a form of austerity economics — a club needs investment to reach its potential.”

There are some confusing statements from Chi Onwurah.

What we need Mike Ashley to do is to invest the club’s money that it generates as a business.

We really should not be talking about Ashley’s own money, and he has already invested some of his own money into the club.

That’s to the tune of about 125M over the years at zero interest rate to the club.

It’s the club’s money he’s unwilling to invest – that’s the real problem here.

And if Newcastle suddenly pays Ashley £125M to settle the loan that’s not the owner taking money out of the club;  it’s Newcastle United FC paying off what they owe to the owner.

We shouldn’t be confusing Mike Ashley’s own money and the club’s finances; the detailed financial accounts of which come out at the end of every fiscal year.

Ashley has said he will give every last penny the club generates to Rafa.

If he did that we could have had a good team by now.

The point is he hasn’t done that.

As the world’s 19th richest club last season – based on revenues generated of £178.5M – we should be able to invest decent money in buying some good players.

Other clubs with less money seem to be able to do that.

Comments welcome.

We need to start planning action very soon. Now after having given it more thought I really think that Lesh’s mob will be the best option to stage a protest down at Shirebrook.

Firstly they don’t wash or work, they are used to sitting around for days on end doing very little and not getting bored, they are very stubborn and single minded and hopefully won’t be too easily discouraged. Also they will quite happily accept free handouts in order to survive. Ideal for a prolonged sit in down at Shyte Direct HQ.

As someones taken money out of the club,if hes so sure its not him then i say theses been a gigantic theft taken place

Im sure he would co operate with an investigation into the theft of the money

What’s this about Carver robbing the safe – disgraceful behaviour.
I demand an investigation into this matter.

Seems like a case our very own highly praised/lauded blog detectives/investigative journalists can get into.
A good case for them to investigate – well alright they might still be busy with the Companies House case but they should be able to find the culprit.

Mmmmm on second thoughts probably not.

I hope MP Chi Onwurah does not get side tracked with the subject of Turdboat investing his own money into the club. The real issue is the ability of the club to utilise its own finances.

AshLie has said more than once, that we can spend every penny the club generates. He also said in one of his SSN interveiws…

“All I can say is, there is a bank account. When you have emptied it, it’s empty. Don’t come crying to me for more money.”

Is there evidence of money even hitting this “bank account” we’ve emptied??? He’s full of bulls**t, he’d flog his own family if he could to fund his next toy.

On the debate tonight, I’m sure Chi has done her homework. This is a massive opportunity and one she won’t want to let herself or her fellow fans down (no pressure, Chi)

I’ve known a number of engineers and they tend to fall into two camps – one with very tidy minds, focussed on a goal and determined to get there no matter what. The others are more easily distracted, tend to flit between projects and give bits of attention to many different things simultaneously.

While the former tend to be more efficient, the latter tend to be more creative. Different types of intelligence, really, you don’t get a dim witted engineer. I think this is probably what Jib was alluding to.

That spending spree coincided with the largest protests against him that were done by the fans after the disaster that was Carver!

Can’t remember what game it was but they had Sky talking about the fans were fed up and then big Mikey done his interview against West Ham!

80 million odd to placate the fans ?!?

Could be the plan Rafa goes the fans are upset heavily but we get another “coach” in who gets 100 million worth of players chucked at him so the protests die down again as fans want to give the new guy and players a chance…….

When I was younger I will always remember my parents telling me the rythme ” One for Sorrow ”
For those that maybe dont know it, its about seeing Magpies and the numbers they represent.

One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, Never to be told. Eight for a wish, Nine for a kiss, Ten for a bird, You must not miss.
There are some variations to the nursery rythme but this was the one they told me.

Here’s another version thats more fitting to our club which was written back in the 1800’s, maybe they knew Ashley was coming.

One for sorrow, ( How the Fans Feel ) Two for Mirth, ( Yes, we would like to be Happy ) Three for a wedding ( The marriage to Ashley needs to be over ) Four for birth, ( Let us start fresh MA )
Five for silver ( The lining we seem to never see ) Six for gold ( Ashley’s stockpile of the clubs money ) Seven for a secret ( Everyone bidding on NUFC is employed or has been given financial monetary rewards by Mike Ashley )Not to be told; Eight for heaven, ( Sir Bobby / Jackie ) Nine for Hell, ( Where most Newcastle Fans feel they are in ) and last but no means least And Ten for the Devil’s own self ( As I said, maybe they knew Mike Ashley was coming to our club )

    Lindisfarne,

‘..The real issue is the ability of the club to utilise its own finances.’

I’m assuming, especially given the recent report of the richest clubs, that the club has generated sufficient money to spend on permanent transfers, so why nothing so far ?

I think Ashley is draining the club of as much money as possible and then trying to sell it for as much as possible.

I still believe that if he doesn’t sell before the end of this transfer window, he is going to be persona non grata in Newcastle for the rest of his life

Rather predictable failure over Martins. Either Charnley is under ”blocking” instruction or just the worst negotiator ever.

    Posada

I think it was Natwest futures ash lost 300M in, not Halifax.

The thing regarding Ash’s loan to the club is that Ash is NUFC, so effectvely he’d just be paying himself.

If Ashley’s quote to Chi is ”would you put your own money in ?”, her retort should have been ”’where’s the club’s money?” and what about 12 years ”free advertising”. Then again Ash effectively is the club so he has us by the proverbials every which way. If Chi’s figures are unresearched and on a par with Diane Abbot then god help us.

    Munster

I know you give Rafa a hard time about his odd transfer failure, ie Lazaar at 1.5M, but anyone who can get Fernandez, Shar and Ki for under 10M, Lejeune for 8.7M, Dubravka for 3.5M and Rondon on a 2M loan is a genius. Ironically he is the best manager Ash could ever wish for.

Finally can people really not spell LOSE instead of LOOSE !!!! Drives me mad.

Fella like others I am scratching my napper trying to work out just what the heck this idiot is doing….Anything at all that can justify this huge ‘cash under the mattress ‘ issue.

It would be typical, Rafa to walk (the best we have had since SBR) and an a yes man to come in who is given ££££££ and fail.

Ash just doesn’t want to be second fiddle to anyone in one of his ‘companies’….Has to be the main man and Rafa is ‘Bigger ‘ than he is.
There lies the problem I think.

    Cheers fella

That could happen. What I don’t get is why he would allow a situation where we’re all up in arms in the first place. Surely the protests would be unnecessary if he would just allow the club and Rafa to spend the money available on players Rafa wants.

I’m absolutely certain the bloke is a sociopath.
