It’s looking like Newcastle will only bring in two players in this January transfer window with just less than an hour to go in this window.
They are Atlanta playmaker Miguel Almiron permanently on a record £20.5M deal and Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca on a loan deal until the end of the season with an option to buy him in the summer.
Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca – in on loan
It looks like the other two potential loan deals for 29-year-old holding midfielder Andreas Samaris of Benfica and 24-year-old left-winger Anthony Limbombe of Nantes will not be completed.
With Samaris not coming in Isaac Hayden will stay at Newcastle through the end of the season.

Here’s what it looks like at the moment assuming the loan deals for Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons go through.

Comment #3Looks like the bare minimum required to me frankly, and Ashley still pruning for a sale, which can’t happen soon enough.

Comment #4It’ll be interesting to see how Sorensen does at Blackpool for the rest of the season. I really hope he gets some quality time on the pitch for them and not the odd few minutes at the end of each game.

Comment #5Taking a bit of a chance letting Murphy go without bringing in a replacement. I know he didn’t get much action in the first team but he was still an extra body on standby to cover for possible injuries.

Comment #6A couple of days ago it was “Another window with NO signings”, now it’s “ONLY two signings”. The glass is always no better than half empty for some. Get real, if we’re better off at the end of January, then it’s been a good window. True, it could have been better, so, suit yourself – has it been a good window, or has it not been?

Comment #7If Michy signs for Palace I’d love to see how much he’s on. Pretty sure I read somewhere it could be 160k a week. Would that unsettle others in the team, especially if he ends up not pulling his weight? Taking a bit of a chance, but I suppose you don’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a very expensive ticket 🙂

Comment #89 – I’m over the moon getting Almiron and it’s nice that we have a backup for Dummett now. Of course I would have liked to see a striker and winger coming in too, but supporters shouldn’t expect too much from Ashley. I’m still shocked he shelled out for Almiron.

Comment #9Murphy is the only first team player out, and two first team in, so the balance and depth is improved. Any one of Ritchie, Atsu, Kenedy, Perez, Almiron and even Barreca can do the job at least as well as Murphy did, on form anyway. I like Murphy, but it hasn’t worked out, and he’s not going to be missed.

Comment #10One swallow doesn’t make a summer….
Or in our case 2 swallows. Especially after YEARS of under investment and player sales.
Are we happy? yes. Should the 19th richest club in world football do better? most definitely.

Comment #11Newcastle United have had a bid rejected by Lille for 19-year-old defensive midfielder Boubakary Soumaré
Why leave it to the last minute? Just to save a few weeks wages – really cant be that straightforward
We have know that Hayden wants to leave so why wait to get in a replacement and then sell him?

Comment #12Rafa probably isn’t best pleased, not sure about that winger guy and how serious it was but nothing has come of it, Samarias deal didn’t work and apparently we had a flight and medical booked for today for an unknown prem striker that broke down.

Comment #14Would it be fair to say that Ashley has given Rafa just enough over the last three years, and squeezed every penny out of his salary, to get just what Ashley wants out of him, and he’s done the same to the club. It would have been a travesty to do any less this window, and he’d have been a mug to do any less.

Comment #15I suppose two cracking signings are better than none which most of us expected but I still think that not getting a striker in is really playing with fire. An injury to Rondon and we’re in the clarts. Incidentally he might not be so pleased either at the odd report that we don’t want to sign him permanently because “he’s too old”.
Rondon IS our attack at the moment and is playing out of his skin and giving everything for the cause.
The thought of Joselu upfront for a run of games brings me out in a cold sweat.

Comment #16So do we think Barreca is a starter or Ritchie will continue there? Can’t see Ritchie getting dropped, possibly he will play in the Perez position with Almiron in the Atsu position?

Comment #17Agreed, we’ve brought in two good young lads in the right positions, but if Rondon gets injured, Rafa needs to find a serviceable attack without an EPL quality target man, which is crucial to the way he sets us up. He’d probably end up having to reset the game plan and play Muto and Perez up top and Almiron in behind, which is risky.
Something like…..
……………………..Dubravka..
Yedlin….Schar….Lascelles…Lejeune…Barreca.
…………………Diame…Ki/Shelvey..
……………………….Almiron.
……………..Perez…………..Muto..
Rondon is a massive player for us.

Comment #18A hope almiron is the key to a few surprising years on Tyneside like.
I think we need to be patient but i hope he hits the ground running.
Would just love to have a south american mystro running riot for the toon.
I hope he becomes our star key player. Our marhez for the foxes.

Comment #19I cant believe ritchie gets stick by some people like. Gives his all for the toon and you cant really say hes crap.
Good squad player and during his time at the club has given 100 percent. Has a kevin nolan vibe about him.
They are the type of players you want in your club.

Why does Ashley leave bids until the last minute on the last day of the window? To make sure the probably low bids aren’t accepted.

i wonder if Murphy out means that Rafa sees either almiron or muto capable as back up on the wings

Of course, it’ll have been the flight that caused the problem – do you expect a plane to fly without a pilot that Ashley wouldn’t pay enough for?

Comment #29Surprised that we haven’t brought in another winger to replace Murphy. Light on wingers now both he and Aarons gone. Should perhaps have tried to sign Rondon permanently and swopped him g for Murphy. Could have brought in another loan player up front or midfield. Badly need Shelvey , Ki and Diame back in Midfield ASAP. Mig won’t be up to speed for several weeks.
Ashley has again pruned the wage bill.

Comment #33In my opinion NUFC don’t spend £17M (pre add ons) on Miggy to play him on the wing. You pay that price and play him where he is most effective. the #10 role.

Comment #35As he’s been mentioned by poster or posters above, I think it’s worth pointing out I don’t imagine we’ll be seeing very much of young Mr Kenedy on the pitch in future. Has talent, has lost interest, is as much willing to scrap it out for NUFC as he would be to litter-pick SJP after a match.

Comment #37Happy enough with the window now that we finally got Almiron. We were just missing that number 10 imo and we’ve now got that and cover for Dummett aswell so cant moan. That being said, although I’m glad Murphy went to West Brom which is a brilliant move for his development, I do think we should’ve got a replacement but we have Ritchie, Atsu, Kenedy and Perez or Muto could comfortably play out wide if needed.
Transfer record smashed finally and that can only be seen as a positive for the club.
Also I’m happy for Lazaar, Sheff Wednesday is a great loan move for him and I really hope he does well there. We didn’t get to see enough of him as he looked a real talent before we signed him.

Comment #38Dummett and Ritchie are top lads, but they’ll surely struggle to get a start if Almiron and Barreca are as hoped. Atsu too. Good situation though to have decent players dropping down the pecking order. Dummett and Ritchie are certainly very still useful.

Comment #409, i believe that now that we have that extra bit of quality in the team, he will help in the overall confidence of the players who haven’t been up to scratch. Maybe Kennedy is the type of player that isn’t designed to be the big star of the team and needs the spotlight taken off him, If that’s the case then I am expecting all our attacking players to benefit with his signing.
Fingers crossed eh ?
