Rafa seemed pleased after the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham that his team had played well.
And like the last game against Man City last Tuesday night, our players played with intensity, skill, and passion.
We also defended well and while the goal conceded on Tuesday was a shock after 25 seconds the goal today was a shock because it was a bad mistake from goalkeeper Dubravka.
The Slovakian goalkeeper has played well for us last year but he’s not made two shocking mistakes this year against Tottenham today and at home to Manchester United in early January.
Rafa Benitez – at Wembley today
Dubravka cannot let these mistakes creep into his game and it may be a lack of concentration that is the problem.
But Rafa seemed pleased with the Newcastle performance should have done better for the goal:
“We did well for a while in the first half. We had chances in the second half and after that they were pushing and pushing and then you have to be a bit better on the ball to ensure that you go through.”
“They were pushing us really hard and we were defending well. The problem for us is conceding this kind of goal. It is one we could have avoided.”
“You have to give credit to Tottenham, they are a very good team.”
“When they talk about the players they don’t have through injuries you have to laugh a little bit because they have some of the best players in England, everyone is an international and you see anyone who can make a difference.”
“The problem for us is we have to carry on with the intensity, the tempo and defending and going forward. It was not easy for us.”
You have to give credit to Son, the shot was a good one. But Dubravka could have done better. It is not just one mistake that we have to analyze it is overall.”
“The performance was fine. We hit the post in the second half and that could be the difference for us. It’s a pity that we lost 1-0 with this kind of goal.”
We got 3 points out of the two games with Manchester City and Tottenham – we would have taken that in a New York minute last Monday.
