Is Paul Merson Warming To Newcastle?

Paul Merson got the result right at Wembley last Saturday when he predicted a 1-0 win for Tottenham but it was a close game and coming after Newcastle had shocked the Premier League with a 2-1 win at home to Manchester City.

A performance and result to remember for Newcastle fans, especially when we were 1-0 down after just 25 seconds – or was it 24 seconds?

After their 2-0 win at Everton last night Manchester City are back on top of the Premier League on goal difference above the Reds, but Liverpool have a game in hand.

Paul Merson earlier this season – when told Newcastle were a good side

Here’s what Paul has said about our game on Monday night at Molineux:

“Rafa Benitez is tactically very good, he goes under the radar, but tactically he is probably the best in the Premier League.”

“He gets results against Man City, so they will be hard to beat.”

“Wolves, though, struggle against teams that do not come out against them and they get frustrated – they lost at home at a canter to the bottom club, Huddersfield, so this could be a difficult game for them.”

Benitez will have seen that and will not open up against them – if this turned into a ‘you have a shot, we have a shot’ match, I would dread to think what the score would be.”

“They will be five at the back, will not move and they will wait for a set play from Matt Ritchie, who is good at them, a little bit of guile.”

“And I could see them getting something from this game.

Prediction: 1-1

It looks like that fabulous 2-1 win over big spenders Manchester City – a tactical masterpiece from Rafa Benitez – has convinced Paul Merson that we may now be (a lot) better than he once thought.

If we can get anything out of this game on Monday it will be a good result for us.

Newcastle United’s ticket prices have been consistently amongst the highest in the Premier League, for those clubs outside the top six, although even most Manchester City fans for example pay less than their Newcastle equivalents.

Last summer (2018) saw one of the most outrageous Mike Ashley acts yet.

At the same time as insisting on a £20m+ profit in the transfer market, the NUFC owner also put up the prices in all four stands at St James Park.

For me almiron needs quick minded players around him to give him the ball at pace and then move to receive the ball, perez needs to quicken his game and not hold the ball as long…same can be said for kenedy…they both hold on to the ball far to long and try to much and end up gettin swamped by players and losing it,ano its just coz they are under pressure to perform and we are all desperate for points….the team as a whole need to work in there delivery and the speed of delivery….it seems lime we always take an extra touch or 2 instead of gettin the ball in early….again this could be down to confidence or fear of not putting a goid ball in….this team plays with so much fear its unbelievable…. hopefully the new signings can alleviate some if the pressure, fear and lack of confidence for the rest of the season.

I think it gets blown out of proportion about Merson not liking Newcastle to be honest !

He’s just a wind up merchant and a lot of Toon fans seem to take offense really easy actually pretty easy for him he says something a bit daft and folk go mental !

He’s just a bit clueless in general about football teams

I often wonder if part of that is down to Rafa’s safety first approach where losing possession in areas can leave us exposed to counter attacks ?

We seem to hoof it rather than take the risky pass to give the team time to settle back into position as well wondering if that is sometimes a tactic

Although to be fair to Perez and Kennedy they are often double or triple marked but maybe Almiron and Barreca as other passing options it could increase our fluidity in the final 3rd

Ed said….. ‘Rafa is always several steps ahead of Ashley who doesn’t seem to understand that building a good team in the Premier League is where the money really lies.’

Yes, Mikey boy won’t see that investing can bring big rewards – Liverpool announce a profit of £106m for the year 2017/ 18.

Is Paul Merson Warming To Newcastle?
Yes ed I believe he is .
Could it be after extensive research he has figured out the price of a pint is significantly less ?

U could be ryt, maybe it is the defensive mindedness, perez is an instinctive player…if he has time to think or holds on to it to long he will make the wrong choice…when he flicks and moves or makes the quick pass he creates chances, same when he’s in front of goal,in the spurs game passed when he was on the 6yd line instead of putting his foot thru it…but that can be said about a lot of our players, probs confidence again…. they all need to get a ruthless streak….im not tearing perez a new one coz i hate the lad,i dont ..just if he strengthened some parts of his game he could be a real asset to the club and bag himself a few more goals a season….but its easy to say that from where im sitting i spose! Lol

He’s not exactly singing our praises Ed.

I’ll go a step further, because we didn’t deserve to lose the first game.

Toon22 – Although you’ll call me a shill it has to be said for balance that a lot of fans are on the fixed price DD scheme and in fact paying the same as in the Championship. I’m not sure how many but let’s say about 25000 which is going to bring the average crashing down. This is not in support of Ashley but being from a mathematical background I hate seeing stats misrepresented!

Kind of hoping Almiron will actually be good for Perez as you say hes at his best when he does things first time like little flicks and and first time shots with Almiron to play 1 – 2s with and supply passes for quick shots it could certainly work!

Also means Perez can be in the box to finish chances rather than try to create them as well

We need to consistently add players of quality to our squad. Not bodies, quality.
Weve plugged holes that were desperately needed plugging.
Hopefully we can make it through this season with perez supplying cover for almiron and rondon when neded.
Going to be an expensive summer as if we don’t sign Rondon up (which hell cost a fair wedge still) we are going to have to buy 2 new strikers.
To keep Rafa in the summer deals need to be done straight away, im not making excuses up for not signing players early in winter transfer but do you really want to show your cards early. We sign almiron gain advantage to other teams early in the window they might just think shit toon have added well equal or better.
Gives other teams no time to react.
Not seen him play but he seems humble, it was mentioned earlier we need to give miggy time.
Not judge to quick, hopefully he just sets us alight straight away anyway and theres no need to critise.
Its all on ashley again now. Either sell up or back the club.

Affordable football my ar$e, That ten year deal was a cynical ploy to get the fans onside while he served up dross. I’m alright Jack my ticket is cheaper. It just ensured the majority of those that took it would keep renewing despite his shenanigans.

If we do smart recruitment we can bridge the gap to the likes of Leicester , Everton etc which is got to be the next phase in our progression but its when we fanny about with deals that’s what makes it difficult!

Rafa has managed to get quality defenders for quality prices and maybe bargains like that are there to be had in attack but you just need to be willing to move quickly the likes of that Valon Berisha he went to Lazio for like 7 million! Rafa was rumoured to have been a big fan before he got the move so not sure why we weren’t all over that deal

Completely off-topic but I don’t know if anyone can answer this…I live in New York and I want to buy tickets for the home game against Everton. The last match my wife and I went to (at St James) was in 2012 and we had to become members to get tickets, but we think this might have changed? Online sale is Feb 14th, general sale the week after.
Any helpful advice very appreciated, and perhaps U.S based Toon fans will know!

Going on from a supporter trying to get answers from Junior Tubbs – for me the greatest mystery is why hasn’t anyone managed to collar Kenyon and put a few questions to him.

He hasn’t been seen on planet earth for at least 6 months.
All we had been fed is a rather dodgy letter released by Mr Tubbs.

    Where is Kenyon.

    Simple really
Kenyon’s non appearance is because the NDA
    is still in force
The NDA is still in force because the sale is still
    Season’s end methinks

Kenyon is trussed up like a turkey in the basement of a boarded up house in Jesmond.

“How long you been here, Amanda?”

“Here let me get that gag off….”

“Aaahhh at last – I’ve been here at least a year – that body in the corner is someone called Cook I think. Poor bloke. ”

“Amanda – is that curry sauce in your hair?…”

I just caught the video Bambam’s posted; in relation to Charnley being questioned about advertising.

Charnley’s silence confirmed suspicions in my estimation. It’s a bit different being asked questions that aren’t cherry picked.

Jail – re the DD deal you look at it from a very cynical point of view. For fans like BobbyBee who would go whatever it has been quite a saving and paying monthly is a hell of a lot easier than stumping up in one lump.
