Rafa To Bring Shelvey Back Only When He’s 100% Fit – Has Other Options

Jonjo Shelvey was one of two players who was not in the Newcastle squad for yesterday’s game along with Ciaran Clark.

It seems the thigh injury turned worse when Jonjo insisted on playing a couple of months ago when he was not 100% fit and he paid the price for his enthusiasm to play for Newcastle as much as possible.

Rafa has said before that sometimes you have to manage Jonjo becasue he always wants to play.

But with Sean Longstaff playing so well, Rafa has more time to ensure Jonjo is completely fit and the thigh doesn’t become a long term injury concern for the England International.

Ki and Mo Diame are both getting match practice and Isaac Hayden is playing his best football at Newcastle right now.

Jonjo Shelvey – relaxing in Murcia, Spain last week

Longstaff and Hayden have looked an excellent young combination for Newcastle in central midfield over the last several games.

This is what the manager has said about Shelvey – as reported in the Chronicle today:

“He is pushing – the player wants to play.”

“But sometimes when you have other options it is about managing him, being careful and making sure is fit for the rest of the season.”

The only sub not to play in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow was Martin Dubravka, as Rafa took a closer look at Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman and both looked competent.

We expect Martin to start in goal for us against Huddersfield Town next Saturday afternoon.

Comments welcome.

Having to put poor old Ed to additional work must be unnecessarily stressful to sort out someone who rather obviously hacked my account after a comment was made.

I’m near Llandudno. I was leaning towards Swansea but will probably end up doing the switcheroo and missing each goal by 10 secs

At last – a reason to have all those regional BBC One and BBC Two channels on freesat !!!. It means I can actually choose which match to watch. Been waiting 4 years to understand why they bother repeating the regional channels

Our system woukd be internationally recognised to be better than yours Jail. Certainly on the the last radio discussion i heard, and there was a UK contributor on it. That said, both countries awful at foreign languages. Jib, yes we do Irish language right through school but it’s not as vibrant as, say, Welsh. My daughter is in an all irish speaking secondary school.
