Rafa Benitez Still Keen On Signing French Forward

French newspaper L’Equipe are reporting that Newcastle were one of the clubs last month who tried to persuade Lyon forward Martin Terrier to move to Tyneside.

We had been linked with the Lyon player for some months, and it looks like he was one of the players Rafa wanted last month.

The other Premier League team interested in the player were Fulham, but Terrier seems to be happy at Lyon and wants to continue playing in the French League.

The 21-year-old can play as a number 10, and he has played 5 times for the Lyon first team so far.

French U21 forward Martin Terrier

Terrier moved to Lyon in January of last year from Lille for 11M – and Lyon loaned him straight back to Strasbourg at that time.

L’Equipe are reporting that a number of clubs, including Newcastle, were interested in signing the 21-year-old last month.

Terrier’s agent is Paul Schianchi, and he said his client wants to succeed in France:

“The goal is to succeed in Lyon. He is very well integrated in the group, in the city.”

The Newcastle manager wants five new players brought into Newcastle this summer if the Spanish manager decides to stay on at the club past June.

It will be interesting to see if Rafa makes another attempt to sign Terrier this summer.

He has played 11 times for the France U21 team with 7 goals.

Not happening Ed. Not now, not ever and certainly not before the fat man gets on his bike.

Slowly, methodically Rafa is building up selection headaches for himself! Building from the back he first brought in Matt Sels (didn’t work out) and then Dubravka to create more competition at the keeper position. He brought in Lejeune and eventually Schar and Fernandez to add to Lascelles and Clark in central defense, so that we now have 5 very solid CBs. Now he has selection headaches in central midfield with LongSean, Hayden, Ki, Mo and Jonjo! And now with Baracca adding competition for Dummett at LB and Ritchie at LWB and Almiron as an upgrade for Atsu and/or Perez…

It is El Proyecto coming about on a shoestring budget, painstakingly strengthening the club from back to front and inside out! One might think Senior Benítez knows his business well! 😉

    Rob,
Exactly right! Rafa is not asking for “Arab oil” type money. Just let him have “every penny” that the club generates, without haggling or back stabbing and living within the clubs own resources Rafa will take the club well into the top half of the table! It boggles the mind that Ashley can’t seem to see this!

    chicousa,
Unfortunately the way the club is run if Lejuene hadn’t of been injured we wouldn’t have Fernandez here and Clarke would have been here until his contract run out, hopefully we’ll see Clarke depart to a good Champo side he’ll help get promoted next season.

    Jail,
True about Fernandez deal coming about due to Lejeune injury. Also due to injury or absences Ki, Schar and LongSean have all come into the core of the team. Luck, both good and bad, is always a factor. It is what Rafa has done in those circumstances that impresses!

chico, I think we’d all be happy with top half of the table stability guaranteed, with the possibility that if we recruit well and hit on a hot streak, we could challenge for Europe and go on a cup run.

It’s hardly delusional to think that is within our grasp if the club was run properly and professionally. We’re not asking for the World, after all, just a bit of ambition to match the club’s status as one of the largest global earners.

    @Jail

I think we seem to be slowly evolving into a 3 CB team it protects us against the bigger teams and could potentially allow us to be more deadly in attack if we get some more players in

So not sure I would get rid of Clarke as we would need lots of CB to cover the season !

Rondon is exactly the type of striker that Everton need !!

This season has worked out well for Rondon hes either going to stay with us next season or be getting a good move elsewhere !!

Be really annoying if he goes somewhere else we should be signing him and then also someone like Abraham or King someone with pace and can score goals !
