Rafa Explains Why Newcastle Are Now Winning – Next Test Is West Ham

Rafa Benitez must have been a very pleased man tonight having seen all the hard work he has done on the training ground with his players starting to pay off.

We now have four wins and 13 points from the last six games and if we can keep that up for the last 10 games we will beat last season’s total of 44 points.

But we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves either because last season we lost four of the last five games.

But Rafa is adamant he will take one game at a time and do all he can to get the 3 points in every one of the final 10 games remaining for the season.

Sean Longstaff – scores his first goal in Premier League for Newcastle

This is what he said tonight in his press conference after the game:

“We have a message that is very clear: one game at a time. Why are we winning games now? Because everybody is doing what they have to do and everybody is focused just on the games.”

“And it’s what we have to do against West Ham.”

“I was not thinking too much about how many points we could be clear. Just carry on doing what we know we can do well.”

“We went to Spain and trained really well and we came back and are in the same situation. The players work hard and are keen to do the right things”

“They want to be solid as a team and be a threat.’

I said so many times when he (Longstaff was coming with us and training with us he was doing well.”

“He was lucky enough to make his debut sooner rather than later because of injuries but now he deserves to be in there.”

“A lot of positives we have a young, local lad playing well and scoring goals.”

“We know what we have to do and we try to do that. Atsu’s a very good player and he gives us different things. We know we have different things now with Almiron and that’s good for me.”

“We know he (Schar) is capable of doing that. On the ball, he is good, and now he is improving in defense and the understanding with the other players is getting better.”

I voted dubravka. Gripping balls out the sky like alan Carr at 30,000 feet. The whole team played quality though and everyone pulled their weight.

And I don’t know what all this dyche will feel hard done by with some of the decisions bollocks is all about. Ref missed a blatant red on longstaff, could have snapped his shin the filthy fcuk. Anyways Burnley are absolute dire to watch, you can tell dyche studied pulis, all he was missing was delap long throws to complete the look.

    Morning you lot.

Just watched the latter part of the game and the discussions with the pundits and Jake Humphrey is obviously a fan. Loved how he corrected Rachel Brown when she suggested Ash may think he doesn’t need to spend money given how the team are playing.

I think he was pushing Rafa re his contract more out of his own interests than because it’s his job to.

Martin Keown got it spot on re Longstaff compared to Rice, I am obviously very biased but Longstaff is the better player – I like Rice after watching him quite a few times, but Longstaff is the real deal – he also has Rafa as coach.

    Bring on the Hammers !

Isn’t it lovely to wake up after another win !

    Thanks Rafa

That was the last team we could do the double over
    (Huddersfield is the other)
There are a few teams we could do 4 points against
    yet.

On Almiron – he was making a lot of runs that were not being picked out by our players and for some reason Richie does not seem to want to pass to him – I’m not sure if this would be apparent on TV?
However I’m sure our players will learn his game and find him more often – but even without the ball he keeps their defenders occupied.

What should be an interesting test for us, is that we still have to play the four teams right above us, 3 of them are away. We need to get results in all of the games to prove we belong in and around position 8 – 10 on the table

Mike Ashley would be an absolute nutter not to give Rafa what he wants. The man is a genius.

Just to clarify that is Rafa you’re referring to ?
Didn’t want to think that you’d gone over to the dark side.

Anyone know if Ashley was there yesterday ?
It would take someone with a heart of flint and the imagination of a mollusc not to be moved by the spectacle of St.JP in full voice and to picture in his mind the possibilities lying ahead by sticking with Rafa and trusting him to invest in the improvements needed to make this team a top four PL side.

I think the way we play is actually going to suit us playing the likes of West Ham , Everton and Bournemouth we can sit deep and counter them especially with Almiron running in behind !

West Ham took us apart at St Jame’s by adopting similar tactics but I think we can catch them out

Rice vs Longstaff is exciting 2 great young talents playing against each other should be a good battle! Both of them could easily be displacing Henderson and Dier in the future

If Dubravka keeps coming for balls like that you will get a problem now and again. One time in 15 or whatever the ratio. Might be a mistake. Might be he is blocked or a foul that is not given.
Our defenders need to anticipate that and be there to cover when it does happen.

Was the same many years ago with Grobelar and the great Liverpool side. Their players wanted him to come off his line and try to take the ball, as it takes pressure off the defence. The players, the manager and the supporters all accepted the risk and wanted him to do it. They were playing the percentages.

When it goes wrong as it will from time to time we should absolutely not start some sort of blame game. All in it together.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing; with the squad all fit, I think we’ll do some damage in the run in. Bournemouth have some injury issues, and Everton are there for the taking. The pace we have up front will be great to counter when we play away. The game I’m really looking forward to is Leicester, because if we can force them to take the initiative, we have a real chance at the King Power

The way we are playing sort of reminds me of Atletico Madrid and even Juventus obviously not as good quality as them but we do a lot of similar things.

The way we defend and press for the ball is very similar !

Using the wingbacks and switching the flanks quickly is a move that they do as well if we could upgrade Richie and Yedlin with another pacy striker we would really be in business!

Agree – Dubravka was a joy to see coming off his line to catch every ball – don’t think he punched one.
Best moment for me was early in the first half when he came to the edge of the 18 yard box to pluck the ball out of the air – sent a message out to Burnley I won’t be bossed in the air!!!

What’s the story with Barreca; is this another of our mid-season acquisitions that disappears without a trace? Richie is not a wing back, and always looks like one challenge away from a card. Saying that, can’t fault work rate and effort – always gives 100%

Being brutally honest it wasn’t the greatest game to watch last night – we did the business in the first half and then closed out the game in the second half especially the last 15 minutes. Burnley don’t help by just lumping balls up hoping to win the second ball – I bet BT were wishing they’d chosen a different game to screen

LCBP, I posted last night on Manquillo and his recent improvement. He looked very good last night, maybe not as pacy as Yedlin but a better all-round player.

He’s only 24 so maybe just starting to come into his prime as a defender and also benefiting from nearly 2 seasons of Rafa coaching.

I think he’s our Yedlin upgrade and if he carries on like last night and improves further, he’ll do very well.

Yeah I like Manquillo he is not a left back but looks much more comfortable at right back!

Funnily enough he was at Atletico Madrid at a young age so there is potential !

But an upgrade of Yedlin who has just as much pace would be great !

I believe he was brought in purely for numbers and to avert a crisis if Dummet stayed injured and Ritchie was to suffer an injury, I honestly don’t believe he was first choice LB after the Lukaku fiasco and does anyone honestly think they’ll fork out another 8M for him if he’s stuck on the bench or not even in the squad for the next ten games?

Really solid performance that shows the great progress the team has made in 2019. Everyone working together, pinging the ball around nicely, switching play, hustling in midfield and winning majority of second balls all over the pitch.

Hayden was immense – put himself about and shut down everything coming thru the centre. When Longstaff got a yellow, he supercharged his performance in this respect, and became more aggressive. Of course, Burnley realized they couldnt play thru us, and resorted to their ugly hoofball, which the 3 centre-backs dealt with well, bar a couple of scrambles. Dubravka commanded the area and that stop from Wood;s hooked shot was impressive, as well as clearing with his feet when it was pinballing around near the goal late on.

Watched that rocket from Schar a few times now – absolutely thunderous! There’s been suggestions he’s got that in him – he’s wound up a few of them this season that have come close or tested the keeper, and this time the stars aligned.

    hibbit,
The ball is firmly in Masher’s court, is he honestly going to look this gift horse in the mouth to stubbornly insist that we are run in such a way that has seen us relegated twice and in a continuing relegation battle, what can he possibly be gaining from that other than spiteful revenge.
