There’s news today in the Chronicle that Rafa Benitez will want cast-iron assurances from Mike Ashley on funds to strengthen the first team squad before he signs any new contract to stay at the club.
And they need to be cast-iron promises written down in the contract after Mike Ashley told Rafa in May 2017 he could get every last penny the club earned, but he failed to keep his word on that.
Hence Rafa and Newcastle have been fighting relegation for the last two seasons.
Something that the owner is used to but Rafa is not, and he wants to build a team at Newcastle that can win trophies.
If he cannot get assurances from the owner he will be off in the summer, and who can blame him if he leaves?
Rafa will talk to Mike Ashley and company about a new deal only when the club are safe from relegation, and the 2-0 defeat at West Ham yesterday did not help our survival chances.
Rafa Benitez – wants cast-iron assurances from Mike Ashley
Rafa has thought through some of what he wants to do in the next few transfer windows and which players he wants to be brought in over this summer if he stays.
It’s reported he wants up to five new players to revitalize the squad so at least we can challenge for a top 10 place form the start f next season.
Ashley will point to the acquisition of Miguel Almiron for a potential £20.5M as proof he is willing to spend money.
But Ashley’s very nature in business is to cut corners and costs – he does that with Sports Direct all the time so he can offer the goods at competitive prices – and he’s been very successful doing that.
But that approach doesn’t work in football.
Benitez wants to use a different transfer process that will be streamlined and much quicker in getting players to the club.
And he wants to know in specific terms how much he will be given specifically for this summer in net terms.
Rafa is likely to try to offload players like Aarons, Lazaar, Murphy, Elliot, and Joselu and he will most likely need to let Isaac Hayden go.
Presumably, he can use that money to bring other players into the club.
There will be some negotiations coming from Rafa wants he sits down with the owner – once we are safe.
Rafa’s not willing to mess around with his future.
