Newcastle United have been hit with a knee injury to 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff; he picked it up in the first half of the 2-0 defeat at West yesterday afternoon.
And the youngster was seen leaving the London Stadium on crutches and with a knee brace and he is believed to have suffered a knee ligament injury.
If that’s the case he could be out for some time. – and it will rule him out playing for the England U21 team later this month.
Sean Longstaff – the knee injury could be serious
But the man thing is to try to get Sean fit again as soon as possible but if it’s his ligaments that would not be good.
Rafa Benitez was asked after the game if the injury was a bad one:
“We will see.” “I think he has an injury but we have to assess him in the next couple of days.”
“I think for anyone to have an injury is bad news. But for a young player who was doing so well, it’s even worse.”
“But hopefully it will be fine.”
Newcastle have experienced players eager to play in the first team again like Shelvey, Diame, and Ki who can all deputize for Sean.
But it’s a real pity if Sean is out for any length of time having played so brilliantly for his home town club since December.
We’ll have to wait and see what the prognosis is from the Newcastle medics once the swelling has diminished.
It just shows – life can be really tough at times.
