Why Summer Could Be Good Time To Sell Shelvey – Should Rafa Do It? – Poll

With Jonjo Shelvey now 5th choice at Newcastle in central midfield and news in the Mail today that West Ham will bid £20M for him this summer, it could be a good time to sell the 27-year-old England International.

It seems we have a ready replacement in impressive local lad 21-year-old Sean Longstaff and Newcastle could receive north of 20M for Jonjo and get his massive wages of £70K/week off the wage bill.

If he leaves maybe Longstaff will be given improved contract?

Should Rafa Benitez allow Jonjo Shelvey to leave this summer

This is how Rafa explained Jonjo’s position as number 5 choice right now:

“It is very easy to explain why he is not playing.”

“You have Longstaff and Hayden doing well. Still you have Ki and Diame – they were ahead of him – and they are not in the team, so you have five midfielders now for two positions.”

“We don’t have the space physically, you cannot put more than 18 players in the squad. Someone has to stay out and that is my problem to decide.”

“Many people say, “Yeah, but Jonjo could be…”. Yes, “could be”, but we are doing well.”

“The Burnley game was an example. We put Diame on the bench because we thought that it could be physical and, in the end, he was on the pitch.”

“Ki has the quality, Diame has the physicality so, for Jonjo to go ahead of him, he has to do really well and be the right one for that match.”

Rafa could use the 20M maybe to bring in another defensive midfielder since Isaac Hayden will be sold this summer.

And Rafa will want a left wing-back and striker brought in this summer – in addition to keeping Salomon Rondon

It doesn’t seem as if loan signing Antonio Barreca will fit the bill at Newcastle given he has hardly played at Newcastle and doesn’t make the matchday 18 too often.

If Rafa decides to stay at Newcastle it will be a crucial transfer window for Newcastle with Rafa wanting to bring n 5 new players and sell who he wants to.

One of those players could be Jonjo Shelvey.

What do you think?

Should Newcastle Sell Shelvey for £20M This Summer?

Yes. He can go in the summer if we are still in the Prem. Would keep him for the champo unless the right price came in. So, yep, sell him.

I’ll be honest. If he (whoever ‘he’ is) buys two three 20 million game changers in the summer, I’ll be thrilled, if the football will improve.

We can’t keep saying, ‘ah you did it for the future profit’ or to quieten the fans. Then ‘he’ll’ never buy. He’ll say, I just can’t win.

    Cheers ‘Dave’,
If Rafa has to start selling players for funds while Mikey pockets the TV, pies, beer and shirt sales then he won’t be hanging around to sell said players.

For the record, Everton who aren’t that much better off than us financially and who’s joint owners are worth less than half of what ours is have, according to transfermarkt, seven 20M+ players and eleven 15M+ players, we have none (Almiron 13.5M??) where is the money going???

i cant see where we will get 30 40 from player sales i think the only one we will get anything for is shelves

and 30 from the club wont be enough to improve the squad we need to replace kennedy rondon bereeca
we are still short of a decent back up striker
as i write this i remembered hayden wants out so we will get some for him, but with diame potentially out of contract hayden shelves being sold leaves us with ki and longstaff

30 mill generated by the plus sales will leave us really short on quality again
regardless of who our manager is because of the length of his contract shelvey will be sold hayden wants out and will be sold and i dont think the club will look to keep diame cos of his age

we borrowed cash to buy almiron we have to pay that back so i am sure that will impact on future budgets

Far too inconsistent but did give a few great performances at times but not enough , also when he looses the ball he stands with his hands on his thighs and watches them run past him .
Had more than his chance too shine so time to sell for me .

We need to find a minimum of 17M for Rondon straightaway or a 25 year old version that will play as well as him and score ten goals.

    beer,
Taking Rondon out of the equation, if WBA don’t get promoted then Gayle has to be worth 15M, 20M for Shelvey, I’m not sure about that mind, 7M for Clarke and 7M for Atsu, I think the best for Murphy would be another loan and 10M for Hayden. So I think 45/50M for players is possible but they all have to be replaced and if you replace them for like for like prices then we aren’t improving at all, Mikey needs to match at least what we get in sales to see us progress.

    we might lose shelvey
    but we will lose

kennedy diame heyden rondon beracca we are also short of a back up striker in the mould of rondon
you could throw 100 to replace that lot and still be short of quality

honestly dont think we will buy rondon because of his age

I’ve always been a big admirer of Ritchie due to his work rate and energy but his limitations have been exposed in the PL . His inability to beat defenders and progress down the wing have made him frustrating to watch as he constantly disrupts attacks by passing it backwards to avoid being challenged.
He is a great competitor and would be better suited to a Championship club where he would undoubtedly excel and would allow us an upgrade to attack with more flair.

    beer,
Exactly, we still need upgrades to both full backs, a back up striker to Rondon, IF he stays and all the players sold replaced, we’ve had two years of PL rebuilding now so unless Mikey throws in 100M (including sales) we are literally starting from scratch, I can’t see it. A more likely scenario is that a new manager will come in happy to start the rebuild to further his own career, if he’s good he’ll be off, if not he’ll take us down.

Wow this is getting better and better. We’ve just had the “proof” of stats to show how shocking shelvey is. However, using old fashioned techniques such as “watching a player”, coupled with “observing the effects of a player on the team performance” and ‘putting 2+2 together” and other such outmoded black art jiggery-pokery 🙂 it’s plain to the simplest subbutteo technician that Shelvesy invariably has a positive effect on team mobility going forward, eases the pressure on midfield immensely by his movement, vision and range, and on his day completely runs the show.

But no, let’s get shot. Sling his hook. Get rid of bad rubbish etc. Thankfully we have a manager who knows about football and footballers. He also knows he won’t replace him.

I’m hoping shelvey does get back into this team, because I’m pretty certain he’ll add to it not take anything away.

i forgot about a few of them murphy needs a season of regular footy so needs to go out onloan

i know the loan we got for almiron was secured on future prem cash but i would hope the instalments from mitro can pay for him

who ever our manager is next season unless we are willing to invest a fair chunk of money into players and still use the loan market we will struggle
apart from almiron we dont buy first team players we bring squad players all the time

look at our midfield i would like to see heyden stay but for him i dont think its poss
so for me its going to be our 3rd season back in with the big boys
we have ki shelves longstaff we need a couple for the middle that will help us bring out the best in what we have and help us keep the ball, if we are to move away from the bottom we need add quality

we dont add quality all we do is add another body

I really don’t get the ‘sell him’ calls on Shelvey. The lad hasn’t done anything wrong and was playing well in a limited attacking side before getting injured. I don’t believe we have any other player at his level (yet) in the middle of the park. He’s 26, he has his best years ahead of him and with a dynamic frontline that now has a game changer in Almiron could take him to another level.

Added to the fact that we will more than likely never see the money being reinvested anyway.

Now here is the thing… Who is there out there that we could bring in that would have similar PL experience and bring the similar qualities to Shelvey into the side for under 20m?

Yip, I can’t think of anyone either, let’s think things through before we write off (possibly) one of our best players. In my opinion Shelvey is too good to get the Joselu treatment!!!

If Rafa is happy to sell Shelvey then we should let him go with a wave and a thank you. If Rafa sees a long term future for Shelvey then I’ll be very happy to see him stock around as long as he wants.

The signing we really need to get sorted is Rafa himself

I COMPLETELY Disagree with Rafa on this one

Shelvey is our most talented midfielder
Plus he still has age on his side compared to Ki and Diame

If there are only 2 places in midfield and we have an abundance of talent there, why not play 3 in midfield?
    Liverpool does it
Why not play to our strengths?

    Completely disagree with the boss
    Shelvey for £20million in insane
He is worth at least 45million

    Rob @31

    Nail. Hit. Firmly. On. Head!!!

I sense a bit of derision regarding Shelvey purely because he is injured. Longstaff has been rightly lauded for his breakthrough but the question is will he maintain it (I’m pretty sure he will but we can never say for certain). I don’t for one minute think it would be fair to put responsibility on his shoulders as the creative force to replace Shelvey, Jonjo’s made it, been consistent for quite a few years now and his attitude is top class for Longstaff to develop and learn from. I absolutely agree if he wants first team guarantees and doesn’t see it happening with us then at this stage of his career I wouldn’t begrudge him a move on for the sake of his own career and international aspirations. Like yourself I would thank him for what he done here if he goes on his way, but would prefer it if he stayed with us, I think him staying with us when we went down and not rocking the boat should be applauded too, he was one of the main driving forces for us coming back up first pop… IMO he is a top pro!

Many Scousers on the radio in melt down because they think they’ve blown the title.
Don’t how Sky ‘fix” the games or results but Saturday May 4th could be even more significant if they need points at SJP to take the title to the last match of the season and if we stop them doing that then prepare for melt down on Merseyside.

Lascelles actually you’re quite right to point out the fact he dropped down to the championship with us with nary a moan. He was our creative spark that season and last but injuries have got in his way this term.

That said he has been usurped with the long balls by Lejeune and schaer and maybe didn’t offer the same energy that others do in the centre midfield area.

I’d be wary of moving him on but if the Gaffer says it’s the right thing then who are we to argue?
