It was a bit of a let down on Saturday when Newcastle didn’t bother to show up in the first half at the London Stadium, and we were 2-0 down at the half.
And against a strong side like West Ham, it’s difficult to come back from two goals down.
And so it proved for Newcastle even though we were much improved in the second half with Mo Diame playing well in central midfield and Salomon Rondon going close a few times to getting that all-important first goal.
But we couldn’t score and lost the game 2-0, but Rafa was not happy at the lack of concentration from Fabian Schar and then Florian Lejeune for the West Ham goals.
While we have won the last four games at home since beating the Terriers 1-0 away on 15 December, we have only picked up 2 points from the previous six league games away from home, and that’s not good.
Rafa Benitez – we’ll be strong again away from home
It used to be the other way round, and we found it difficult to win at home.
But after the disappointment of a poor display in London Rafa seems upbeat that we can still pick up wins in the future.
This is what he said in the Shields Gazette today:
“I think we will be strong again in our games away, but we have to start with more focus and more concentration,”
“So I think we have to do what we did in a lot games away earlier in the season when it was very difficult for teams to break us down.”
We were hoping for another clean sheet on Saturday, so it was not good when we were 2-0 down after 45 minutes.
But Newcastle will field a strong side against the Toffees on Saturday, and if we play somewhere near our best form, we could get our 5th successive win at home.
That would be something.
