Rafa’s New Deal Includes Top Wages – But Clauses To Break His Contract

There’s a report in the Chronicle today from Mark Douglas that Mike Ashley is willing to make Rafa the best-paid manager out of the top six clubs in the Premier League.

Currently, we believe Rafa is on around £6M/year, and it could likely be more than that – but he’s worth every penny he earns at Newcastle.

The contract Rafa signed almost three years ago contained financial penalty clauses if he broke his contract.

And it’s thought to have been one year’s wages – around £6M – if he walked away from Newcastle.

The Chronicle is reporting that to keep Rafa on Tyneside, there wouldn’t be any financial penalty clauses in his new contract.

And there would be break clauses that would allow Rafa to walk away without any financial penalty.

Presumably, that would allow Rafa to walk away if Mike Ashley doesn’t keep his side of the agreements documented in the contract.

Rafa Benitez – will get a top wage to stay as Newcastle manager

It doesn’t appear he has done that over the previous three years with Rafa frustrated at the lack of transfer funds he’s received.

Rafa has never ever broken any contract he has signed in his football career, and we hope that Mike Ashley is more flexible and gives Rafa what he wants to stay at Newcastle.

After all, what the manager wants is to make Newcastle into a top English club with a top team to match.

Why wouldn’t Mike Ashley want the same thing and increase the price he can get for Newcastle United down the road?

And Rafa Benitez knows exactly what he’s doing.

These changes look promising, but as we said, the owner must give Rafa more funds to spend and come up with what he is willing to do on all of Rafa’s specific demands.

Some fans will think it’s dangerous to allow Rafa to walk away from Newcastle without any financial penalty, but it’s a lot better than him not signing a new deal to stay at the club.

And it also seems these contract talks are so crucial that Mike Ashley himself should be part of the discussions with Rafa and Lee Charnley.

They are that important to the future of Newcastle United FC.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I remember there was alot of discussion about this figure at the time when the accounts were released. Perhaps you could google search the blog with the date and scrol through. There were many different theories, payment to Wally McBrolly and staff, bonus pay, a holding in expectation of HMRC fine, but as ever there has been no clarity from the club.

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again I think some of you take these bits of itk takeover information far too seriously. This is a football blog full of rumour and speculation – it’s just the same as when the window is open and we’re linked to every player and his dog most of which come to nothing. People are just passing on stuff they’ve heard or been told – I know most of it will turn out to be b*ll*cks but still good fun to read.

Everton, Bournemouth and then an International break. Really not looking forward to the empty swirl of no football.

I’m never sure what’s more ridiculous, those that get a thrill out of telling strangers on the internet something they’ve, A) Completely fabricated, B) have been told in confidence, C) Heard in the pub from someone who heard from a good source OR, those that get offended, bemused, upset when strangers on the internet don’t believe them or ridicule their comments. It’s the internet people. This place isn’t real. Imagine all the strange, weird and wonderful characters on here. Nobody knows anybody. Heck, one of us could be Mr Mike Ashley himself… Hmm…

    martoon,
When I guy at work tells you his daughters friend, who speaks eleven languages accompanied him to a trip to Uganda. On the journey from Manchester she read a Ugandan phrase book and could speak passable Ugandan when she arrived. Do you think that story was a bit of fun or has this serial bullshitter got some form of mental illness?

Stop throwing around accusations re mental illness Jail. You’re not qualified to bracket someone in that way. Stick to your Ashley script like a good boy.

Jail @169 – The difference is in your example it is a guy from work that you actually know in the real world. This is the internet and a blog where none of us actually know each other (I know there are 1 or 2 exceptions) which is as Tramp says the weird and wonderful world of the internet which is full of bull – the trick is learning to work out what is real but not get upset about it!

Further talk of the club being sold now and outside of the transfer window is clearly designed by Bishop as a PR exercise to turn this topic into an all year round fest rather than an occasional feature.
    Keeps him busy I suppose.

Aarons getting some positive feedback for his performances at Sheffield Wednesday. Pity Sorenson is getting mucked about at Blackpool and no game time. Both are worthy of following Longstaff into the first team squad, when the time us right.

Jail, I think the key would be which languages the daughter already spoke – if one or two of them were reasonably closely related to the one she wanted to learn, then really it’s just a case of adapting her mind. Someone who speaks 11 languages obviously has a bit of flair for the skill.

In the same way, rumours are more or less credible depending on how close to the source they lie. It’s not beyond reasonable belief that some on here have contacts close to the club, if they have lived here for a long time and / or move in the right circles.

This doesn’t mean that the information can’t change over time or become less relevant for other reasons. This is why it’s good to maintain a healthy level of scepticism, as most have always said.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy the back and forth of rumours being passed around – I’d be happy to hear something from a mate in a pub, whether I chose to believe it or not. It’s the same on here, but with a bigger pool of people.

What I object to is folk being castigated and berated for daring to share. That’s just obnoxious (not calling anyone obnoxious by the way, just labelling a brand of behaviour obnoxious). This is, after all, a public forum which we’re all equally entitled to use for whatever purpose we desire (within Ed’s House Rules, obviously).

Jail @172 – I don’t believe people are making it up I think they have heard a rumour, received information etc. and are simply passing it on which in my opinion is what this blog is for – if I heard anything I would do the same. Of course the source of the information is probably complete rubbish but I’m not going to get upset about it no matter how desperate I am to see the back of Ashley.

    Ashley,
This is crunch time for you and Rafa as well as the club. This is one crossroads that you must do the right thing or lose one BIG chuck of everything.
Give Rafa what he wants and it will pay big dividends in the long run.

Yes jail that’s not conceivable. You thi k Howey wud go on Sky to repeat what he heard on here. Its just as stupid as you thinking I would make rafa leave by questioning his tactics or subs in certain games. Solution? Take a break from the log jail, it’s only a gossip parlour on a screen.
