It’s not good news for 21-year-old Sean Longstaff.
Newcastle United have confirmed that after visiting with a specialist on his knee injury yesterday Seam will be out for the rest of the season and we will not see him play again until pre-season begins in early July.
This is the statement released by the club this morning:
Newcastle United can confirm midfielder Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season with a knee ligament injury.
The 21-year-old – who has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month for February – was replaced at half time during Saturday’s Premier League game at West Ham United.
Academy graduate Longstaff has made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies this term, scoring twice.
The main thing now is to get Sean the best available treatment so he fully recovers from what is a serious injury.
talkSPORT had reported earlier today that Sean would be out for four months and that now seems an accurate report.
The difference is talkSPORT report he would be out for four months with local reports now saying it’s six to eight weeks which is half that time.
Rafa Benitez will address Sean Longstaff’s injury ar tomorrow’s press conference for the vital home game against Everton on Saturday.
This is bad news for Sean and for Newcastle.
The Mail reports he will continue to wear his knee brace for the next two months before he starts rehabilitation at the Benton Training grounds.
I’m told Longstaff will be back running in 12 weeks so should be fine for pre-season. https://t.co/RUDtrxztiC

So there’s some disagreement on how long he will be out for with the Chronicle saying that reports he will be out for four months have been dismissed by club sources.
It would be good if he’s fully fit before preseason starts in early July.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Didn’t see many saying rest Longstaff before west ham game. Rafa would have got slaughtered if he did. Just a injury it happens. Part and parcel of football.

Comment #42Rob – nice post – posted I fancy just to be contrary to what I posted.
You clearly need to read up on fatigue. Try checking out “Football Medicine” website – better being informed than ill informed.
Interesting however that you believe it really was Longstaff worrying about Declan Rice that contributed to his injury. What a load of contrary cobblers.

Comment #43Mr Tuff I agree the strains are put on different muscle groups via changes in direction but as a footballer, those other muscle groups get strengthened and conditioned (It’s not his first rodeo).
27 Marathons in 27 days would put mind boggling strain on muscles used to go in a straight line. 707 Miles continuous over 27 days makes me want to cry just thinking about it lol

Comment #44Don’t think fatigue had anything to do with the injury. I thought that West Ham targeted him from the off Nasty twat Noble and Snotgrass had already had a go at him before the injury. What beats me why he got booked and not Snotgrass
Both went for the same ball 50 – 50 tackle
Ref was poor all game.
Couple of questions – was Perez goal off-side as I thought it was deflected off a WH defender onto his path
And did LeJuene actually touch the player for the penalty

Comment #45Some interesting debate if nothing else.
Not sure about the Eddy Izzard point. Running a marathon a day is not the same as a game like football. Contact sport. Timing etc.
If you have ever played a game of football when you are feeling a bit stiff etc you will know that it affects all sorts of things. Balance, timing etc. A professional young sportsman yes, but you still can’t cheat mother nature.
Think Robleeno at 40 has essentially nailed it.
I think Rafa could have changed a winning side without folks getting annoyed about it. 7 points from 9. Could have been bold with team selection and I think most folks would have supported that.
Any way. If it’s 8 weeks it’s not the end of the world. It’s 6 weeks for a proper hamy.
Too much expectation and responsibility on a young player I think. West Ham thought they could try the rough house stuff. We had no enforcer until Mo came on.
Is Rafa under instructions to only play Mo if absolutely necessary. Who knows but that would not be a suprise to any of us.

Comment #48The good thing working for Longstaff is that at the moment at least, Sr. Benitez’s memory is good enough so as not to forget how good he actually was when he’s fit again. Same with Shelvey I dare say 😉

Interesting if this is true no wonder we haven’t brought through any players in years !

Comment #50By the way I do think we had equal quality to come on.
Atsu – did well in a number of recent games.
Muto – 10M pound man.
Diame.
Ki.
Whats happened to Kennedy.
As I say I just had this feeling something like that would happen.
Why ?
Well we seem to get it a lot. Ben Arfa. Disgraceful and the player responsible was able to just laugh about it days later.
I was at Wigan when Hairada was on the end of that tackle. Never left a game feeling as sick as I did that day. We lost to a goal late on that should not have been given. We were fighting relegation. Most thought at the time that he had sustained a career threathening injury.

Just because Eddy Izzard’s a Bexhill resident (well, his parents are), that doesn’t make him a ‘middle-ages’ man. Bexhill’s got its share of old-timers but in fairness to Mr Izzard…..

Comment #52Mister Tuff, you’re giving yourself too much credit, my intention is always just to post, not to argue. Well, nearly always and definitely this time.
😉
I’ll check out the website you suggest. I’m no sports scientist, just giving my opinion.
But the mental pressure (including from the invented competition with Declan Rice) could have had something to do with it – just that desire to put in the extra effort, throwing himself into a tackle which he didn’t need to. It’s something which a young inexperienced player might be affected by, more so than an older, more experienced pro.

Comment #53My Eddie Izzard comment I feel is valid when replying to someone saying 3 games of football in 8 days is too much for a fit healthy 21 year old professional athlete. As said above, football is a contact sport and the tackle is the reason why this injury occurred and not the 3 games in 8 days.

Comment #55Lesh apologise if I caused any offense lol
Eddie was 54 when he undertook this challenge, in South Africa, under some rather uncomfortable heat. Rather than putting a slight on the term middle aged, I was in fact tipping my cap to him 🙂
