Newcastle seem to be doing the right things this year, and you cannot complain about the fight and spirit our players are showing in every game.
To go 2-0 down in such an important game last Saturday at home to Everton and to come back in the second half to win 3-2 was something extraordinary.
And the fans are right behind the manager and the players, and that’s one of the massive strengths of Newcastle.
But it’s worth remembering that if we had lost the game on Saturday, we would have been only 3 points above the drop zone in 15th place.
Rafa Benitez – waves to the crowd on Saturday
With the win, we are 7 points clear of relegation if you include goal difference, and 5 points behind 9th placed West Ham who were surprisingly beaten 2-0 at Cardiff City on Saturday.
That’s after they had beaten us 2-0 at the London Stadium
This is some of what Rafa has said on nufcTV:
“Obviously we know that we are in the relegation battle and that we have to win a lot of games if we want to stay up,”
“So I think everybody was feeling how important it was to get the winning]goal, how important the result was.”
“And this reaction – the celebration around the stadium – is normal.”
“It’s always important to do your job and just try to keep winning games. If the other teams (in the relegation zone) lose, then they can give you a hand.”
“In this case over the weekend it didn’t happen. It was therefore important for us to show the fighting spirit throughout the game.”
“You could see the team was pushing and pushing until the end, and that is the key if you want to stay up.”
So Rafa always keeps his feet firmly on the ground, and he will try to win every one of the 8 games left for the season.
And we must have a good chance of surpassing the 44 points we reached last season.
We need more wins to do that.
What do you think?
