One of our up and coming players Cal Roberts has been recalled from his loan spell at Colchester becasue he wasn’t getting enough playing time and he made only three sub appearances.
And now according to Colchester boss John McGreal, has said the South Shields lad will not be getting a new contract in the summer.
Cal turns 22 next month, and he’s at that age where he has to make a breakthrough to the first team or else his chance may be gone.
Cal Roberts – no contract renewal this summer
This is what McGreal has told the media about Cal:
“Cal was told the other week by Newcastle that he wasn’t getting a contract.”
“His head went a little bit to be fair because I think he was thinking that there was a possibility of him getting a contract there.”
“He’s been there all his career and played for them this year.”
“It’s been tough for Cal and he’s been away from home.”
“He’s still got a bit of a sore ankle and he wants to get that right.”
“And I think Newcastle pulled him back to get him some training and get him into the U23s and put a little bit into the shop window.”
“We know he’ll be out of contract and Newcastle have told him.”
“We’d consider everyone in the summer because at this moment in time, recruitment drives and things are getting flagged up.”
This will come as a bit of a shock to some Newcastle fans, but you have to be pushing for a first-team place when you are 22.
Otherwise, your future is probably at some other club.
And Rafa’s standards for players at Newcastle will continue to rise.

Comment #2As someone said earlier, if these three return loan players can ensure the U23s get promoted, that would be a great achievement and will be good for the on going success of the Academy.

Comment #3Not prem standard? Based on what? He’s not had an opportunity. You would have said longstaff was not ‘prem standard’ at the start of the season as he hadn’t even played in the championship.

Comment #10Just voted on Ed’s poll for the result against Everton.
I’ve gone for a win.
My prediction is that we will go 1 nil down, miss a penalty, then concede a second.
In the second half Perez to get a brace and we win 3-2.
