Fernandez And Diame Start Against The Cherries

Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle team he will start against the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium this afternoon.

And Mo Diame has come into the starting eleven in place of Ki for his 22nd start this season – Mo must have been impressive in training.

It also looks like Rafa will play a back four with Federico Fernandez coming in for the injured Jamaal Lascelles.

Fans are fairly confident we can get the win with 60% positive about getting all 3 points.

We shall see – but another win would be tremendous.

Supposedly, after today’s start. Diame just needs two more starts to trigger the one year extension.

Rafa playing a 5-4-1. – (variable with Almiron and Perez supporting Rondon – I would suggest).

Surprised diame got the nod, means midfield is basically to protect defence rather than feed our front three as Diame/Hayden have little creativity nor can pass the ball more than 6 yards

Diame wants a two year extension so don’t think it matters if he plays >24 games

Mo Diame makes his first start since January 2 in midfield, with Ki dropping out of the squad entirely. Shelvey is preferred on the bench. Rafa deciding he needs extra physicality in the midfield alongside Hayden, so that’s why Diame is in there

Don’t think he gets a choice if it’s triggered as it is already stipulated in the contract.

Yeah the danger is of us getting overrun in midfield so I can see why he will pick Diame as him and Hayden will fight for everything in the middle allowing us to win and hopefully have a quick counter!

Richie might be in midfield as well to make sure we don’t get outnumbered as 3 at the back didn’t work against West Ham or Everton because they had more in the middle and Bournemouth play like that as well!

Wonder why Ki is out the squad though ?

Plan looks like it is to overpower them in midfield. Rondon could have a lot of joy against their two skinny CBs and if he can pin himself on Ake 1 vs 1 he will dominate him in the air – hopefully a repeat of his bullet header.

Almiron, hopefully plenty of space on the break. Perez to continue where he left-off.

Interesting that even with the personnel named, Bournemouth will be non the wiser on our formation. Could be 3 at the back or 4-2-3-1 with Ritchie back in his RWF position.

Don’t know why people talk as if Hayden/Diame are only good for tackling and defensive duties and totally incompetent on the ball. Hayden did more playmaking than anybody 1st half last week. Think he;s got 4 assists in his run in the team – none eye-catching, but he gets about to make them happen and has good understanding of space. Diame too has his moments and can drive past players and on occasion pull off some incredibly difficult passes with ease.

Sure they’re not classic playmakers, but sometimes having a designated playmaker stifles play as everybody looks to them and only them to make something happen, so themselves just play the easy ball.

I think a draw is most likely result just because they’re at home, but if any team will win it will be us going off form. It looks like we are matching their formation and going for a similar hard running first 11. Seems we are going like for like to neutralise any tactical advantage and our players are more confident right now so we should edge it. I’d be a lot happier with either Shelvey or Longstaff in the middle – not so keen on seeing two defensive ones play together. Brings back memories of the Colback Anita pairing although these two are far better players.

    All Aboot.

    Yes.

He also recycled the ball in a controlled fashion behind their line for the winner, just as he did at Man City for Rondon’s goal. He also played an excellent pass slipping Yedlin in behind the fullback last week.
