It’s been reported in the local press that if Rafa stays on Tyneside past this June, he will want five new players brought into the squad this summer.
We assume he wants to have a breakthrough and will get help (finally) from the owner Mike Ashley to spend some decent money in the transfer window this summer.
But Rafa long with help from Lee Charnley will also need to clear the decks and sell some players to make way for the new players.
Players currently out on loan include Jack Colback, Achraf Lazaar, Jacob Murphy, Rolando Aarons, and Henri Saivet, and they are all surplus to requirements.
Jack Colback – on loan at Nottingham Forest
Returning loan player Callum Roberts will not get a contract extension this summer, and Jamie Sterry could be leaving this summer too.
Add to that list striker Joselu, who is not good enough for Newcastle, and we also could see both Rob Elliot and Ciaran Clark also leave Newcastle this summer.
So there are 10 players at least who could be leaving Newcastle this summer as Rafa attempts to build a team that can be in the top ten next season with no battles against relegation.
And it looks like Kenedy and also Antonio Barreca have lost their chance to make their loan deals permanent this summer.
We expect Dwight Gayle to return to Newcastle when his loan deal at the Baggies is up this summer.
Rafa didn’t want to lose him last summer but had to – so he could bring in West Brom striker Rondon on loan.
If Rafa does stay, it could be an exciting summer for Newcastle fans.
