Rafa Benitez wanted Salomon Rondon brought into the club last summer as his number one target.
But Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley took months before they finally had him signed, but only on loan – with Dwight Gayle going the other way – something Rafa did not want to do.
Mike Ashley had refused to pay Rondon’s relegation release clause of £16.5M becasue at 29 – he was too told.
Too old for Mike Ashley in any case.
Rondon has been a great success on Tyneside and has scored 10 goals for the club this season with all but one of those coming in the Premier League.
He seems the perfect center-forward for the current Newcastle side.
56-year-old former Ireland striker Tony Cascarino thinks that Rondon has been the best signing in the Premier League this season and, (unfortunately) he said he could become a £50M striker.
Salomon Rondon – after scoring at Watford
This is what Cascarino has told The Times.
“In January last year, Alan Pardew persuaded West Bromwich Albion to turn down £38M from China for Salomon Rondon,”
“If he keeps playing like this, he could be a £50M striker. There hasn’t been a better signing this season, but he is only on loan at Newcastle.”
“If they can make it permanent, they should because he can be a Champions League player.”
Salomon is still on loan and West Brom have said they want £16M for him this summer – even though he only has one year left on his Baggies contract.
It will not help Newcastle that Cascarino has said he could be worth £50M in the future.
It may give ideas to West Brom to even raise the price they want this summer for him.
It may be difficult to arrange to have him on Tyneside during the final year of his contract at West Brom – maybe our best bet is to do a player exchange with involving Dwight Gayle?
But Mike Ashley should have paid the £16.5M for him, and we wouldn’t have the problem this summer.
Ashley has to now solve this problem somehow – if he wants to keep Rafa at the club.
