Newcastle center-back Fabian Schar suffered a rather sickening concussion last weekend in the 2-0 win over Georgia by Switzerland in the Euro qualifying game.
After being unconscious for four minutes, the Swiss medics let him play on against the UEFA and FIFA rules.
If a player suffers a concussion, he should not play on – for his own good and his long term health.
Newcastle immediately contacted the Swiss Football Association and demanded he not play in yesterday’s home game against Denmark in Euro qualifying.
The Swiss agreed to that but have been getting some terrible criticism in the press for risking the health of the very talented and well-liked Newcastle United defender.
Schar is also an extremely popular footballer in Switzerland.
Denmark goalscorer Henrik Dalsgaard (left) celebrates late equalizer against Switzerland
And there was drama in the game last night with Switzerland being 3-0 up after 76 minutes; they seemed to be heading for their second win during the International break.
But would you believe it – Denmark scored three goals in the final six minutes of the game – scoring the equalizer three minutes into stoppage time.
So it looks like they missed Fabian in that game – it was a terrible collapse by the Swiss and at home too.
Schar is a never-say-die defender and a strong character; maybe they missed some of that late in the game against Denmark?
Fabian will be on his way back to Newcastle today.
He will know he has made headlines around the football world for playing on after being knocked out.
Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned.
Players who suffer concussions cannot be allowed to play on during a game – so some good will come of it for the future.
And Alan Shearer spoke strongly about it in the Sun – and his standing in the game will help to get these rules fully adhered to in the future.

Comment #41Three of the Big Four have turned down the opportunity to tender for the audit of Sports Direct because of concern over conflicts of interest or reputational risk issues

Comment #42I just worry about all these charges that could come up can guarantee it will be the club and fans that suffer as opposed to Ashley!!
Bit like when Rangers went down to the 3rd division nothing happened to Craig Whyte or David Murray who ran the club into the ground!!
Maybe this is Uefas plan to stop the premiership overtaking?Issuing transfer bans to all teams in the league for a season or two ?

Could eventually see Rafa being approached once Klopp when he is sacked or moves to a bigger club !!
Do you know something ?
I thought I’d seen Klopp on the Metro at St. James’ station last week so maybe he is moving to a bigger club.

Comment #45So Rafa has been talking about how we haven’t really replaced Townsend, Sissoko ,Janmaat and Wijnaldum actually if we had their pace and attacking quality mixed with our current teams work ethic and defensive structure we would be a match for any team in the league!!
Almiron feels like he is replacing one of them but we need another 2 or 3 plus Rondon and we really would be a deadly outfit!!
Would love us to get Mooy for midfield , King or Fraser from Bournemouth to start the rebuilding process properly !!

Comment #46Yeah, they were four very good players. This 11 under Rafa could be counted on to dish out the odd black eye and blood nose to the senior sides.
………………….Dubravka.
Janmaat Schar Fernandez Lejeune Ritchie.
…………….Sissoko..Widjnaldum.
……Perez…………………………Almiron
……………………Rondon.
You could bring on Dummett and Townsend and go 442 as you need, etc.
Are we that far off it now?
One or two decent windows off I’d say. Little valid reason why we couldn’t have that caliber of side this time next year.

Comment #48Not that I’m advocating we sign players in those positions, just of that calibre, at left wing back, wing, attacking mid, and centre forward.

Comment #49I’d love another flair player like Almiron and competition for rondon if he stays, like for like replacements at least for anyone leaving from midfield and competition for Dummett… Manquillo of late has started to prove himself when he has played and ayoze has stepped up too, add to that the solid back line and keeper we have… It shows now that when you have a dangerous flair player like Almiron, who has been taking players out of position and create spaces all over allowing the others to thrive… Imagine 2 of those type of players on the pitch, and ayoze would step up more, I think there is so much more to come from him and with competition we might just see it!

Comment #54Odds on Benitez becoming boss at Celtic dropped from 20/1 to 5/1 today. Former Sunderland boss David Moyes is keen on the job while ex-Huddersfield Town chief David Wagner is also interested.

Comment #55In all 17 goals for Atalanta this season, Duvan Zapata only actually turned the defender once, the rest were scored from being in the right place at the edge of the 6 yard box. £40m seems a bit steep but may be there is more in his all round game.

Comment #56Lindisfarne @54 – I saw that story about Rafa & Celtic. I can’t imagine him wanting to go there given the status of Scottish football, yes they get in the CL, but he’d probably have less to spend there than he has at nufc!

I doubt it also, but having the freedom to spend a little money may still be better with the added bonus of CL. Hopefully it is just positioning by Rafa.

Comment #59Rafa has had Nahitan Nandez the 23 year old Uruguayan CM
who plays for Boca Juniors , extensively scouted.
We nearly got him in the last window but with CMs leaving in
the Summer he’s now become a priority.

Comment #60Rafa managing Celtic v Livingston is at about the same level as the Mackems v Washington . Ain’t a starter. People put money on that bet ? Really ?
