Newcastle Now Interested In Signing 23-year-old Uruguayan International Midfielder

Newcastle United are said to be interested in 23-year-old Uruguayan International midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who currently plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina.

He joined Boca Juniors in the summer of 2017 from Penarol in Montevideo.

He has 20 caps for his country and played well last summer in the 2018 World Cup in Russia where he played in every game and started all but one of Uruguay’s games.

Nandez was outstanding for his country in the tournament.

It looks like the midfielder will leave Boca Juniors in the summer and there are reported to be a number of clubs after him.

Calcio Mercato in Italy are reporting that Newcastle are very interested in the player who would be available for around €20M.

They also report that Cagliari were close to signing the player in the January transfer window with the deal collapsing late in that transfer window.

The Italian club will renew their interest in the player in the summer, but it looks like Rafa Benitez is interested in bringing the 5ft 7ins midfielder to Newcastle.

Leeds United of the Championship are also reported to be interested in the player.

He has played 11 times for Boca this season with two goals and one assist, and in total, he has made 48 appearances for the Argentine club with 6 goals and 4 assists.

Local reports in Newcastle have suggested if Rafa stays this summer he will get a decent transfer fund to spend.

At least one big signing – like Miguel Almiron in January – is on the cards for this summer.

Nandez made his international debut for Uruguay back in 2015, in a friendly game against Costa Rica played in September of that year.

What do you think?

The South American or Latin players at the moment tend to be the best especially for fitting into Rafa’s system as they all seem to have great technical ability mixed with an insane work rate!!

I am guessing he would be Hayden’s replacement?

If Rafa get “Big Money” to spend in the next window……. I’ll believe it when it happens!

We’ve all been there so many times before!

If Rondon still has the 16.5 release clause then to be honest hes probably going to be the bargain of the summer based on his current form!

The prices being quoted for average strikers these days seems to be between 30 and 50 million and we need two of them minimum !!!

So this guy is 5 foot 7, yesterday we were linked with a midfielder standing at 5 foot 6. Is Rafa recruiting for NUFC or for his next assignment as casting director for the remake of the Wizard of Oz?

Seriously, though, never heard of this guy, which is likely down to my ignorance than any lack of skill on his part. Is he any good?

Does height really matter – especially in midfield?
Can’t think a lack of inches hampered Beardsley, Strachan, Shoulder, McCreery, Green, Arentoft, Batty, Ball, Gemmill, Ernie Taylor, Hibbitt etc. do you?
Vision, speed, awareness, passing ability, dominance and technique – surely these are more important than being able to reach up to the top shelf?
