Report – Rafa Wants £40M Rated Former Napoli International Striker

The Chronicle are reporting today that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez are keen on Atalanta’s on-loan striker Duvan Zapata.

The 6ft 2ins striker’s home club is Sampdoria,

There are reports from Italy that Newcastle scouts have been watching the 27-year-old striker.

Zapata moved to Sampdoria last year, and he was at Napoli before that from 2013 for five years – so he had two seasons with Rafa Benitez, the manager of the club from 2013-2015.

He played 54 games for Napoli with 15 goals and 5 assists.

The 6 times capped Colombian international has had an outstanding season, and in 37 total games, he has 22 goals and 7 assists for Atalanta.

They have an option to buy the player at the end of his loan this season, but the news is that they want to sell him immediately – presumably for an inflated fee.

Other clubs reported to be interested in the striker include West Ham, Roma, and Inter Milan.

Zapata will not come cheap, and there are reports in Italy that West Ham failed with a €40M bid for him in January.

Atalanta are said to now want €50M million (£42.7M) according to Tuttomercatoweb.

He will be expensive and maybe too much for Newcastle although the player himself has always spoken very highly of Rafa as a coach.

He could be interested in a move to Newcastle to link up with Rafa again – but surely not for over £40M?

What do you think?

A club like us should have Zapata and Rondon fighting for the striking positions imagine the two of them on the pitch at the same time ? Defenders in the premiership would not fancy that one bit!

    Thinking aloud here
I’m wondering if our sluggish performance in the
transfer market may be linked to the ongoing agent
    investigation.
Ashley opened up the club’s coffes for McClaren yet
not for Rafa – illogical as Spock would say.

Rondon’s agent is the same as Juan Mata namely
Mata’s dad , who has been investigated by the tax
    authorities in Spain.

    Food for thought

If Charnley can knock them down to £4 million we could be in with a shout for this guy.

    @Jib

    IF ONLY!!

Our sluggish performance in the transfer market is the same reason that we always have ASHLEY!Always just spending the bare minimum for as long as possible!

The Mclaren summer was an anomaly and funnily happened after the fans actually protested properly when Carver was in charge!

But interesting that you mention about the tax issues it seems so many of the players have been at it and it looks like its finally catching up with them ! If only they would do that with the big companies and dodgy MP’s…….

Jib @ #4, that’s similar and relevant to my point yesterday re the ongoing tax investigations impacting on our transfer policy.

They were also speculation and came from a different angle, but there could be something in it, for sure. If he’s being investigated, Ashley will want to keep his nose clean, meaning he won’t be able to indulge in any transfer / agent-based financial shenanigans.

This could actually make us really unable to compete in the transfer marketplace. Where’s an agent going to place his player? With the club who offers the best long-term prospects or the one who’ll bung him a million?
