Benitez Slams The Ball Back Into Ashley’s Court – Negotiations Heat Up

Rafa was asked right at the end of his press conference yesterday about the recent news that he had engaged an agency to look for a management job for him in France.

The story was reported in L’Equipe and was not good news for Newcastle fans – if it was true.

Rafa had obviously thought about how he would answer the question when it came up in yesterday’s press conference.

And he immediately quashed the idea that he was looking anywhere further than Newcastle United – at least at the moment.

Rafa Benitez – hitching a ride at yesterday’s press conference

And a surprise was Rafa said he was waiting for an answer from the club:

This is his answer he gave right at the end of the press conference yesterday:

“Lee Charnley was talking with my people and now we are waiting.”

“I read the story.”

“The reality is that I was not at any meeting because I was here and I left the training ground at 7:00pm or 8:00pm in the evening.”

“The only club I am talking about my future with at the moment is Newcastle United.”

“I am waiting for an answer.”

“I have had some conversations and I am waiting for the answers.”

“(Again) I am waiting for an answer – I don’t know when (I’ll get it).”

The negotiations will now pick up, and they could be helped significantly if we can get all 3 points this afternoon at home to Crystal Palace.

My predictions for tonight. Bournemouth 1-1 Burnley. Huddersfield 0-2 Leicester. Newcastle 3-1 Palace. I’m a little worried about Palace’s wingers and fullbacks attacking us in a 3-4-3 formation, but they’ve gone off the boil at just the right time so I think a big win. Zaha is maybe the best player outside the top 6, and Batshuayi and Townsend would possibly get in any team outside the top 6. We need to make sure they are starved of service and take the game to them. Leicester and Palace were two of the biggest underachievers this season when you look at their players. Leicester have fixed that now and will be going for top 6 next season.

I would have thought it would have made good sense for fans to be organised and boycott STs until Rafa’s contract was sorted out one way or the other, after all ,Ashley knows that if he guaranteed bumb’s on seats for next season, that fans will turn up regardless of Rafa signing a new deal or walking at the end of his contract.

Mike Williamsson I agree. Have been praising Leicester all season. They are a model of club for us in terms of style of play that rafa likes, community integration etc

Rafa deserves better. He should have been given an acceptable contract ages ago. He should have an owner who encourages and appreciates not who he has to wrangle with at every turn. That has to take a toll and counter a long term plan. He probably deserves better than NUFC. He certainly deserves better than Ashley.
