Two Changes – Ki In For Diame – Fabian Schar Starts For Dummett

Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the important game against Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park this afternoon.

It’s extremely likely that a win today will see us safe and 10 points above 3rd bottom Cardiff City who have only 16 points to play for.

It will be a huge relief if we can win this game and make it six home wins on the trot.

Fabian Schar returns after a two-match ban

It looks like Diame didn’t recover from his knock and still no start for Shelvey.

The subs are: Darlow, Dummett, Shelvey, Muto, Fernandez, Manquillo, Atsu

And fans seem fairly confident we can get the win with 7 in 10 fans expecting a win today.

To be fair, I didn’t say he’s a bad player or struggling at left wing back. Just stating that I think he’s out of form. He can still get involved so not sure what heat map would prove as he’s never been the type of player to go missing anyway.

Crosses are all well and good but he’s creating very little from open player and past few matches his delivery from set pieces have been poor.

Hope he plays better today but if not, think it’s time to try someone else at lwb.

Shelvey still not getting a start, wonder if he is still carrying that injury, or Rafa just doesn’t trust him.

He did flare up a little last game he played in!

ronaldo, Ritchie creating very little from open play? Probably because he plays as a defender for the majority of games. Nobody got much of a sniff against Arsenal, but didn’t Ritchie win MOTM on this blog for that game.

How about the few game prior to that? Scored against Bournemouth and never gave up the fight, was a constant thorn in the side of his old club.

If there is one thing I don’t question Benitez’ judgement on, it’s defenders.

Well my first post about him stated that other than his equaliser v Bournemouth, he’s been in pretty poor form. If you think he’s in good form then what can I do lol.

He may play as a defender but wing backs aren’t exactly all out defenders. Ritchie himself has said he likes the position as he gets more opportunity to get higher up and put balls in.

For what it’s worth, yedlin has created more from open play this season.

    Geordietom
There seems to be small to moderate sized Newcastle groups in the larger cities in the US. I don’t know specifically of any groups in Michigan as I’m way out west in California.

There are a couple Facebook toon support groups. Perhaps your cousin could post an inquiry to one of those groups, one of which caters to US based fans.

    Almiron doesn’t need a midfield
Hollywood passer, a long ball from
a defender like Schar can be much
    more effective.
Ki’s tidy 10/15 yard passes from midfield
will suffice with Miggy’s electric acceleration

    Geordietom,

I went to Michigan for a look around two weeks ago, best I could find there is a toon army gathering for the games – but it’s in downtown Detroit

Ancient- those stats are very surprising tbh. I can’t wrap my head round it as every game I see Ritchie try a cross and it’s wayward 80% of the time. Same with the rest of our players come to think about it. Very frustrating to watch. For long passes I don’t feny that we have some great long passers of the ball but for some strange reason they can’t cross it properly from the byline.

We should put all our wide players through crossing drills everyday, and if we already do, then it’s very worrisome.

I can see the reasoning behind ki over shelvey today. Palace are likely to sit back and counter with pace, leaving little space in behind. Still, would have preferred shelvey if I’m honest.

I would expect Yedlin to be better going forward, but checked the stats out of interest. (I know stats aren’t overarching proof).

    Yedlin:
    Assists 2
    Cross accuracy 22%
    Through balls 1
    Accurate long balls 26
    Big chances created 1

    Ritchie
    Assists 4
    Cross accuracy 24%
    Through balls 4
    Accurate long balls 47
    Big chances created 5

    Check out these stats
    https://mobile.twitter.com/shawwal_96/status/1114047890031300610/photo/1

Chances created from open play this season per 90 min
    Almiron 2.24
    Shelvey 1.76
    Perez 1.52
    Hayden 1.19
    Atsu 1.11
    Rondon 1.00
    Yedlin 0.98

From sky sports but I don’t know where exactly but link is to an image.

    Blocked shots:
    Ritchie 9, Yedlin 2.
    Recoveries:
    Ritchie 137, Yedlin 108.
    Successful 50s/50s:
    Ritchie 11, Yedlin 8.
    Tackle success:
    Ritchie 65%, Yedlin 59%

The stats seem to suggest Ritchie is both better going forward and backyard than Yedlin. Obviously Ritchie isn’t better at everything, but Ritchie is a far more effective player than he is given credit for.

My point wasn’t that Ritchie was a bad player. Just out of form going from past few matches. Yedlin too is out of form in my opinion, not playing as well as he can. That’s why we’ve seen manquillo occasionally start too.

ronaldo, yes, it would be fair to say that set piece duties would help to boost Ritchies stats in regards to assists etc.

Ahead of the game, Roy Hodgson has been stood looking at the plaque in the #nufc media room which shows the record goal-scorers & appearances for the club. Muttered a few times: “Some great players there, like Hughie Gallacher. & I remember Bill McCracken, too”

RE:ritchie funny how people need stats to see the obvious
Ritchie barely makes a successful forward pass per game. he always goes sideways or backwards
He crosses go to no one in particular
He is incapable of beating defenders one on one
Were it not for the fact he is our designated dead ball taker, his offensive contribution per game would be ZILCH
You don’t need stats to see these limitations
