Rafa Responds To Antonio Barreca

Rafa Benitez was asked yesterday about left-back Antonio Barreca, who has made only one short sub appearance for the team since he arrived in late January on loan from Monaco.

Barreca has been unlucky because Paul Dummett is fit again after being out more than two months with a hamstring problem.

And Paul has come back into the starting line-up, and Matt Ritchie is now starring in the left wing-back position and linking up well with Miguel Almiron.

Barreca sent out an Instagram earlier this week reminding people (like Rafa) that he was still here and available to play.

Rafa Benitez has talked about Antonio Barreca and his now deleted Instagram message:

“I think he can improve in terms of linking with the others.”

“Sometimes now he wants to impress and he’s giving the ball away in situations where maybe he could manage a little bit better.”

“But still he is giving us his energy, his desire, and that’s something I think he will keep for a while.”

It seems like the Italian is trying too hard to impress.

It was obviously a huge opportunity for the 24-year-old to come to Newcastle on loan, but we cannot see him staying past his loan deal.

What do you think?

Yet another player coming from Italy that has completely failed to adapt to the UK. We should stay well clear of that Duvan Zupata for 40 million. I’d take Rondon at 60m over someone from the Italian league at 40m any day.

Mike, for fear of being called a heretic, is that not a duff signing, if he can’t make it onto the pitch for nufc?

Eliminating players automatically because they come from another league is lazy. You get good and not-so-good players from every league.

Zola is one of the best to play in the Premier League and Chelsea had a number of good Italian players, for example, but this guy hasn’t got game time as yet. It doesn’t mean that the next potential success should be discarded.

Yeah Munster, I guess I wasn’t that clear. What I mean is I think we need to move on players from the first team squad to create space for new signings to keep Rafa happy. Barreca, Kenedy, Joselu, Diame the more obvious ones for example. Say 3 in 3 out etc.

If we can move on some “deadwood” like Colback, Lazaar, Aarons, Saivet, maybe Murphy and Gayle too, then that can only help. We at least need to make sure they are all fixed up out on loan.

3 or 4 current first team squad players out, 3 or 4 upgrades in to replace them, either permanent or loans, plus Rondon, and the deadwood sorted out one way or another, would seem a realistic target for the next window.

Munster, maybe not a duff signing, he just came to the club when we were playing 4231, this never looked like changing, Rafa changes it to 523 and our cover for left back is maybe not needed so much, we are playing better football, getting better results and are now in all probability safe due to the main player Rafa wanted coming in, although Almiron hasn’t scored yet, he’s still created loads of opportunities since he came and creates space and his movement is pulling defenders all over the place with his guille and pace.
Barreca can probably consider himself unlucky that Ritchie (another Rafa favorite) has slotted well into the left back position and is always a willing worker…….is Barrecca a duff signing …..time will tell but cover for left back on loan increases competition for places which seems to have benefited the club ,I don’t think he’ll be still here in August though

Munster would like him to be classed as a duff signing so he can get the knife into Rafa a little, we all see what you’re doing Munster.
Just because JFA is having a sabbatical (at least I hope that’s all it is as i regard him as a valued poster) doesn’t mean you’re going to be given free reign to have your little digs in, perhaps you don’t even know that you do it?

Paully, it was a question not a statement. Its not a dig, you’re just being hyper sensitive. The blog is better without Jail who is too argumentative and bullies people. Sadly for him he can’t bully me. If you can’t engage in a debate like other posters above, that’s your problem.
