It Was A Bad Day All Round For Newcastle Yesterday

It was a bad day all around for Newcastle yesterday.

Not only did we lose a massive game at home to Crystal Palace but it looks like stalwart Florian Lejeune has picked up another serious knee injury and he could be out for some time – months.

Rafa was disappointed in the goal we conceded – a penalty given away after 81 minutes when DeAndre Yedlin fouled Wilfried Zaha – the last person you want to get near to in the penalty area.

Rafa had talked about Zaha’s danger in the box yet we still made the mistake that finally was the difference between the two sides and Palace gained 4 points on us.

If we had won yesterday, we would have been 2 points ahead of them and maybe even safe in the league for this season.

DeAndre Yedlin touches Wilfried Zaha in the penalty box

He was asked after the game in his press conference whether it was disappointing to concede such a goal:

“Yes, because we knew how dangerous Zaha is and we were watching the clips about situations and especially this one – against Wolves, it was another penalty.”

“We had four defenders around, so we made a mistake.”

” I cannot be disappointed with one mistake, I am disappointed with too many things that we didn’t do well, especially after conceding the goal.”

“During the game, we were attacking and we could have been more clinical or made better decisions in the final third, but it is something that we have seen during the whole season.”

“But when we conceded the goal, I think we had to manage a little bit better.” “We were playing in a rush and giving the ball away and making the wrong decisions.”

“I don’t say that even doing the right things, we could have scored a goal and got a point, but at least you have to try to do the right things and not play under pressure.”

We’ll have to try to move on from what was a huge disappointment yesterday.

Let’s hope the lads can get back to their winning ways at Leicester City on Friday night.

That’s what we need.

Bad result, not a particularly bad performance.
We’ll miss Lejeune for the rest of the season just as we are missing Longstaff.
I do think Manquillo has to start in place of Yedlin v Leicester. Much as I like Yedlin’s speed and attacking ability, his defending is inferior to Manquillo’s and by now that’s an open secret to every team we come up against.

I put ki as man of the match.

Also agree, we didn’t play poorly. Didn’t finish opportunities and got punished for it. It happens.

Yedlin’s mistake was just plain stupid. Rafa I’m sure made everyone on the team aware of Zaha’s shenanigans in baiting players to foul him in the box. It is just one of those things everyone knows. It is like one of those horror, slasher films where on a dark rainy night a character hears a noise in the house. And everyone in the audience is whispering to themselves, “don’t go down into the basement, for the love of God don’t go down into the basement!”. But the fool takes the bait and yep, they go down the steps into the basement! That was Yedlin! Slashed! The Fool!

Did anyone see the fa cup yesterday? VAR incident with walker.

Just shows how var won’t solve everything as it’s still down to human error and bias.

I don’t think there’s any debate to be had, clear red all day every day.

The fact the Brighton player didn’t go down shouldn’t even be brought in to question.
