Jonjo Shelvey Has Tense Meeting With Rafa – Player Likely To Leave Newcastle

The Sun is reporting today that central midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has held emergency talks with Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez about his situation at the club.

Jonjo has not started a game for the club since last November and there were rumors in January that West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini wanted him for a fee of £20M.

It’s strange because Shelvey was a key man for us last season but with the emergence of local North Shields lad, Sean Longstaff in central midfield can allow Rafa to cash in on the England International this summer.

Jonjo went to see Rafa on Friday morning before the game at Leicester City where Newcastle won 1-0 and it was said to be a tense and frank meeting between the two of them.

Jonjo Shelvey and Rafa Benitez – tense but frank meeting

And the manager is reported to have told Shelvey he’s not in the side because he’s not fit enough – and certainly not match fit.

But you can’t get match-fit unless you play some matches and get sub appearances to get back into games.

Jonjo was an unused sub in the terrific win at the King Power Stadium – our last game before we take on Southampton on Saturday at home.

It seems it’s almost certain now that Shelvey will leave Newcastle this summer but the 27-year-old will be disappointed because he really likes it at the club.

Jonjo joined us in January 2016 for £12M from Swansea and since then he’s played 109 games for us with 7 goals and 19 assists – and was a key player in getting us promoted two years ago.

Comments welcome.

What’s new, pussycat? Not jibs jokes that’s fer sure. Still it’s good to get them out of that box under the stairs and blow the dust off a few after all, you never know there could be some under-twenties who’ve never heard them before. Slim chance but worth it. 😐

There are a few blog regulars who’ve decided to give the place a swerve lately. Belfast has obviously lost his joke book down the allotment. Jesper lost his sense of humour at the hospital when his last child was delivered and evidently gave up looking for it a while ago. Welshie never had a sense of humour but he told his “jokes” anyway until he found out they were as pointless as a Swansea fan haunting a Toon blog. Those we’ve loved and lost, eh?

Sorry but he has a bad attitude and he can be trouble on the pitch. I have no doubt in my mind he stepped out of line for Rafa to do this. Along with the fact when he got his few games to play he was terrible.

He needs to go. And no matter how big a star they are I’m now of the opinion if they cause trouble or upset the balance of the dressing room they need to go. Bye JJ, you’re hearts in the right place but you got a nasty side I never liked.

The game is amazingly open with Man U. missing a couple of chances in the first three minutes.

I dont know why but Shelvey doesn’t seem to like getting foward, I can barely remember him scoring.

When he sits back I get the feeling he’s hiding, whenever he doesnt play we seem more fluid. It was the same last season, with the emergence of Longstaff I think his numbers up.

He’ll take the huff instead of getting his head down and working hard, I mentioned last year he didn’t seem interested it’s the same again.

You cant expect to keep your place unless you graft like crazy and put the shifts in, I dare say if there was a poll Longstaff would get 75% of the votes to play.

I think Shelvey’s away at the end of the season. Don’t think Raffa has ever really trusted him. I like him. JIB me fighting nooooo. Just sharpening the claws though.

Rafa had a lot of time for shelvey. Shelvey seeking help after loosing his rag impressed Rafa.

But shelvey coming on as sub then sarcastically applauding the ref and getting booked showed Rafa he’s a liability Rafa couldn’t afford to take.
