Matt Ritchie Told He Can Leave Newcastle

Matt Ritchie wants a new contract at Newcastle but he will not get one because of his age.

That’s the report in the Sun today and it seems Mike Ashley’s rather severe stance on older players will exist at Newcastle whether Rafa stays or goes in the summer.

Matt has been one of our best players for the last three years and he is the heart and soul of the club and the team – but that seemingly means nothing in Mike Ashley’s purely financial world.

Rafa Benitez met with the winger last week on talks of his future – Matt’s contract runs out in two years.

Rafa Benitez with Matt Ritchie

He asked about an extension to his contract when he would then be close to 32, and he was told by the manager he would not be offered a new deal.

Ritchie was told if he wanted to leave Newcastle in the summer he could start looking for a new club.

So that explains why Rafa is looking for a new left wing back – Ritchie will probably leave the club this summer.

The Sun is reporting the news came as a huge shock to Ritchie himself, who has been one of our best players this season.

Why we couldn’t give Matt a two-year extension we don’t know.

Anybody coming in is always a risk because they haven’t proved themselves in the team.

That’s something Matt Ritchie does every single season.

Matt could see out the two years remaining on his contract and become a free agent in two years time – but we think he will want to secure a new bumper deal elsewhere this summer.

Newcastle will want big money for the talented winger.

What do you think?

I doubt he’s been told he can leave when our safety still isn’t secured.

Be sorry to see him leave.
Bet he’s a big influence in the dressing room.

    Barney Ronay on Phil Jones:

“Jones in particular has been oddly persistent, an heirloom handed down from manager to manager like a chipped mahogany sideboard nobody can ever quite get rid of. He can look imposing, assured, powerful, out of control, baffled, euphoric, gripped with panic – often all at the same time.”

    Steven Taylor?

t this rate we’ll have Shelvey , Ritchie, Gayle, Hayden, Rondon, Perez, Diame leaving as well as all the players on loan – we’re going to be pretty threadbare especially if ‘bigger’ clubs come in for Scharr / Lascelles etc

Mindshaft. Perhaps this is Ashley’s way of dodging the improvements to the academy, by making our squad so threadbare that all of the kids are turning out for the first team?

Bet De Jong was happy it didn’t work out at toon – he’d be struggling with relegation battles instead of champions League semi final !

I don’t think this is from Ashley at all
Rafa can be ruthless when the squad
    needs upgrading.
When asked about it at LPool
Benitez shrugged his shoulders and said
they are big earners they have to deal with it
    Ritchie’s on £2,340,000 p.a.

In terms of work rate, endeavour and dedication to the cause, we couldn’t have asked any more of Matt Ritchie. However if we do intend to try and compete higher up the table then we need an upgrade to someone with more technical ability.

It seems harsh but as players get older they do seem more prone to injuries and you can be stuck with a player on high wages who spends a lot of time on the physio couch. However I would have thought maybe a compromise of a 1 year extension could have been agreed – maybe?

Mindshaft – yep rafa is going to need to start again and build on what is left. Its pivotal ge stays but i dont see ashley making it happen, just a lot of hot air with no substance to it. He will let rafa go, bring in a yes man and give him a small budget to perform miracles which again wont happen. We will go down with a wimper.

We can sit here and dream of what is needes but ashley will not deliver it. False hope is all he deals in. No end product but misery. Sick of him.

This really is surprising considering he is one of the first names on the team sheet, always gives his all and the fact we’re already going to ship a hell of a lot of players out this summer. I would have thought in keeping the core of the team intact.

I also thought Ritchie would be our mainstay LWB for the foreseeable future. Guess I was wrong.

What a p##s take. This lad has given 100% almost every game. Not even a rolling 1 year extension contract ?
This sounds the same as Spiderman was treated. Bloody disgrace !
Matt I hope you go to a club that will deserve your talent. I bet you’re gutted as you one of our best players regardless of your age.

Yes, Ritchie is one of our best players but that’s the problem with our team; not quite top level! There’s not one player that the top teams would want to take, although Longstaff might make it eventually but he’d not there yet.
Look at the players we could’ve had like Lacazette, Aubemerang, Delli Ali, and others. We need to up our game and this is what Rafa is trying to get Ashley to do. If he can persuade him we will be going places!
