After 35 games played the records of Newcastle this season compared to last season are once again identical.
Newcastle have won 11, drawn 8, and lost 16 for 41 points.
And our goal difference is -9 having scored 35 goals and conceded 44 goals – same as last season.
Rafa Benitez – seems happy enough
[table “78” not found /]Last season we lost our 35th game – it was a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to West Brom, who were relegated.
In the final three games last term, we lost to Watford at home and Tottenham away, before we crushed Chelsea 3-0 at home to end up 10th in the league on 44 points.
10th place may be out of reach for us this season, but four points in our final three games will beat last season’s points total of 44.

Comment #3I have to say even with my black and white eyeballs I didn’t think it was a red card at the time and I still don’t. Almiron was in his own half with still a lot to do – I’d have thought it harsh if it had been the other way around to one of our players. However what it did do is fire up our players and the 2 goals soon followed!

He was in his own half yes.
69 yards from goal. You can shoot or lob the keeper from 35 yards.
Or play in Rondon as has been mentioned.
Their player had a choice. He decided to foul. If you sent players off in that situation they simply would not do it. Or they would and take the consequences. An early bath.

I think they will be off.

Me with black n white eyes
Deffo sending off as the guy had no intention of going for the ball moved to his side 4 or 5 yards and seemed to put his shoulder elbow into Almirons face neck plus we had a two on one

Comment #8As well as the ‘goal scoring opportunity’ there is the question of
serious foul play. Hardly a technical offence in attempting a
tackle. Serious intentional foul play is what it was – well worthy
of a red.

Comment #11That’s a good point by Toonincheek.
If there is no thought of playing the ball and you body check someone or you hack them down why is that not serious foul play. A sending off in itself.
Remember Shelvey at start of last season. He was sent off for standing on Dele Ali’s foot while play was stopped. Yet you can body check WWF style and get away with it.
Intentional – that’s the issue as well.

Anyway, latest rumour; Rafa is on PSG’s radar as pressure grows on current boss Thomas Tuchel.
PSG would tick his boxes I guess.

Comment #24A couple of posts back, Ed suggested that because Rafa seems to feel the need to talk to Ashley, a meeting between the two is likely. That’s not necessarily so.
Ashley’s kept well away, publicly at least, and seems to be blanking Rafa, leaving Barnes to run the show via Charnley. However, that could prove problematic in that he could be accused of not trying to accommodate Rafa’s wishes and aspirations for NUFC.
I’d guess that Rafa and Ashley will meet and Ashley will stick to his guns, give no concession to Rafa other than his usual ambiguous statement of intent which’d likely be proven to be lies, again.
When Ashley sees that Rafa means business, Ashley’s options appear to be:
Offer Rafa all he wants to see (Ashley loses face);
Give Rafa some of what he needs (gains some credibility);
Give Rafa nowt, don’t judge (perceived as confirming a lack of ambition);
Do

Comment #25There has to be a complete lack of trust between, Rafa and Mikey’s evil henchmen, the Third Reich’s inner circle. How can you have a normal relationship where every ambition shared has to be written down and approved by a legal team, we’ve got footin no chance

Comment #28If Rafa goes (God forbid), what are the odds that Charmless would choose a foreign manager? Appointing useless dinosaurs such as Hughes or Moyes would be toxic, but if a foreigner were chosen à la Hasenhüttl, wouldn’t supporters be tempted to give him a chance?

Comment #29@24 continued……
Do nowt, don’t meet Rafa (seen as arrogant and ignorant).
As Rafa’s contract’s up on June 30, Ashley could either put Rafa on gardening leave until his contract expires (unlikely) or persuade Rafa to leave as soon,as possible thus leaving the vacant Head Coach role to be occupied quickly.
Given the short summer window plus the planned trip to China, I’d suggest that Rafa could be gone in May and replaced by some other gullible sod who’ll be given a hefty transfer kitty but have players foisted onto him. Our better players will be tempted by offers from other clubs .
All in all, Ashley’s faced with agreeing some terms with Rafa or presiding over what could be seen as the biggest football cock-up of all in his time at NUFC or seeing some sense and backing Rafa.
Which is it to be?

Comment #30We’ve been here before lads. Take a deep breath. Long way to go yet.
Charnley has said he hasn’t ruled out signing Rondon as long as the deal suits both clubs. He’s West Brom’s player and we have to see what they’re saying.
There’s one of the issues being considered, despite his age. That was a sticking point for Rafa so let’s just wait and see. They want him to stay, he wants to stay let’s just wait and see what they sort out when the knacka gets back. He told Charnley to get Rafa signed up and it looks like he’s giving way in the Rondon issue. Bear in mind though it’s what West Brom want. Rafa wants to sell Gayle to Fulham, which might piss off West Brom so it might be out of our hands. He’s their player, not ours.
I’m well aware Ashley can make a mess of anything, but until Rafa says he’s leaving, he’s still only interested in one club – ours.

Everyone in the football fraternity can see what a joke Ashley is never mind what you mentioned.
Ashley is so stubborn to his own detriment that I think this will be one of those cases where both parties lose because The fat slug always has to have the upper hand.
There is one thing tho lads that it will truly show what direction as a club we are to go if He allows Rafa to leave

If Ashley did push Rafa, it would be spun in the same way as if a player wanted to win things the club couldn’t deliver, the club being unable to compete with club’s backed by nation-states!

I’d have thought that Ashley’d prefer an old hand, someone like Warnock or Pullis who’d have little to lose by replacing Rafa. A young foreign manager would be too much of a risk for Ashley who’d want a compliant employee who’s cruising down to retirement, has no fanciful ambitions to win things and experienced enough to give a good show of trying to keep the club in the prem.
And where’d Rafa get his wish to manage a project aiming for European trophies without too much upheaval? Leeds, Wolves or Celtic?
