Whether Rafa Benitez leaves the club or not this summer it looks like Newcastle will be letting a number of their players leave the club in the upcoming transfer window.
First teamers like Isaac Hayden wants to leave Newcastle to be closer to his family down south and Mo Diame may not get the two-year deal he wants and will become a free agent this summer.
With Jonjo Shelvey hardly appearing in the first team this year and being the highest paid player at the club – on around £70K/week – he could well be sold in the summer too.
One of the things Lee Charnley said last week in his financial briefing was that we need to get players off the books who are not participating as part of the first team; and especially if they earning high wages.
And there are lots of fringe players who have no future at Newcastle and are out loan at the moment.
They include Jack Colback, Rolando Aarons, Achraf Lazaar, Jacob Murphy and Henri Saivet.
None of the above seem to have a future under Rafa Benitez, but Dwight Gayle has had a great season on loan in the Championship scoring 23 goals for West Brom.
We’ll have to wait and see if Rafa wants Dwight back at Newcastle in the summer for next season.
Jonjo Shelvey – could be sold this summer
Other players who could leave in the summer include goalkeeper Rob Elliot and striker Joselu who have no future at Newcastle.
In terms of bringing players in if Rafa also lets goalkeeper Freddie Woodman leave he may have to bring in another goalkeeper to compete with Dubravka and Darlow for the first team jersey.
We are not particularly strong at full-back, and Rafa needs to bring in a defensive right-back – and an attacking left-back to complement DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett.
We have Sean Longstaff and Ki Sung-yueng in midfield, and Sean was a revelation for us and seems like a first-team starter at his home town club.
If Rafa lets Diane, Hayden, and Shelvey leave, he’ll have to replace at least two of them.
Our big weakness in the team is at striker, and it has been for the last two seasons; we need two strikers brought in.
Hopefully, one of them will be on-loan Salomon Rondon who’s been excellent since he settled in the team once he was fully fit and injury free.
Mike Ashley hopefully will be willing to spend significant money on a striker in addition to Salomon Rondon.
So that looks like what we need this summer to strengthen the team and the squad.
Depending on who leaves this summer we could need a goalkeeper, two full-backs, two or more central midfielders, and two strikers.
What positions do you think we need to strengthen as priorities this summer?
