Jonjo Shelvey, Christian Atsu And Federico Fernandez Start Today At Brighton

Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the game at the Amex Stadium this afternoon against Brighton & Hove Albion in the late kickoff game.

A win in this game will see us equal our points total of last season, which was 44 points.

From last Saturday both Jamaal Lascelles (slight stomach problem) and Miguel Almiron (out for the season with a slight hamstring injury) are not available for this game.

Rafa has shocked us a little bit with Jonjo Shelvey coming in for Ki in central midfielder to partner the in-form Isaac Hayden.

Jonjo Shelvey – given a rare start at Brighton

It’s Jonjo’s first start since last November.

As expected Fernandez comes in for captain Jamaal Lascelles and Atsu comes in for Almiron.

About 13 in 20 fans think we can win this game this afternoon against the 4th bottom side.

    Waste of space
Once Perez went off Rondon was left isolated fighting s losing battle no one got near him to help him.
Should of brought Muto on to play along side Rondon
Shelvey frustrates me today first half had acres of space in front of him to work carry the ball but wanted to pass it
    Ritchie outstanding today along with
Also thought The back four had a good games

More convinced than ever Longstaff/Hayden is our future 1st choice partnership if Hayden stays.

Longstaff for me is a much better footballer than either Shelvey or Ki, from what we saw in his 10 or so matches. Way better athlete than either, in terms of both mobility and stamina, passing is less ponderous than Shelvey and more positive than Ki. Breaks into the box which they never do. Defensively he is much stronger than either, positioning first class and can tackle.

Not a great performance, but we are safe until Rafa leaves. You can see how the like of Almiron has made a significant difference not being in the side. I’m happy with the back line, middle needs a bit more creative play and a another decent forward would do the trick.

Kenedy did have a great chance to score a thunderbolt, unfortunately the ball ended up on Brighton pier.

Almiron and Perez off and we were toothless.
Should really have seen off a nervous Brighton side today.

Didn’t see much from Rondom, thought this was his worst match, however, didn’t get any support from midfield.a bad day at the office, don’t get me started on Kenedy, can’t understand what’s up with him, a poor game.

I always hoped Atsu was going to have a decent season, I am disappointed with him – not had that many starts but he looked a bit slower than I remembered. One I would look to sell.

Kenedy off the wage bill will help, useless.

Muto – still no idea if he has a future here.

Ritchie was unbelievable first half, tired in the second.

Shelvey, Atsu, Elliot, Clarke, Hayden, Gayle and possibly Murphy should bring in at least £55-60 million, add to that another £50 million from our generous owner….

Gives Rafa around £110 million…. strewth you could buy a chain of bakeries for that !

Biggest signing is Rafa, but I am still 50/50 he will stay.

Obviously easily pleased. Give me your Mark’s out of 10 for Kenedy ,Atsu.
That was the worst 2nd half for a while and Liverpool to score at least 6 against us if that team plays next.
We need at least 6 new players next season.
Rondon 1 out of 10 today but he probably knows we will not sign him next season.

Looks like we are going to need a total new midfield next season as apart from Longstaff . It seems Hayden & Shelvey will be off. Not going to extend Diame’s contract and sorry but Ki not good enough. Need back up at right back as Yedlin just can’t defend. Get LeJeune and Lascelles fully fit and I’d play Schar in midfield.
Shame we will have so many important players missing for the Liverpool game as I think we could have given them a good game at SJP.

So if Atsu and Kenedy were trying to prove there worth we’ll here’s five quid, share it boys.

I never ever thought I would say, Mannie better player than both of them put together.

For me with only two games to go I honestly would give Sorensen a run out to see how he performs at Prem level, nothing to lose by having a look, not a starter but give him say 25 mins in both games.

Kenedy enjoy your exile in Chelsea’s under 23s.

Repost on how I’d like us to go about summer.

These would be my plans if Rafa stays and as expected, we have about £60m – £50m projected profit and £11m carried forward – plus player sales to spend. Note we have also written off all those ‘onerous contract provisions’ now, the likes of Saivet, Lazaar and Aarons should no longer be a factor in the wage bill as they’ve been written off in full.

    Out for certain:

    Elliot/Darlow – £1m/5m

Lazaar – loan again or maybe somebody will take him permanent for £1m
Barrecca – another mysterious loan signing that never got a chance.

    Colback – release
Saivet – again hopefully somebody will finally give us a small fee to take him permanently, if not he’s costing us nothing now his contract has been written off as a loss.

Aarons – £1-3m just too injury prone – think a Champ club would take him for a few million. Perhaps even Sheff Wed as he seems to have done fairly well there and Bruce likes him.

Kenedy – dodged a bullet there, looked great 1st season, but time was his undoing, quickly showed why he will never be a top player, can’t handle pressure and has poor mental resilience which manifests as a bad attitude when things aren’t going his way.

Murphy/Gayle – swap for Rondon please – especially if West Brom fail to get promoted, that deal makes sense for all parties concerned.

    Possible sales:

Yedlin – £15-20m – has some facets to his game that may be attractive for some top clubs. For instance Man Utd will definitely be looking for a RB. I’d be torn if such a bid came in for him.

Shelvey – £20-25m – think he may be heading for the exit door. Our current style doesn’t suit him, had a poor 1st half of the season and has barely featured since. Looked demotivated compared to the player that was chasing an England spot, think he was bitterly disappointed after all those good performances and backing from pundits that he missed out on the WC, along with Gayle’s departure saw him decline in influence. Now Longstaff is the new kid on the block and looks the part.

Hayden – if Hayden still wishes to leave then you now have to be talking £15m+.

Atsu – £5-10m Made a positive impact mid-season without any real end product, came into the team when we were lacking ideas and mixed up our predictable patterns of play and gave us a bit of creative input. Has lost some pace, but Rafa has improved his tactical side of the game for sure and he can play as part of a unit now and puts in the work which isn’t what he was renowned for. Need better if we’re to improve.

Joselu – £3-5m – Good pro, hapless footballer with very rare exception. PL just not his level.

Assuming Hayden has a change of heart and stays, Elliot rather than Darlow is sold that would leave us with about £100m and a squad of:

    Woodman (out on loan)

    Diame (1 year extension)

My first signing would be Sessegnon from Fulham. Think under Rafa and competing against Ritchie, having some of his professionalism and grit rubbing off on to him, would be a great fit to challenger and eventually take over from Ritchie. Probably cost £15-20m with Fulham relegated and 1 year on his contract.

I’d also bring in Carroll on a free. Get him right for fitness he is a proper weapon and the B&W gives him a boost. Still never played better than he did here. Defenders hate him as he is so dominant in the air.

That would leave £80m for a top class starting RWB, a top CM to replace Shelvey, a young exciting player to replace Atsu and another younger prospect ST.

    Very doable.

Done and dusted, over to you Ashley.

(This will bear no resemblance to reality, which usually confounds any application of logic and reason at NUFC.).

I took us for a draw so I’m reasonably happy. But I still think we should have made more of our dominance in the first half when Brighton were simply awful.
Hopefully that result will keep Brighton up and relegate Cardiff. It might even guarantee Hoot’s job for next season.

Given that it was Shelvey’s first start for some time I thought he played OK, I’d like us to keep him for next season, still plenty in the tank to come from him, imo.

This was the obvious result before the game and makes me believe in the SRC , Secret Results Committee.
I’m sure they’ll have decided that we will beat Liverpool 3-2 after they’ve taken the lead and to ensure that City take the title leaving Liverpool to win the Champions League.
Next season we’ll be 7th. It says so on their rota. .
